THE DESCENDANTS OF [WILLEM?] KLINCKENBERG

66. WILLIAM7 CLINKENBEARD (JOHN6, JOHN5, WILLIAM4, JOHN3, WILLEM2 KLINCKENBERG, [WILLEM?]1) was born 15 February 1819 in either Lexington, Scott County, Indiana, or Bourbon County, Kentucky)464,465,466,467,468,469,470, and died 5 March 1894 in Winchester, Jefferson County, Kansas471,472,473. He married (1) CABRAL [APRIL?] MOORE about 1846 in Clay County, Missouri(?)474. She was born 1827 in Kentucky475,476,477, and died about 1851 in Missouri, probably in Clay County. He married (2) ANN ELIZA ALLEN 5 July 1853 in Buchanan County, Missouri478, daughter of WRIGHT ALLEN and MARY ARNOLD. She was born 29 April 1837 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky479, and died 7 July 1923 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County, California480,481.

Notes for WILLIAM CLINKENBEARD:
[This compiler's great-great-grandfather.]
William Clinkenbeard, who the writer has concluded was the son of John Clinkenbeard Jr and Mary "Polly" Carter, was born on 15 February 1819 either in Bourbon County, Kentucky, or in Lexington, Scott County, Indiana (the evidence conflicts as to his place of birth), during the Presidency of JAMES MONROE. He died on 5 March 1894 in Winchester, Jefferson County, Kansas. Although primary evidence has not yet been found to document William's parentage, the preponderance of circumstantial evidence establishes that William was the son of John Clinkenbeard Jr and Mary "Polly" Carter, a member of the aristocratic Virginia family that traces its descent back to William the Conqueror and the mediæval kings of England and France.
The following biographical sketch of William was written in 1883:

" W. CLINKINBEARD, farmer and stock-raiser, Section 9, P.O. Winchester. One of the 55-ers in Kansas who early identified himself with its farming interest, is the subject of this sketch. He is a native of Kentucky, and was born in Bourbon County. At an early age he removed to Indiana, where he was educated and reared. When twenty-one years old he emigrated to Missouri, living in the counties of Platte, Buchanan, and Clay, until the spring of 1855, when he located in Jefferson County, Kas., where he has since been a resident, settling where he now resides in 1856. Mr. C. has been twice married---his first wife, now dead, was a Miss Moore. By this marriage he has one son---Edmond. His present wife's maiden name was Ann Eliza Allen. They have seven children by this union---Allen, Dora, Garrett, Mary E., Louis, Iona Belle, and Thomas. Mr Garrett Clinkinbeard is a native of Jefferson County, Kas., born May 28, 1860."[a]

William married his first wife, Cabral(sp?) Moore, in about 1846, probably in Clay County, Missouri. She was born in 1823 in Kentucky and died in about 1851, probably in Clay County, Missouri. He married second, on 5 July 1853 in Buchanan County, Missouri, Ann Eliza Allen, the daughter of Wright Allen and Mary Arnold. Ann was born on 29 April 1837 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, and died on 7 July 1923 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County, California.
The above biographical sketch stated that William was ". . . a native of Kentucky, and was born in Bourbon County. At an early age he removed to Indiana, where he was educated and reared."[a] This is supported by the 1850 U.S. Census.[b] However, the later Censuses of 1870 and 1880[c] and William's obituary[d] stated the reverse, that he was born in Indiana and raised in Kentucky. Since William "was educated and reared" in the State to which he was taken "at an early age", his brother Isaac's birth in Kentucky in 1823/4 when William was four or five years old would indicate that it was probably in Kentucky where William was raised. If so, it would have been in Indiana that William was born.
"When twenty-one years old [William] emigrated to Missouri, living in the counties of Platte, Buchanan, and Clay . . ."[a]. The writer believes that he was probably accompanied by his mother and brothers, John and Isaac, who by 1850 were settled in Bloomington, Buchanan County. William and his first wife were living in Fishing River Township, Clay County, Missouri, at the 1850 Census,[b] and it was probably there that Cabral died, likely while giving birth to a second child in 1851.
Following Cabral's death, William removed to Buchanan County, Missouri, where his mother and brothers were living, and where he would have had his mother's assistance in caring for his motherless infant son. It was there that William married Ann Eliza Allen, who had been brought to Buchanan County as a young child by her parents. After the birth in 1854 of their first child, Amanda M.(edora?) "Dora" Clinkenbeard, William and Ann moved from Missouri to Kansas in the spring of 1855 and in 1856 settled permanently on their own farm in Jefferson County. The 1859 State Census, p. 002, enumerates William in Oskaloosa Township, Jefferson County, Kansas.[e]
At the 1880 U.S. Census, William and his family were enumerated in Union Township, Jefferson County, Kansas:[k]

