THE DESCENDANTS OF [WILLEM?] KLINCKENBERG

Generation No. 6

20. SUSANNAH6 DAWSON (ELIZABETH5 FUSSELL, SUSANNAH4 CONEY, BARBARA3 VAN CLINKENBURGH, WILLEM2 KLINCKENBERG, [WILLEM?]1) was born 2 September 1746 in Smyrna, Delaware County, Pennsylvania171, and died 29 November 1834 in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. She married (1) [---?---] COWGILL about 1762. He was born about 1741, and died Unknown. She married (2) JOHN SMEDLEY about 1765, son of THOMAS SMEDLEY and SARAH BAKER. He was born 22 February 1713/14 in (Willistown?), Pennsylvania, and died August 1793.

Notes for S
USANNAH DAWSON:
In regard to Susannah, one researcher reported:

"In the HISTORY OF CHESTER CO., PENNSYLVANIA, etc. (no town, Pa.: Louis H. Everts, 1881) there is a note about Susanna (Dawson) Cowgill, who 'saw her great-great-grandfather, William Clinkenbeard, who was one hundred and eight years old when he died'."[a]

A published history of the Dawson family contains the following account in regard to Susannah's birth:

" 'William Clinkenbeard d. abt 1753, in the 104th year of his age. On the birth of his gt. gt. gr. dau., Susannah Dawson, he said to his dau. Barbara [Van Clinkenburgh] Coney, "Arise daughter, go see thy daughter [Susannah Coney], for thy daughter's daughter [Elizabeth Fussell] has a daughter." This Susannah Dawson, afterwards Susannah Smedley, was b. the 3d of the 9th mo. 1746, and having seen her gt. gt. gr. father, lived to see her gt. gt. gr. children. She d. 29th of 11th mo., 1834, in the 89th year of her age.' ---Extract from a family record in possession of Mrs. Martha M. Lewis, of Huntsville, Indiana."[b]

Child of S
USANNAH DAWSON and JOHN SMEDLEY is:
  i.   JOHN7 SMEDLEY, b. about 1767; d. Unknown; m. REBECCA COPE; b. about 1772; d. Unknown.

21. WILLIAM6 DAWSON (ELIZABETH5 FUSSELL, SUSANNAH4 CONEY, BARBARA3 VAN CLINKENBURGH, WILLEM2 KLINCKENBERG, [WILLEM?]1) was born 15 March 1756 in Smyrna, Delaware Co., Pennsylvania171,172, and died 1806 in Pennsylvania172. He married RUTH CADWALADER 30 March 1799 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania172. She was born 27 September 1776 in Fairfax, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania, and died 1850.

Children of W
ILLIAM DAWSON and RUTH CADWALADER are:
  i.   LYDIA7 DAWSON, b. about 1800, probPennsylvania; d. Unknown; m. MAXON DOOLEY; b. about 1795; d. Unknown.
  ii.   SUSAN DAWSON, b. about 1802, probPennsylvania; d. Unknown; m. EMLA COOPER; b. about 1797; d. Unknown.

22. WILLIAM6 CLINKENBEARD (JOHN5, WILLIAM4, JOHN3, WILLEM2 KLINCKENBERG, [WILLEM?]1) was born about 1780 in (Shepherdstown, Berkeley County, Virginia?)173,174,175,176, and died 1 July 1849177. He married (1) ASPITIA [ASSPITRA] THARP 17 January 1803 in Jefferson County, Tennessee178, daughter of JOHN THARP. She was born about 1783, and died about 1815. He married (2) SALLY HOOKER 17 January 1822 in Scott County, Indiana179. She was born 1791180, and died Unknown.

Notes for W
ILLIAM CLINKENBEARD:
No Clinkenbeard, -inbeard, -ingbeard enumerations were found in the 1790 U.S. Census.
The 1820 U.S. Census listed one William and his family in Scott County, Indiana:
Males: ---William 26 to 44 (b. 1776-1794).
Females: ---2 aged 16 to 25 (b. 1795-1804);
---2 aged 10 to 15 (b. 1805-1810);
---2 aged under 10 (b. 1810-1820).
If this enumeration is of this William, where is his wife?
At the 1830 Census, the family of a William Clinkenbeard were living in Perry County, Tennessee: Males: ---William b. 1770-1780;
---1 b. 1820-1825;
---1 b. 1825-1830;
Females: ---1 b. 1790-1800 (wife?);
---1 b. 1825-1830.
The gender and birth ranges here do not seem to coincide with those of the family of William, son of John the Patriot, and it is probable that the William in this Census was the son of John's brother, William, and his wife Mary Mooney.

