Notes for V
IOLA EUGENIA CLINKINBEARD:
[The writer's second cousin thrice removed.]
According to the marriage certificates, Viola Clinkinbeard married Winfield Scott Vanderburgh on 29 August 1875 in Coos County, Oregon, in a double-wedding ceremony. The second couple were Viola's brother, John Clinkinbeard and Philura Vanderburgh. Viola and Winfield were the second great-grandparents of David Warren Robison, Concord, Contra Costa County, California. The marriage, which took place at the house of John's father, James Clinkinbeard, was solemnized by The Reverend James Matthews, Minister of the Gospel, and was witnessed by Horace and Hansel Colver.[a]
A Honolulu newspaper article described frightening events through which Viola lived during her life:
"Woman, 90, Unruffled by Wave Buffeting"
"Mrs. Viola Vanderburgh, 90 year old globe trotter, refers to herself playfully as a 'harbinger of catastrophes'. Her latest clinch with calamity was the tidal wave which swept her away from the breakfast table at the Wailupe [Hawaii] home of her daughter, Mrs. Antonio Perry.
" 'I've lived a long life,' she said calmly. 'I hardly expect to die in bed, after the events I've lived through.'
"Mrs. Vanderburgh's calamities started with Indian attacks on the Oregon village in which she lived and the constant fear of scalpings she and her family lived under until law and order was finally established in the northwest.
"Moving to San Francisco to start out anew, Mrs. Vanderburgh arrived just in time for the San Francisco fire and earthquake in 1906. With the advent of the horseless carriage, Mrs. Vanderburgh managed to get into two automobile wrecks and come out unscathed. Deciding to visit her sister six years ago, she arrived in Honolulu as bombs were dropping over Pearl Harbor.
"On her last trip to Hawaii a month ago, Mrs. Vanderburgh decided to fly. 'I'd ridden everything from a stage coach to the new fluid drive automobiles, and I've been aboard all sorts of ships from clippers to the latest luxury liners, so I decided to try the airplane!' she said, with a grin. 'We left on the 13th of the month and of course, we developed engine trouble half way across the Pacific and had to turn back! Then I arrived for the tidal wave. There ought to be a warning out everytime I change my residence!'
"Mrs. Vanderburgh, still active and alert, spends her time at the hospital recuperating from minor bruises sustained during the tidal wave, reading Time magazine and detective stories."[b]
Viola lived to be 100 years of age, almost reaching the age of her forefather, Willem Klinckenberg (1649-1754) of Niew Uijtrecht, Nieuw Netherland, who lived to be 104. Cousin Dave Robison wrote that "Viola's daughter, Eugenia May, married Antonio Perry who, as I understand the story, was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Hawaii before it received statehood."[c] Dave also wrote that "family rumor has it that my Clinkinbeard line is related to John Brown, a second cousin if i'm not mistaken. Viola Clinkinbeard Vanderburgh writes of this in her journal:
"John Brown a Relative."
"In her old age, Grandmother C. [Sarah Smart, wife of Jonathan Clinkenbeard who was the son of John and Mary (Lucas) Clinkenbeard] told me, 'John Brown, whose soul goes marching on', was a relative (a cousin, 2nd) of hers. His father and her grandfather were cousins. She had never told her children. Years later I told W.S. [Viola's husband, Winfield Scott Vanderburgh] and he was very much amused. I later told Aunt Philura. She thought it as amusing as did we. We decided Grandfather objected to their knowing of the disgrace. My mother was as prejudiced as were others, but she refused to let us sing, 'John Brown's body lies a mouldering in the ground, and his soul goes marching on'. A pity to us for it was a very popular song." [d]
Dave stated further that "At any rate, I have transcribed a first hand account by one Joseph Barry who lived in the area, for anyone who finds such things interesting. It's not quite 100% complete but close enough".[d] The Barry account can be accessed at the following Web site: http://flag.blackened.net/daver/1sthand/harpers_ferry.html
