Notes for W
ILLIAM CRABTREE:
William Crabtree I & Jane E. Halstead
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
William Crabtree I was born March 6, 1682 in Broughton, Yorkshire, England, son of James Crabtree and Elizabeth Webber (or, perhaps, Thomas E. Crabtree and Grace Moore). On May 3, 1703 (age 21) in Broughton, he married Jane E. Halstead (age 15). Jane was born June 6, 1687 in Migby, York County, England, daughter of James E. Halstead and Grace Courtney.
William I and Jane had eight children, all but William II born in Kingsville, Baltimore Co., MD:
1. William Crabtree II (1704-1758) m. Mary Pyke
2. Thomas Crabtree (1707-1774) m Mary Elizabeth Poteet
3. Grace Mary Crabtree (1711-after 1756) m. John William Hayes
4. Ann Crabtree (1714-1756) m. John (William) Wilborn (Wellborn)
5. James Crabtree (1716-1784) m. Catherine Demoss
6. John Crabtree (1718-1802) m. Margaret _______
7. Elizabeth Crabtree (1720-1833) m. James Billingsley
8. Samuel Crabtree m. Ester _______

William was a farmer who probably lived near Leeds in Yorkshire County, England. He received a grant of several hundred acres in Baltimore County, Maryland, no doubt to encourage him to migrate to America and settle on the lands of Lord Baltimore. William and Jane sailed from England in 1705 with their one year old son, William Jr., and settled in a plantation where Stout Bottle Creek flows into Deer Creek in Baltimore County, Maryland (now Harford County). Deer Creek, in turn, flows into the Susquehanna near Port Deposit. The Crabtrees were members of the Anglican church in Old Joppatowne, Maryland.

William increased his land holdings and was even able to purchase the services of an Irish indentured servant named Alexander Anderson. He also had a second servant referred to in his will plus a Negro who may have been indentured or, possibly, a slave. A descendant, Royale Crabtree, visited the site of William's home, however, nothing remained but a small building. Royale also examined the grants held by William from Charles II, King of England. In this neighborhood also lived the Italian family of Poteet, the Pyke and Throckmorton families, and the plantation of the former Count Louis Dumas, called, 'Frenchman's Repose', who had fled from France to Holland. His son, Louis, came to America and was married to Catherine. Their daughter, Catherine, married William's son, James Crabtree.

William I died September 10, 1756 (age 74) in Baltimore County, Maryland, and Jane died there on March 17, 1759 (age 71).
