Notes for G
EORGE W. CLINKENBEARD:
      One published biographical sketch of George states:
      "George Clinkinbeard was a native of Bourbon County, Kentucky, born in 1817. He went to Arkansas with his parents, Jonathan Clinkinbeard and wife, and his father died there, and he and his mother returned to Kentucky. After a short time, they came to Missouri and lived for a while in Buchanan County, then moved to Mercer County, and eventually locating in Fox Creek Township [Harrison Co.], where George Clinkinbeard entered 320 acres of land in 1855. He lived there until 1883 and then moved to Bethany [Harrison Co.], Missouri, where he died in 1888 and is buried in Goshen Cemetery [near Princeton] in Mercer County, Missouri. His wife [Susan] died at Mt. Moriah several years later, and his mother [Sarah], who came here with him, died here and is buried at Nebraska City, Nebraska.
      "In pioneer days, the nearest neighbor of George Clinkinbeard on the north was John Prater, who lived near the present site of Mt. Moriah. His nearest neighbor on the east was H.C. Hamilton, three and one-half miles away, and on the south a man by the name of Picher, who lived three and one-fourth miles from Mr Clinkinbeard, and on the west, Johnson Queen, who lived one and one-half miles distant.
      "Mr Clinkinbeard built a log house on his place in which he lived for a few years and then built a frame house which was blown down. His third residence is now [1921] standing. Besides engaging in farming, Mr Clinkinbeard was also Collector of his Township." George and Susan "were the parents of the following children: Sebert M., deceased; Oscar J., the subject of this sketch; Otwa L., of Genoa, Colorado; Oliver B., who died in Bethany; Spartan R., of Bethany; O.H., deceased; and Lennie, who died in infancy."[a]
      The following is an account of George's civic activities:
      "G.W. Clinkenbeard (Magistrate, County Court) sat on seat one or more times. He belonged to Mercer Lodge No. 35 A.F. and A.M. (Masonic Fraternity). He was the first member initiated on 5 Oct 1852. He was Clerk for School Township Organization in 1847."[b]
      The same book, in the section on "Harrison Co., Missouri," gives the following sketch:
      "George W. Clinkenbeard, b. 24 Oct 1817 in Bourbon Co., Kentucky, son of Jonathan and Sarah (Smart) Clinkenbeard. Jonathan was born in Tennessee and when a lad . . . [see NOTES for JONATHAN CLINKENBEARD].
      "George was reared upon the farm, receiving a good education for those days, and after the death of his father he managed his business and cared for the younger members of his family. In 1838 he married Elizabeth Forman, a native of Kentucky, with whom he moved to Platte Co., Missouri, in 1840 where she died 5 years later. In 1846 he married Susan C. Rhea who was born in White Co., Tennessee, in 1823 and is the mother of seven children:
Sebird M. Otway L. Spartan R. Linny P.B.
Oscar J. Oliver B. Osborn H.
      "Both were members of the Christian Church. In 1847 they went to Mercer Co., Missouri, and in 1855 came to Harrison Co., Missouri, and lived in Fox Creek Township until 1885. Since that time they have made their home in Bethany Township.
      "George is a Democrat in politics and cast his first vote for Henry Clay. He served as a magistrate at a tiime when that official constituted the County Court of Mercer Co., Missouri, filling the position in 1851 and 1852. In 1877 he was Collector of Fox Creek Township. He is a member of the Masonic Fraternity. He began life as a poor boy, but became a successful farmer and the owner of 440 acres, 120 of which he still owns. He traces his ancestors back to Germany [incorrect; it should read 'The Netherlands'] and England on his father's side and Scotland and England on his mother's side."[b]
      The Will of George's grandfather, John Clinkenbeard (1755-1837), leaves $33 each to Jonathan's children. This SUGGESTS that Jonathan had perhaps three LIVING (male?) children in 1837 (including George), and that a rounded amount of about $100 was left to them to be divided equally.[c]
      The 1840 Census shows family as having been registered in Marshall Township, Platte Co., Missouri, in 1842-43 (sic!):[d] George Clinkenbeard, b.1810-1820; Males in addition to George: 1 b. 1810/20; 1 b. 1820/25; Females: 1 b. 1790-1800 [undoubtedly George's mother, Sarah, widow of Jonathan who died in 1836. Sarah still living with George at 1880 Census]; 1 b. 1810/20 [surely George's wife]; 1 b. 1820/25; 1 b. 1825/30; 3 b. 1830/35.
      The 1850 U.S. Census disclosed that the family was living in District 56, Mercer Co., Missouri:[e]
---G.W. Clinkenbeard, b. 1817 in Kentucky;
---S.C., b. 1823 in Tennessee (GEORGE'S wife SUSANNAH);
---S.M., b. 1848 in Missouri;
---O.J., b. 1849 in Missouri.
      (Apparently, George's mother Sarah was not living with the family, and was probably living with one the other children?)
      At the 1880 Census, the family were living in Fox Creek Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, next door to George's son Sebert and family. The schedule shows:[f]
---George W. Clinkenbeard, b. 1818 in Kentucky (father born in Tenn., mother in Kentucky);
---Susan C., wife, b. 1824 in Tennessee (father b. in Virginia, mother in South Carolina);
---Osburn N., son, b. 1859 in Missouri;
---(E)Lesta R., granddaughter, b. 1874/7 in Missouri (parents both born in Mo.);
---Sarah, mother, b. 1799 in Kentucky (both her parents b. in Virginia).
