Hand written copy by Effie Stokes - Our deceased brother died June 2nd 1904. I have just returned from Sulpher Springs Texas where I went to visit my oldest brother J. W. Stokes whom I found in a dying condition. He only lived 23 hours after I arrived but was concous. He had just passed his 62nd birthday. His death sorrows our large family of 12 children down to two. Which signifies to us that the whole of our family will soon be across the river. Our father died when I was only two and a half years old and left me to my widowed mother and this dear brother who was then 14. I learned to look upon him more as a father than a brother, which feeling never left me. He was a noble Chirstian character having professed his faith and joined the church about 38 years ago. He has ever been a faithful member and also a deacon at the church for many years. It was by his tender care and loving administer that my feet were lead through the tangles and temptations of life till I was prepared to fight the battle alone. He leaves a wife and serveral , 10, children and two brothers to sarrow his death, but while we sarrow we sarrow not as those who have no hope for we are sure that our loss has been his eternal gain. May God help us all to imitate his holy example while we live on this earth. - originally written by R. F. Stokes (most likely taken from a newspaper, R. F. Stokes was living in Texarkana in 1920)
