THE DESCENDANTS OF [WILLEM?] KLINCKENBERG

27. MERCY "MASSIE"6 CLINKENBEARD (JOHN5, WILLIAM4, JOHN3, WILLEM2 KLINCKENBERG, [WILLEM?]1) was born 8 November 1796 in Sevier County, Tennessee244, and died 3 August 1869 in Fleming County, Kentucky245. She married JONATHAN A. CLINKENBEARD 15 October 1822 in Paris, Bourbon County, Kentucky246,247, son of WILLIAM CLINKENBEARD and MARY MOONEY. He was born 16 July 1785 in Constant Station, Clarke County, Kentucky, and died 3 July 1862 in Fleming County, Kentucky.

Notes for M
ERCY "MASSIE" CLINKENBEARD:
Mercy married her first cousin, Jonathan Clinkenbeard, the son of her father John's brother, William. The Rev'd John McFarley officiated at Mercy and Jonathan's wedding on 15 October 1823 in Paris, Bourbon County, Kentucky.[a]
Mercy Clinkenbeard was interviewed by Draper, the 19th-century historian, on 18 October 1866, when she was aged 69, at the home in Fleming County, Kentucky, of her son Robt: Clinkenbeard. Regarding her father, John Clinkenbeard, Mercy said:
"JOHN CLINKINBEARD, her father, early settled on French Broad River, East Tennessee. The Indians took Gillaspie's Station, where sixty men gathered to go to the Cherokee Nation---one half backed out---the rest went on from the French Broad river, Clinkinbeard among them; went to a town, took over thirty prisoners, & brought them to the Settlements tied on their horses; & on the return of the whites, they built a house on French Broad, in which they kept them till exchanged.
"THE CLINKINBEARDS.---John Clinkinbeard drew a [Revolutionary War] pension; he died in Clark Co. Ky, twenty nine years ago, in Feb. 1837---wd. have been 83 in June [sic] following had he lived till then.
"The Clinkinbeards were from Shepherdstown, Berkley Co. Va. Wm. Clinkinbeard would not apply for a [Revolutionary War] pension (he lived, I think, in Clark Co. Ky); but Isaac Clinkinbeard, who resided in Bourbon County, Ky, perhaps got a pension: He was at the taking of Fort Lee, N.Y."[b]
Mercy was buried in Flemingsburg, Fleming Co., Kentucky, Flemingsburg Cemetery.

Notes for J
ONATHAN A. CLINKENBEARD:
The birthplaces of the children of William's son Jonathan disclose that he and his wife Mercie (they were married in Bourbon County, Kentucky, on 15 October 1823) were living in Owingsville, Bath County, Kentucky, from 1824 through at least May 1831 (later they were living in Fleming County, Ky., according to the 1850 Census).
The Jonathan whom the 1830 Census found living next to John in Bourbon County, Kentucky, has to have been John and Mary (Lucas) Clinkenbeard's son who died in 1836, and not their nephew/son-in-law who appears to have lived continuously in Bath County, Kentucky, through at least May 1831, and then in Fleming County, Kentucky, by 1850. There is no evidence that he ever lived in Bourbon County after he married there in 1823. The fact that the Jonathan who lived next door to John in Bourbon County does not appear in Censuses after 1830 is consistent with John's son Jonathan having died in 1836.
There is some confusion in the research concerning Jonathan's marriage(s). Before his marriage to Mercy "Massie" Clinkenbeard on 15 October 1822, one record has him marrying on 15 March 1822 in Carter County, Tennessee, Mary "Polly" Carter, born in 1790 in Dandridge, Jefferson County, Tennessee. One child, Isaac, was reportedly born to them on 15 Feb 1823. This is obviously in error, Mary and Isaac being the wife and son of John Clinkenbeard Jr, the brother of Mercy "Massie" Clinkenbeard.

Children of M
ERCY CLINKENBEARD and JONATHAN CLINKENBEARD are:
71. i.   ISAAC7 CLINKENBEARD, b. 15 February 1823, Bath County, Kentucky; d. 1909, DeKalb County, Missouri.
  ii.   WILLIAM CLINKENBEARD, b. 30 July 1824, Owingsville, Bath Co., Kentucky248; d. 28 December 1858.
  Notes for WILLIAM CLINKENBEARD:
William died of Typhoid Fever, and was not one of the four siblings who were buried in Flemingsburg Cemetery, Bourbon County, Ky. [Norman Cooper Emerick, A GENEALOGICAL HISTORY OF THE GEORGE COOPER (KIEFER) FAMILY & ALLIED FAMILIES, Chapter ___: "The William Clinkenbeard

  v.   JOHN L. CLINKENBEARD, b. 3 October 1829, Owingsville, Bath Co., Kentucky; d. 12 August 1858.
  Notes for JOHN L. CLINKENBEARD:
One source relates in regard to Jonathan and Mercy's children that: "A child 'S' was born October 3, 1829 and died August 12, 1878."[a] We will assume that this child was this John. John died of Typhoid Fever, and he was not one of the four children buried in the Flemingsburg Cemetery, Fleming County, Kentucky.[a] The IGI lists a John Clinkenbear (sic) marrying an Elizabeth Toleman on 18 August 1852 in Pendleton County, Kentucky.[b] That is likely this John.

