Notes for W
ILLIAM A. CLINKENBEARD:
The Perrin HISTORY OF BOURBON COUNTY, KENTUCKY, contains a biographical sketch of WILLIAM, a resident of North Middletown, Bourbon County, Kentucky. It states:
"WILLIAM A. CLINKINBEARD, farmer; P.O. North Middletown; was born June 24, 1820, and is a son of John and Sallie (Strode) Clinkinbeard; his grandfather, William Clinkinbeard, emigrated from Maryland, and was one of the first settlers of Strode's Station, in Clark County. He [WILLIAM] raised two sons
and three daughters. The second son, John Clinkinbeard, was born about the year 1795, and was married in 1819 to Sallie, daughter of John Strode, whose father was the first settler of Strode's Station. By this marriage there were only [sic] seventeen children, and fifteen of them were raised to maturity. The oldest son, William A., who is the subject of our sketch, was married Sept. 2, 1847, to Harriet B., daughter of James W. Rice, spoken elsewhere in this work. Our subject and Harvey W. Rice [WILLIAM's brother-in-law?] were the first importers of Cotswold sheep to this State; they purchased them of Col. Ware, near Winchester, Va., and was the first stock ever shipped over the Baltimore & Ohio railroad. These sheep cost them an average of $75 per head. Mr. Clinkinbeard and wife are members of the Christian Church." [---William Henry Perrin, ed., HISTORY OF BOURBON, SCOTT, HARRISON, & NICHOLAS COUNTIES, KENTUCKY (Chicago: O.L. Baskin & Co., 1882) p. 538; photocopy in possession of J.E. Stockman.]

Notes for J
OHN S. CLINKENBEARD:
At the 1860 U.S. Census, John and his family were living in Watson Postal District, Sangamon Co., Illinois. Living with the family was William Bean (b.1854, aged 6); this is of interest because a Peter Bean was one of the two witnesses to the Will of John's grandfather, William clinikenbeard (b.1761). Also living with them was H.G. Brant (or Bryant), prob a brother to Louise.[a]
One source identifies three children in addition to John W.[b] Another source also identifies three additional children: the infant born to Louise, and Sarah Jane, Caleb, and an infant born to Martha. He does not show Emma as born to Martha.[c] This last source states that John "Came to Buffalo Hart Grove in 1850 and to Illiopolis township [Illinois] in 1867."[c]
The LDS Master Index for 1840-1849 includes the following listing:

"Clinkinbeard, J.S., Washington Co., Oregon, Portland City, 1845"

Presumably, this was a territorial census. It is unknown whether that person was this John Clinkenbeard.