William and Ann's farm was located on Walnut Creek one mile east of Hebron Baptist Church near Winchester, a village in Union Township.[f] The deed records of Jefferson County disclose that on 20 December 1856 William "Klinkenbeard" was granted by the United States Government 160 acres of land in Jefferson County, described as "NW 1/4 9-9-20," for which William paid $200.[g] The deed records reveal that between 8 July 1874 and 17 June 1892, William mortgaged the farm at various times to Thos: D. Lewis, J.W.Farris, Wm: Feberly (or Fevurly), Jared P. Barnes, and to the New England Loan and Trust Company. After William's death in 1894, Ann Eliza also mortgaged the farm---on 4 May 1895 to F.M. Johnson, and on 15 June 1899 to J.H. Johnson.[g]
The 1900 U.S. Census reported that Ann had given birth to ten children, seven still living,[h] all except the first having been born on the Winchester farm. William and Ann Eliza, were members of the Hebron Baptist Church, located one mile west of their farm. According to his obituary, William had "professed faith in Christ" in the mid-1870s.[d] Upon William's death, he was buried in Wise Cemetery in Winchester, Jefferson County, Kansas.[i]
William's obituary appeared in THE WINCHESTER STAR:

"DIED -- William Clinkenbeard was born Feb. 15th 1819, in the state of Indiana and spent his childhood days in Kentucky. He moved to Missouri in 1840; from there to Kansas in 1855 where he spent the remainder of his days. He died at his residence on Walnut Creek, Monday, March 5th '94, at the ripe old age of 75 years. He was twice married, and the father of 12 children. His first wife and her children having proceeded [sic] him to the grave. His second wife with a family of 7 children are left to mourn his loss, but their loss is his eternal gain. Some 20 years ago he professed faith in Christ and died with strong hope of meeting his Savior.
"The funeral services were conducted at the church by Elder Overstreet from Job 14, 14: 'If Man die shall he live again? All the days of my appointed will I wait till my charge comes'; after which he was laid to rest in the Wise cemetery to await the resurrection morn. The family have the sympathy of all in the hour of their bereavement. H.Y.Q "[d]

William died intestate and Ann Eliza was appointed by the Jefferson County Probate Court on 31 March 1894 to be Administratrix of his estate, the "probable value" of which was set at $400, with a bond of $800 being required to be filed with the Court by Ann.[j] An accounting of the estate was not included with the Court documents. Ann Eliza died in 1923, twentynine years after William, at Santa Cruz, California, where she had gone to live with her daughter, Mary, E. (Clinkenbeard) Michael. She was buried next to William in Winchester's Wise Cemetery.

