According to the best data we can find, marriage records, land transfer record, and census records, John Goldman Sr. and his wife "do not know her name"settled in what is now Crawford County,Indiana, in the early 1800's. This country ,was at the time,open territory.They came here as"squatters". They moved in, took possession of a plot of land, built a cabin and just lived there.Most everybody here were "squatters" at that time.After the State of Indiana was carved out of that vast territory, they were allowed to "enter"or buy their chosen tracts of land from the goverment and could also buy other lands that had not been claimed by some oneelse. The land was cheap and well-to-do settlers often became owners of large tracts or whole sections of land lying near or around their first chosen homesteads. This family is reported to have come here from Ohio, but were natives of Pennsylvania or South Carolina. Quite numbers of families came here at about this time who had been neighbors in their previous homes in Ohio Pennslyvania Virginia or North Carolina. They came here and settled in localities near each other and continued to be neighbors.There were plenty of Indians still here at that time, but they were mostly friendly to the white people and got along well together. We have no authentic record of any other family of Goldmans known to be relatives of John Goldman Sr. here at that time,but somewhere in our search of records, we find that a Soloman Goldman and a Moses Goldman were land holders in the western part of Crawford County ,but we cannot trace any connection beween them and our John Goldman family,but their decendents feel sure that they were of the same family. Note: John Goldman settled on a tract of land about one and one-half mile south of what is now known as the Riddle Locality,on a ridge where there are several hundred acres of level to slightly rolling land,then covered with a dense growth of timber. He built his house near a spring as most everyone did. He had six children, some who were born before he came here .He probably married about 1795 as he had a son John Jr. who was born in 1797and a daughter Malinda who was born in 1799. he also had sons Jeremiah,Jackson,Daniel, and George. Here we must go back a few years and bring into this story another family. A Greenbury Wright and Catherine Lodica"Sevedge"Wright came from Ohio at about the time the Goldman familycame nd settled on a tract of land just east of the Goldman's.They had been neighbors in Ohio.They also had children,three of whom were born before they came to Indiana.They had Peter,John, and Elizabeth,Candice,Sallie,Nancy,and Annuel. Peter was a queer boy-spent most of his time with the friendly Indians,so was known as Indian Pete. He died quite young. John was born in 1800 in South Carolina. Elizabeth was born in 1798 according to the census of 1850 when she gave her age as 52 years .We found John's birth certificate on his tombstone so it is presumed that she also was born in South Carolina. We note this here because this Elizabeth Wright became the wife of John Goldman Jr. John Goldman Sr. presumbly ,lost his wife some time previous to 1820 and Greenbury Wright died about 1812 {And Peter Wright died shortly after his father died}leaving his widow Lodica"Dicy"with six children. John Goldman Sr and Lodica Wright were married some years previous to 1820 as the census of 1820 notes that they have twelve children living with them with four under ten years of age. Married and they had two children under ten years as the census record shows.The census records are our best authority for the birthdates and ages of many in our story. John Goldman was left with six children and Lodica Wright was left with six Children.They were married and had six children, so that is eighteen children in the same household. Some of his children and some of her children were evidently married and gone when the1820 census was taken. Of the John Goldman and Lodica Wright Goldman we have records of Andrew born1817, Van Buren born 1819, Lucinda Born 1821, Martin born 1823, Lodica born 1825 Catherine born 1827.Of John Goldman's first family, Jackson married Millie Barton, Jeremia married Martha Jane Roberson, John Jr married Elizabeth wright his stepsister, Malinda married Thomas Martin,Daniel married Margaret McCraney, George married Elizabeth Ann Tucker. Notes for ELSIE BELLE GOLDMAN: Elsie Belle Carr was a true "belle" of inner beauty small in stature but towering in strength, love and selfless acts. For all of her 101 plus years, she has reigned as a symbol of the early 20th century American rural woman who unselfishly shared the bounties of her harvest as well as her life with friends and family. Elsie was born February 22 in 1896 in a small town in Southern Illinois named Wayne City. She was the daughter of a farmer, William Goldman and his wife Sarah. Her father was nicknamed Doc Goldman because he helped people with remedies of medicinal herbs and roots which he collected from the woods. As a young woman, Elsie was urged by her brother Orval to travel to his farm near Triumph, IL to help take care of his pregnant wife. In appreciation of her care the couple named their baby Irma Elsie. It was also Orval who introduced Elsie to his good friend, Harold Carr. The men played checkers together evenings at Prairie Center, IL. Elsie and Harold were united in a double wedding ceremony February 15, 1920 in Wayne City. The couple had a happy life together. Their first child was Gleason. They moved to a farm North of Somonauk where Mavis, Darlene and Wilbur were born. Life on the farm during the Depression years meant a lot of hard work and a lack of modern conveniences. Elsie gardened, and canned fruits and vegetables, and some of the meat from butchering was also preserved in canning jars. She prepared delicious chicken dinners starting with killing the chickens she had raised and many subsequent steps prior to serving. Even on Sundays before leaving for Sunday School and church services, Elsie made butter with a cream separator. Surplus butter was sold to the grocer in town. Relatives frequently showed up for the Sunday meal because they knew there was food at Elsie and Harold s house. The Carrs loved the company and the chance to share with others. During the long hours of harvest time, Elsie would feed 8-12 additional farm workers for the noon meal. In the evening, the kerosene lamps were lit and the farm helpers enjoyed still another meal. The children would help out with farm chores and would ride the huge draft horse out into the field to bring the cows in for milking. The family felt privileged to have a wall crank phone. After many years Elsie finally got an ice box - the type you slide the ice block into! Elsie and Harold later moved to DeKaIb where he worked for General Electric. Health problems caused Harold to have a series of operations. In sickness and in health, the couple celebrated 61 years of marriage before Harolds' death in 1981. Elsie lived in an apartment at the Manor in Sandwich until the age of 98. She loved doing things and travelling with friends and family After that she became a resident of Willow Crest Nursing Pavilion. Relatives and friends visited her there and she was very content and never complained. She enjoyed going out to eat and attending family gatherings. Her sweetness, kindness and love would radiate from her heart in conversation. Her strength and determination continued to her last week of life. A daily vigil of family were constantly at her bedside to show love and receive love from this remarkable woman. On January30, 1998, Elsie Belle Carr passed away just short of her 102nd birthday. This lady will always be a role model of enormous strength, hard work, love and giving to others. She was part of American rural farm history; tiny in height, but a giant in her familys' hearts. He brought it up every time he saw us and asked the same question, "Is that the same one? I remember our family trip in 1989 to Las Vegas when you all came to see us there. We went to that favorite gambling place cut by Lake Meade... The Gold Dig or something like thatl Our Las Vegas and California trips were memorable visits with the Pepples and Wooters.