Children of W
ILLIAM CLINKENBEARD and ASPITIA THARP are:
  i.   POLLY7 CLINKENBEARD, b. about 1803; d. Unknown.
  ii.   ELIZABETH CLINKENBEARD, b. about 1804; d. Unknown.
  iii.   JANE CLINKENBEARD, b. about 1806; d. Unknown.
  iv.   PHEBE CLINKENBEARD, b. 1807181; d. 27 April 1830181.
  v.   (DAU) CLINKENBEARD, b. about 1809; d. Unknown.
  vi.   (DAU) CLINKENBEARD, b. about 1811; d. Unknown.

Children of WILLIAM CLINKENBEARD and SALLY HOOKER are:
  vii.   (SON)7 CLINKENBEARD, b. about 1823; d. Unknown.
  viii.   (SON) CLINKENBEARD, b. about 1826, (probably) Perry County, Tennessee; d. Unknown.
  ix.   (DAU) CLINKENBEARD, b. about 1828, Prob Perry Co., Tennessee; d. Unknown.

23. EDWARD6 CLINKENBEARD (JOHN5, WILLIAM4, JOHN3, WILLEM2 KLINCKENBERG, [WILLEM?]1) was born 1784 in Greene County, North Carolina (now Sevier County, Tennessee)182,183, and died 6 January 1865 in Gentry County, Missouri184. He married (1) SUSAN RONEMUS 1806 in (Kentucky?), daughter of LEWIS RONEMUS. She was born about 1785 in (Pennsylvania?), and died about 1821 in Indiana. He married (2) ELIZABETH [----?----] (MRS) GIDDENS 22 March 1822 in Jennings County, Indiana184. She was born 1796 in North Carolina, and died 16 May 1882 in Stewartsville, DeKalb County, Missouri.

Notes for E
DWARD CLINKENBEARD:
War of 1812 Soldier.
Edward was born on his father's plantation on the French Broad River in Greene County, North Carolina (now Sevier County, Tennessee). EvaLena Frey, the fourth great granddaughter of Edward's brother, Robert, gives the unqualified year of 1784 as the date of Edward's birth, but cites her source only as "Loraine McLain" who "didn't say where she received her information."[a] In the Federal Censuses, Edward's birth year is given as follows: 1820, between 1775 and 1794;[b] 1830, between 1780 and 1790;[c] 1840, between 1780 and 1790;[d] in 1850, the year of 1787;[e] and in 1860, the year 1784.[f] Given the prevalence of errors in Census schedule birth dates, and the year 1806 for Edward's first marriage, 1784 would appear to be the more likely year of birth.
The 1820 U.S. Census enumerated Edward (and also his brothers John and William, and his half-brother Joel) living in Scott County, Indiana.[g] Living with Edward were three males under ten, one aged 10 to 16, one aged 26 to 45, together with one female aged 26 to 45 and one under ten. The 1830 Census[c] found Edward still living in Scott County with two sons under five, and four daughters aged 15 or under. By the 1840 Census,[d] Edward was living in Graham Township, Jefferson County, Indiana, with three sons aged 5 to 10, one aged 10 to 15, and four daughters, one aged under 5, one 10 to 15, and two aged 15 to 20. One female (presumably his second wife, Elizabeth [Mrs] Giddens), was aged 40 to 50.
Phebe (b. 1818) and Rockylvania Clinkenbeard (b. 1820) were not listed as Edward and Susan
Ronemus's children in the Jefferson County, West Virginia, Court records of April 1833 and September 1834. Also, their birthdates were prior to Edward's marriage to Elizabeth in 1822. It is assumed, therefore, that they were the children of the widow Mrs Giddens by her first husband.
The Census of 1850 found Edward and Elizabeth living with Martha, Edward, James, Wesley, and Elizabeth in Warren County, Illinois,[e] while the 1860 Census,[f] the last before Edward's death, located the family in Township No. 61, Gentryville Post Office, Gentry County, Missouri. At that time, living with Edward and Elizabeth were Martha, Harvey, and Isabel.
In 1900, the Census Schedule shows Edward's son Isaac R. to be living with his son John W.
Clinkenbeard in Grant Township, Jackson County, Kansas.[h] Isaac's mother (Susan Ronemus) is shown as having been born in Pennsylvania (which may not be correct, since Edward's birthplace is incorrectly shown as Massachusetts---a result of faulty memory or knowledge on the part of the data-giver).
Scott County, Indiana, was organised on 12 January 1820, effective 1 February 1820. The new County had approximately 1,500 inhabitants in 1820, and, as mentioned above, included amongst its early settlers Edward Clinkenbeard and his brother John Clinkenbeard.[i] After the creation of Scott County in 1820, County Commissioners were elected and at their first meeting, the March Term of 1820, they divided the County into three civil townships---Lexington, Vienna, and Jennings. "The first justices of the peace were elected on April 3, 1820 . . and then [were] commissioned by the Governor [of Indiana---His Excellency, Jonathan Jennings (1784-1834)] on April 21st: . . [commissioned for] Jennings Township, Benjamin Gilham and Edward Clinkinbeard."[i]