She married SAMUEL ELDER 20 March 1813 in Sevier County, Tennessee254. He was born 22 June 1787 in Sevier County, Tennessee254, and died 24 October 1846 in Rochester, Sangamon County, Illinois254.

Notes for P
HEBE CLINKENBEARD:
Cousin Mary Elizabeth (Lindsay) Brosveen, D.A.R., of Albuquerque, New Mexico, writes that "....my father's cousin was Lindsay Hillman of Springfield, Illinois. Lindsay stated that he well remembered his grandmother Phoebe Clinkenbeard Elder....that she was blonde with blue eyes, and that she WAS 1/4 CHEROKEE. [Emphasis added.] Maude [Clinkenbeard Spencer, another cousin/researcher] also told me that there is an Indian Chief in Florida by the name of Clinkenbeard . . ."[a]
The rumour of Clinkenbeard Cherokee blood continues to surface amongst family researchers. Was Elizabeth Edwards, wife of Edward Lucas and Phebe's grandmother, a full-blooded Cherokee Indian? Or has confusion arisen in connexion with the unrelated Cherokee Indian, Henry Clinkenbeard, who assumed the Clinkenbeard surname because of admiration for a Clinkenbeard man?
Phebe and Samuel had twenty children, the last being Hannah R.[b]
On 11 December 1813, Phebe's husband, Samuel Elder (and Phebe, too?), was received by "by letter," and her father John "by experience," into the Dumplin Baptist Church on Dumplin Creek across the French Broad River from John's plantation. Curiously, however, in 1814 John was excommunicated, and Samuel and his wife Phebe (John's daughter) were "dismissed" from membership, for reasons now unknown.[c]
Mary Elizabeth (Lindsay) Brosveen, D.A.R., of Albuquerque, New Mexico, descends from John Clinkenbeard, Revolutionary War Soldier, through his daughter Phebe:[d]

He married IVEA/IVA/IVY/IDA JOSS ALLEN 28 May 1827 in Bourbon County, Kentucky263,264,265, daughter of DAVID ALLEN and ELIZABETH WRIGHT. She was born 30 March 1808 in Kentucky266,267, and died 29 March 1874 in Atchison County, Kansas268.

Notes for I
SAAC CLINKENBEARD:
Three sources relating to Isaac's marriage contain somewhat conflicting information. Two name Isaac's wife as IVEA or IVA, and give the date and place of marriage respectively as "May 1828, Bourbon Co., KY" and "1 May 1828, Jefferson Co., KY."[a] The third source, locating the marriage in Bourbon County, Kentucky, states: "Isaac Clinkenbeard and JOSS Allen, dau. of Bondsman David Allen, 27 April 1828."[b] Yet another source reported that Iva Allen and Joss Allen were one and the same person---the daughter of David Allen, Bondsman, and that the correct date of marriage was 28 May 1827, the minister who married them being G. Gates.[c] This source would appear to be the correct one.
The Federal Censuses from 1830 to 1870 reveal the following:

---1830 Census: Isaac (b. 1800/10) and Iva (b.1800/10) were living in Bourbon County, Kentucky, three years after their marriage. Living with them in the household were two males, one born 1810/15 (too old to be Isaac's and Iva's child), and one born 1750/60 (very probably Iva's father, David Allen); two females, one born 1810/15 (too old to be Isaac's and Iva's), one born 1825/30 (was this Julia Ann, born 20 January 1831, or was this a prior daughter who did not survive?); and one slave.[d]

---1840 Census: Isaac (b.1800/10) was shown TO BE REGISTERED in Marshall Twp., Platte Co., Missouri, in 1842/3; living in the household were two males, one born 1830/35 (David), one born 1835/40 (James L.); and three females, one born 1800/10 (Ivea), one born 1825/30, one born 1830/35 (Julia Ann), and one born 1835/40 (Sarah Jane). No slaves were enumerated.[e]

---1850 Census: The family were living in Gentryville (in? or?) Miller Township, Gentry County, Missouri:[f]
· Isaac Clinkingbeard, 47, Male, Farmer, b. Tennessee
· Iva " 42, Female, b. Kentucky
· Julia Ann " 19, Female, b. Kentucky
· David A. " 15, Male, b. Kentucky
· Sarah J. " 12, Female, b. Kentucky
· James L. " 10, Male, b. Kentucky
· Nancy " 8, Female, b. Missouri
· Isaac " 6, Male, b. Missouri
· Socraties " 5, Male, b. Missouri

---1860 Census: Iva, Widow, and her family were living in Crawford Township, Buchanan County, Missouri:[g]
· Ida Clinkingbeard, 48, Female, Farming, Personal Estate Value $1,018, b. Kentucky
· David " 25, Male, Farming, b. Kentucky
· Sarah " 23, Female, b. Kentucky
· James " 21, Male, b. Missouri
· Nancy " 18, Female, b. Missouri
· Isaac " 17, Male, b. Missouri
· Cratis " 15, Male, b. Missouri

---1870 Census: Ivy and her son James L. were living in the same household in Easton Township, Leavenworth County, Kansas:[h]

The Land Grant Records of Marshall Township, Platte County, Missouri, show the following land to have been granted to Isaac in Marshall Township, Platte County, Missouri: A quarter of Section 18 was granted him on 13 May 1844, and a quarter of Section 17 was granted him on 14 May 1844.[i]
