I am researching the Stokes family of Cheshire, who had been established in the county since the 13th Century when one, Randal de Praers inherited the tiny manor of Stoke-by-Hurdleston near Acton, Cheshire. He thus adopted the surname de Stoke and from him a large Stokes family became established in nearby Malpas. Present research is being undertaken to see if there is a link with my own family of Cheshire Stokeses from Cheadle, Cheshire. Sometime in the early 18th century a widow named Susan Stokes appeared in Cheadle, Cheshire with her son John. This John grew up to become a gardener and from him my entire family tree springs! Other surnames under research are, Hayes, Holland, Harding, Syddall, Ibbotson, Turner and McKeown.