Notes for E
LIZABETH [----?----] (MRS) GIDDENS:
Phebe Clinkenbeard (b. 1818) and Rockylvania Clinkenbeard (b. 1820) were not listed as Edward and Susan Ronemus's children in the Jefferson County, West Virginia, Court records of April 1833 and September 1834. Further, their birthdates were prior to Elizabeth's marriage to Edward in 1822. It seems clear, therefore, that they were the children of the widowed Mrs Giddens by her first husband.

Children of E
DWARD CLINKENBEARD and SUSAN RONEMUS are:
49. i.   MARY L. "POLLY"7 CLINKENBEARD, b. 1808, Kentucky or Tennessee; d. Bef. 1850, Scott County, Indiana.
50. ii.   EDWARD CLINKENBEARD, JR, b. 14 June 1809, Sevier County, Tennessee, on his grandfather's plantation on the French Broad River; d. 27 December 1858, Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky.
  iii.   JOHN R. CLINKENBEARD, b. 1810, Kentucky(?), perhaps in Gallatin County where he later lived185; d. 1833185; m. ELIZABETH A. [----?----]; b. about 1815; d. Unknown.
  Notes for JOHN R. CLINKENBEARD:
      A court record identifies "John R. Clinkenbeard and Elizabeth A. his wife of Gallatin County, Kentucky [& others] . . being children and heirs at law of Edward & Susan Clinkenbeard and Grand Children and in right of their Mother, heirs of Lewis Ronemus Deceased, late of Jefferson County [W.Va.] . . sell, release, & confirm, unto Edward Lucas Senior . . that certain tract or parcel of land, containing thirty-nine acres, more or less, lying and being in the County of Jefferson & State of Virginia . ." 51. iv.   WILLIAM C. CLINKENBEARD, b. 1812, (or lived in) Bourbon County, Kentucky; d. 1856, Clinton, Amador County, California.
  v.   LEWIS TANNER CLINKENBEARD, b. about 1815, (Bourbon County, Kentucky?); d. Unknown; m. LYDIA E. LOWRY, 27 January 1834, Bedford County, Virginia186,187; b. 1805, Virginia188; d. Unknown.
  Notes for LEWIS TANNER CLINKENBEARD:
      Lewis purchased on 1 October 1834 at Jeffersonville, Scott County, Indiana, forty acres of land. [Bureau of Land and Mines Web site.]

  Notes for LYDIA E. LOWRY:
      The 1850 Federal Census schedule shows Lydia Clinkinbeard living in Gentryville, Gentry County, Missouri, in the household of Edwin Gideons. Also shown living with Lydia in Edwin's home were John Clinkinbeard, born in 1844 in Virginia, and John L. Clinkinbeard, born in 1835 in Kentucky. One of them was undoubtedly Lydia's son. [1850 Fed. Census (Missouri), Nat'l Archives Pub. No. M432, Roll 399, p. 201.]
      Could Edwin's surname be "Giddens"? ---perhaps the son of Elizabeth (Mrs) Giddens by her first marriage? Elizabeth was born in 1796 in North Carolina, and married Edward Clinkenbeard in 1822. Edwin was born in 1814 in North Carolina, so the "fit" is perfect. If so, Edwin would be the step-brother of Lydia's husband, Lewis, and her living with a son in Edwin's home would not be unlikely.)

  vi.   JACOB CLINKENBEARD, b. about 1818, (Virginia?); d. Unknown; m. NANCY WITT, 25 January 1840, Bedford County, Virginia189,190,191; b. about 1820, (Virginia?); d. Unknown.

Children of EDWARD CLINKENBEARD and ELIZABETH GIDDENS are:
  viii.   PHILLIP7 CLINKENBEARD, b. 1822, (Tennessee?)192; d. Unknown; m. MARIET CLARK, 30 July 1854, Warren County, Illinois193; b. about 1827; d. Unknown.
  Notes for PHILLIP CLINKENBEARD:
[Note: Phillip may instead be a son of William Clinkenbeard and Sarah Rebecca Shaw.]
Civil War Soldier.
Phillip was listed as a Union Soldier in the Civil War in the "Adjutant General's Report on Kentucky's Union Troops."
