Notes for M
ARY ANN HOLMAN:
A history of Douglas County, Oregon, includes the following account of Mary's family in Oregon:[a]

"My name is Geraldine Clinkinbeard Morin and I shall begin the story by saying that my great-great grandfather, John Holman, father of my great grandmother, came to Oregon from Missouri during the 'famous homebuilders' immigration of 1843. He settled near McMinnville in Yamhill County and is buried there. He was married two times, had fifteen children, my great grandmother, Mary Ann was the fourteenth.
"My great grandfather, James Lyburn Clinkinbeard came to Oregon from Kentucky in early 1800. He married Mary Ann Holman on August 19, 1849 at McMinnville.
"My grandfather, John Jay Clinkinbeard, the oldest of their children, was born in Portland January 9, 1852. By 1854 they had settled on a donation land claim at Wilbur, Or. In fact, the land the old Wilbur Academy occupied was given by my great grandparents for the sum of one dollar in 1857.
"Mary Ann taught French at the school from 1861 to 1869, and taught drawing the school year of 1872 and '73.
"During their years at Wilbur they had eleven more children, raised nine to adulthood. Two died after eating poisoned cookie dough that had been placed in an orchard to kill squirrels.
"All ten of the Clinkinbeard children attended the Wilbur Academy from first grade to the twelfth grade. Several of my aunts taught school here in Douglas County, mostly at the old Cleveland School in the Melrose area.
"James L. and Mary Ann Clinkinbeard are buried in the old Cleveland Cemetery. Mary Ann was killed by a log while on the beach in Coos County at the age of 46. James L. lived to be 88 years old.
"My grandfather John Jay Clinkinbeard worked for a surveying crew in 1870-'71, '72 and '73 surveying in Douglas, Klamath and Grant Counties as a young man.
"While attending the Wilbur Academy my grandfather met Philura Vanderburgh and they were married at Marshfield (now Coos Bay), Oregon on August 29, 1875. They Vanderburgh family crossed the "Plains" from Missouri in 1864 by wagon train when my grandmother was twelve years old.
"After marrying they bought a large dairy farm up Coos River out of Coos Bay, and lived there all their lives, raising six children - my father Karl was the fourth child. John Jay and Philura C. are both buried in the small cemetery up Coos River.
"My mother's parents, George Thomas and Sarah Jane Smith, came to Elkton, Or. from California in the fall of 1881. George Smith was born August 7, 1854 in Steenberg, Indiana - came to California when he was fifteen years old. Sarah Jane Morris was born in Dixon, California, October 26, 1859. They were married the 14th of October 1878.
"They came from California to Oregon by wagon, camping along the trail. Their first child, Irving, had his first birthday during the trip. Sarah, my grandmother, told of the hardhships of the trip, especially in the Mt. Shasta area as they had to travel through snow. After reaching Douglas County they camped for a long time near Canyonville before homesteading in the Hedeen Bluff area near Elkton, Ore. My grandfather had prune orchards and a prune dryer on his property. He also worked as a cattle buyer, traveling in Idaho and Oregon.
"George and Sarah Smith retired in Oakland, Ore. Lived there till my grandfather died on November 20, 1934. Shortly afterward my grandmother moved back to Elkton and lived there till her death at the age of 99. She died the 8th of September, 1958. Both are buried in the Elkton Cemetery.
"My mother, Abigail, is the sixth of nine children born to George and Sarah. She attended schools in the Hedden Bluff district, Elkton and the Normal School at Monmouth, Oregon. She taught in one room schools all around Douglas county; Hedden Bluff, Dodge Canyon district, near Sutherlin, also at Loon Lake.
"One of her sisters lived on Coos River in Coos county and my mother went there to teach at one of the school's up Daniels Creek. It was there she met my father, Karl Clinkinbeard, one of the sons of John J. and Philura Clinkinbeard. Karl and Abbie were married February 5, 1919, at Eugene, Ore. My brother, Karl Jr., was born at Coos Bay November 12, 1921 and I was born October 1, 1923 at my parents' dairy ranch on North Coos River.
"During the depression my father lost the farm so we moved back to the "old home place" where my father was born. My sister, Alpha Jane, was born while we lived there - on Feb. 8, 1932.
"My father decided to try his hand at raising sheep so in 1934 we moved to Douglas county to a large ranch at Turkey Hill just past Oakland. I attended school part of a year in Yoncalla, but the following year went to the Oakland grade school. By then my father decided sheep ranching wasn't for him so we moved back to Coos River to another dairy farm my parents owned. I finished my schooling at the Coos River school where I started first grade. The high school has since consolidated with Marshfield at Coos Bay. I met my husband, Vern A. Morin, at the Coos River high school. We were married on November 25, 1945, and moved here to Roseburg in 1946.
"Vern A. Morin was born July 9, 1920 near Yoncalla on a farm his parents rented for a time. George E. and Ida Morin had seven children - one died when he was ten years old and is bured at Yoncalla, Oregon. They moved to North Coos River not long after Vern was born and bought a farm near Allegany, Ore. After retiring from the logging woods George Morin moved to Roseburg where he operated a small saw filing shop till his death in September 1946.
"We have one son, Dean Stephen, who was born at the old Mercy Hospital April 17, 1950. He is married to Patricia Howard from Klamath Falls and they are presently living at Falls Church, Virginia.
"My father died in 1963 and is buried at Medford, Oregon. My mother is still living in her own home in Medford where my brother and sister live. Geraldine Morin."