Notes for C
ABRAL [APRIL?] MOORE:
A history of Kansas includes a biographical sketch of William Clinkenbeard and identifies his first wife's surname as Moore.[a] The 1840 Federal Census enumerates a William Clinkinbeard family living in Pike County, Missouri, and consisting of one male born 1810-20, one female born 1810/20, and two females born 1835-40. One person was shown employed in "Navigation of canals, lakes, & rivers," and one employed in "Learned professions & engineers."[b] It does not appear, however, that this was William and Cabral, since the 1850 Census shows Cabral's birth year to have been 1827. The latter Census enumerated the family in Fishing River Township, Clay County, Missouri, as follows: William, Farmer, b. 1821 in Kentucky; Cabral (sp?), b. 1827 in Kentucky; Edmond, b. 1849 in Missouri.[c] The 1880 Census shows Cabral and William's son Edmond to be living in Jackson Township, Buchanan County, Misouri. Cabral's place of birth is shown as Missouri.[d]
Listed in the 1850 Census and living in Marshall Township, Platte County, Missouri, were Eli Moore, Blacksmith & Farmer, aged 60, b. Virginia (1790); Polly Moore, aged 51, b. Pennsylvania (1799); Joseph Moore, Farmer, aged 19, b. Missouri (1831).[e] It is possible that these were Cabral's father, mother, and brother. Land Grant Records disclose that a plot of land in Section 12 of Marshall Township was granted on 9 November 1843 to Eli Moore.[f]

Notes for ANN ELIZA ALLEN:
[This compiler's great-great-grandmother.]
Ann Eliza Allen, the daughter of Wright Allen and Mary Arnold, was born during the Presidency of MARTIN Van BUREN on 29 April 1837 near Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. She died on 7 July 1923 at Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County, California. Ann married on 5 July 1853 in Buchanan County, Missouri, William Clinkenbeard, born 15 February 1819 in Bourbon County, Kentucky, died 5 March 1894 in Winchester, Jefferson County, Kansas, son of John Clinkenbeard Jr and Mary "Polly" Carter. William, eighteen years Ann's senior, had been married to Cabral(?) Moore had who died in about 1851, perhaps in childbirth with her second child that did not survive, leaving one child, Edmond.
Ann lived in Buchanan County until she was married at the age of 16. The marriage was solemnized by The Reverend Thomas Allen, Minister of the Gospel (and probably an uncle or cousin of Ann's; Anne named one of her sons "William Thomas"). After the birth of Ann's first child, Amanda M(edora?), Ann and William moved to a farm in Winchester, Jefferson County, Kansas, where the rest of their children were born---Wright Allen, Charles Garrett, Mary E(lizabeth?), Lewis O., Emma, Iona Belle, William Thomas Jefferson, and a child who apparently died in infancy. Ann's granddaughter, Gertrude May Clinkenbeard, spoke devotedly of Ann for whom she had great love, and said that after her parents' divorce in about 1893 she went to live with her grandparents and that "my grandmother raised me".[a]
Ann's husband died intestate, and she was appointed administratrix of his estate on 31 March 1894 by the Probate Court of Jefferson County, Kansas.[b] The 1900 Census found Ann living in the home of her widowed son, Charles Garrett Clinkenbeard, together with his two daughters and Ann's daughter, Iona Belle Clinkenbeard, and also Ann's grandson Walter Allen Clinkenbeard.[c] In 1914, at the age of 77, Ann left Kansas to live with her daughter, Mary E(lizabeth) "Molly" (Clinkenbeard) Michael, in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County, on the central California coast. There she remained until her death at the age of 86.[d] After her funeral at Hebron Baptist Church, Winchester, at which the Pastor, The Rev'd Mr Everett officiated, Ann was buried in Wise Cemetery, Winchester, Jefferson County, Kansas.[d]
The following article appeared in the WINCHESTER STAR Newspaper on 13 July 1923:
"MRS ELIZA CLINKENBEARD DEAD. The Star received the following telegram Thursday morning, which is self-explanatory:
"Santa Cruz Cal July 11 1923
"Winchester Star
"Winchester, Kansas
"Mrs. Ann Eliza Clinkenbeard died at Santa Cruz Calif. July 7, 1923. Age 86 years 2 months, 8 days.
      's/ Mrs. B. F. Michael
"Mrs. Clinkenbeard has resided in and near Winchester about all her life. Some nine years ago she went to Santa Cruz to make her home with her daughter, Mrs Michael where she had resided since. Whether or not the remains will be brought here for burial is not known. Mrs. Clinkenbeard is survived by five children."[e]
The 20 July 1923 edition of THE WINCHESTER STAR printed the following:
"OBITUARY. Anna [sic] Eliza Allen was born near Louisville Kentucky April 20, 1837. Departed this life at Santa Cruz, Calif., July 7, 1923, 4:30 p.m. aged 86 years 2 months and 8 days. In early childhood she moved with her parents to Buchanan county, MO. She was married to William Clinkenbeard July 5, 1853. Ten children were born to this union. Her husband departed this life 29 years ago. She and her husband were early settlers in this county, settling on a farm one mile east of Hebron church in the east part of this county in 1854, living there over 45 years, later living north of Winchester and later in Winchester. She left for California in 1914 to live with her daughter. Deceased is survived by one sister, Mrs. S.A. Allen, Boston, Mass.; three sons and three daughters, Mrs. Dlora Rice, Los Angeles, Cal.; Mrs. Mollie Michael, Santa Cruz, Cal.; Mrs Belle Hull Sublette, Idaho; W.A.Clinkenbeard Manitou, Okla.; L.O. Clinkenbeard, New Market MO.; W.T.J. Clinkenbeard, St. Joseph, MO. Also 27 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren. She was converted early in life and has been a member of Hebron church over 50 years.
      "CARD OF THANKS
"We wish to thank our many friends and neighbors for their kindness and sympathy shown us in our bereavement, the death of our mother and grandmother, Mrs. A.E. Clinkenbeard; also the pastor of the Hebron Baptist church, Mr. Everett and family, for their kindness shown us, and those who furnished the music, and for the beautiful floral offerings.
      "Sons, Daughter and Grandchildren."[d]
Hebron Church was later destroyed by fire with all the records being lost.[f]

