Robert was born in Bedford County, Tennessee.[a] At the 1850 Federal Census, Robert and his family were living in LaClede County, Missouri,[b] and at the 1860 Census, at Finley, Webster County, Missouri.[c] A letter written in 1956 by Mary Evelyn Clinkingbeard Dihel gives a bit of family history, and states that Robert served as a Union soldier during the Civil War, and that his brother John Reed Clinkingbeard was pressed into service as a Confederate soldier. (See letter for full and interesting insight into life at that time.)[d] After the Civil War, Robert left Harlin County, Kentucky, and moved to Marshfield, Missouri.[e]

ONFED. SOLDIER JOHN REED "JACK" CLINKINGBEARD:
The 1840 Federal Census shows John Clinkenbeard (b. 1820-1825) living in Bedford County, Tennessee, with one female (also b. 1820-1825) presumably his first wife. No children are shown.[a] Cousin Mary Clinkingbeard Graves wrote in regard to John's first marriage that: "Daddy told me about that, which was never talked about much. I don't even know her name. There were no children from that brief union."[b] At the 1850 Census, John (b. 1822 in Tennessee) and his second wife, Dianah (b. 1827 in Tennessee), were living in LaClede County, Missouri. No children were present.[c] The 1860 Census found John and his family living in Bristol, Union Township, Webster County, Missouri: John R. Clinkingbeard b. 1822 in Tenn.; Dianah b. 1827 in Tenn.; James M. b. 1852 in Missouri; Mary E. b. 1854 in Missouri; William b. 1855 in Missouri; Dinah b. 1857 in Missouri; and Joseph b. 1859 in Missouri.[d]
The letter of Mary Evelyn (Clinkingbeard) Dihel (daughter of John's son James Madison), dated 25 September 1956, gives a bit of history about the family, and states that during the Civil War, John was pressed into service as a Confederate soldier and his brother Robert Edley Clinkingbeard served as a Union soldier. (For a full and interesting view into life at that time, see the full text of the letter in the narrative for John's granddaughter, Mary Evelyn "Molly" Clinkingbeard.)

IANNAH RIMMER:
According to one source, "John Reed 'Jack' Clinkingbeard married Dianah Rimmer about 1850 in LaClede County, Missouri. Dianah was born 29 May 1827 in Sullivan County, TN, one of 16 children born to John Rimmer and Mary 'Polly' Whitfield. John Rimmer and his family left their home in North Carolina about 1828, and moved to Sullivan Co, TN, where they were listed on the 1830 census. Before 1840 the John Rimmer family moved to Sevier Co, TN, and they were listed on that counties [sic] 1840 census. They joined the PawPaw Hollow Baptist Church in Sevier Co in 1842. They were dismissed from that church by letter in 1845. The widow Polly Rimmer was enumerated in the household of one of her daughters in LaClede Co, MO in 1850. John Reed Clinkingbeard and wife, Diana were enumerated on the 1850 and 1860 LaClede Co, MO census.
"The first Rimmer ancestor we can prove in our line was James Rimmer born circa 1740. We don't know the names of his parents or where he was born for sure. He married a woman named Phoebe, and, alas, we do not know her maiden name.
"Old James Rimmer was in Granville Co, NC in 1778 when he took an oath of allegiance to the US [i.e., the Revolutionary] Government. His oldest son, John Rimmer, was also born that year. James bought his first land in Caswell Co, NC in 1790. In 1791 a portion of Caswell, and a portion of Orange Counties were taken to form Person Co. After that James Rimmer's land was in Person Co.
"James Rimmer had a neighbor, Elizabeth Step, who was a widow. Her maiden name was Lucas, and she was born in Virginia. She married her Step husband there, and later moved to NC. I don't know if her husband died in VA or NC. . ." [Family group records of John Reed Clinkingbeard submitted by Dorothy Rimmer Scheer, Papillion, Neb., to J.E.Stockman, 10 April 1997.]