      Another source reads as follows:
"A SHORT HISTORY OF THE SEBIRD SMITH RHEA FAMILY, 1795 TO 1910"
"Sebird Smith Rhea - 1795-1878 - From Tennessee to Missouri"
      "Sebird Rhea, born in Virginia, Febuary 12, 1795, and wife Nancy Cook(e) Rhea, born in South Carolina January 9, 1797, married January 23, 1817, moved from the state of Tennessee to the state of Missouri in 1838, bringing with them their family consisting of the following children: Mariah Perkins and her husband, Reuben Perkins; Susan; Robert P.; Ransom H.; Amanda; Permelia H,; and M.C., leaving the eldest son, Spartan F. who afterwards came through on horseback; ... also with the family came two negro women (one was Aunt 'Tiller') and one negro girl. It may be interesting to know that on this long trip Sebird Rhea rode horse-back, riding on ahead of the company, in a one-horse carry-all with the two youngest children, and the others rode in the wagons pulled by oxen part of the time, while others walked and drove the cattle and loose horses.
      "The first stop was made in the forks of Grand River, a few miles north of where Trenton now is, in Grundy County, (but at that time what is now Grundy County and Mercer County was part of Livingston County) on what was known as the 'Lyda Farm,' leaving a part of the family there to winter, and taking those that were able to make a 'hand,' proceeded north to what is known as 'Goshen Prairie' and bought two claims from Emery Hickman and Jackson Williams (two squatters), and then began to improve what is known as the 'Old Rhea Farm' situated about 8 miles northwest of Princeton and about three miles southwest of Goshen. Aftewards Mr. Rhea went to the land office and entered this land. It was among the first land ever entered in the county, he being the third permanent settler here. In those days and for several years following the mail was brought from Chillicothe, Mo. and the milling done at that place. One man in the county would go to the mill and get the mail for all the rest. The bill of fare consisted of corn bread and hog meat with almost any wild game desired, and lye hominy thrown in for a change, with plenty of milk and butter, and a little 'coffee, if you please', of a Sunday morning. There were all sorts of game, from the cottontail rabbit to the deer.
      "Along about the fall of 1847 or '48 Seabird Rhea bought of Rev. Thompson, living in Grundy county near where the town of Spickard now is, two negro boys. The oldest one whose name was William, always called 'Nigger Bill', was 13 years old when he came to the Rhea farm, and the other, whose name was Simon, was about 11 years old. The two boys and the oldest negro woman (Aunt 'Tiller') that he brought from Tennessee stayed with the Rhea family until the spring of 1865, when Sebird Rhea sold the old farm and moved to Leon, Iowa, taking all of them with him. Then the negro boys went to working for themselves, but in 1872 the old farm was re-purchased by him and the negro woman (Aunt 'Tiller') came back to Missouri and stayed with the family until the death of Mr. and Mrs. Rhea, which occurred February 2nd, 1878 and February 6th, 1879 respectively. Then Aunt 'Tiller' (the negro woman) as she was familiarly called, went to Leon, Iowa, and died March 16, 1894, living to a ripe old age. The youngest of the negro boys (Simon) died in Davies county, Mo. several years ago. The oldest one (William Rhea) died in Leon, Iowa, October 16, 1910.
      "In regard to the children of Sebird and Nancy Rhea: The eldest son Spartan F. married Nancy Mickey early in the '40's and eventually moved to Kansas, where he died several years ago. Mariah married Reuben Perkins in Tennessee, before they came west, and lived and died near Goshen, where they first settled. Susan married GEORGE CLINKENBEARD, and lived and died in Harrison county, Mo. February 29, 1904. Robert P., better known as 'Perry,' married Lucy Prichard and finally moved to Kansas, where he died a few years ago. Ransom H., better known as 'Huston', married Lyda Evertt and lived in Harrison county, Mo., dying March 2nd, 1904. Amanda married Dr. Josiah R. McClelland, March 18, 1853. Both are buried at Leon Iowa cemetery. They had three children, Edgar Bell, Etta May (Mrs. J.P. Hall) and Emma G. (Mrs, Clark).
      "M. Helen married David Thompson, and are buried at Goshen Cem. Another son, Marcus L., died in childhood. M.C., known as Clayton, the youngest that came from Tennessee -- being at that time two years old, married Maranda Melton, who died many years ago, and he is now living with his only daughter in Leon, Iowa."[g]

These documents appoint S.[PARTAN] R. CLINKINBEARD as Guardian of the
person & estate of ELESTA R. CLINKENBEARD of Harrison Co., Missouri, minor
heir of MARTHA J. CLINKENBEARD, dec'd, formerly MARTHA J. PRATER. We do not
know which of SPARTAN's brothers was MARTHA's husband & ELESTA's father.
ELESTA was shown as being "under the age of 14 years" at the time of the
appointment of the Guardian. MARTHA was undoubtedly the daughter of JOHN
PRATER, who lived just to the north of SPARTAN's father, GEO: W. CLINKENBEARD,
in Harrison Co., Missouri. One of the persons signing as surety for the
Guardianship was SPARTAN's brother, O.L. [OTWA] CLINKINBEARD. The appointment
of the Guardian was handled for Harrison Co., Missouri, by a Probate Court
in Kansas, apparently the state of residence of SPARTAN.