67. HIRAM7 CLINKENBEARD (JOHN6, JOHN5, WILLIAM4, JOHN3, WILLEM2 KLINCKENBERG, [WILLEM?]1) was born 1822 in Kentucky485,486,487, and died Aft. 1870. He married CLARISSA J. MONTGOMERY about 1846 in Cole County, Missouri (or Arkansas?)487. She was born 1823 in Kentucky, and died Unknown.

Notes for H
IRAM CLINKENBEARD:
[Note: The filial relationship of Hiram to John and Mary (Carter) Clinkenbeard is based upon circumstantial evidence only.]
The evidence: Hiram gave his first son the Christian name of "John" (after his father?), and the middle name of "Henry" (after his brother[?] by whom the name "Henry" had made its first appearance in the Clinkenbeard line, and who could well have been named after his grandfather, Henry Carter?).
One source[a] reported that "According to family tradition, [Hiram's sons] John #143 and William #145 were brothers. This would follow the custom of unmarried brothers marrying the widow to support the family. This was very common previous to 1930. Hiram and Clarissa's name not in family bible records. Research provided a match in Cole county MO with some misspelling. Ages of William and John match as does locality and time periods. 99 percent sure that these are the correct parents.
"Recorded in 1850 ARK, Carroll county, Prairie Twp, sheet 46 or 291, line 9, taken 18 Sep 1850:
--Hiram Clinkenbeard, 27, Farmer, born Ky
--Clarissa, 25, Ky
--John, 3, Ark
"Recorded in 1870 MO, Cole County, Jefferson Twp, sheet 199 , line 15 taken 23 June 1870:
--Hiram Klinkenbeard,48, Farm Laborer, born Va
--Clara J., 47, House keeping, Ky

--Jane, 19, Ar
--Stephen, 19, Va
--William, 15, Ar
--Lidia A., 13, Iowa
--Martha, 8, Iowa
--Louisa, 6, Mo"[a]
Like William Clinkenbeard of Winchester, Kansas, Hiram would seem to be a son of John Clinkenbeard (b. 1792) and his wife Mary "Polly" Carter, for he was born in Kentucky, and he would seem to fit nowhere else.
The 1880 U.S. Census disclosed Hiram and Clara still living in Cole, Jefferson County, Missouri:[b]
