  Notes for WILLIAM CLINKINGBEARD:
Hello to all my cousins!

At last I had a chance to talk to my elderly mother, compare some earlier
notes, and come up with some more information for you all.
The family tree(s) I have seen so far end with William Orie Clinkingbeard in
Ava, Missouri. As I have already told some of you, he later moved to Oregon,
and then on to Washington -- where he eventually died and was buried.
This installment takes it three generations further.

Recently I spoke to my neice, Kimberly Clinkingbeard, and she said that she
and her sisters would be very interested to see all this material -- so I
have sent it and your email addresses to her. Some of you may be hearing
from her.
This is probably about all I have to tell you -- now I turn it over to the
other membes of my branch of the clan!

Take care & God bless!
Fr. Nicholas

DMOND B. CLINKENBEARD:
At the 1850 Federal Census, Edmond was living with parents in Fishing River Township, Clay County, Missouri.[a] Within a year or two, when Edmond was still an infant, his mother, Cabral (Moore) Clinkenbeard, died and Edmond was raised by his stepmother, Ann Eliza (Allen) Clinkenbeard. The 1880 Census found Edmond living in Jackson, Buchanan County, Missouri.[b] In the documents for his father's estate, Edmond's children, but not he, are shown as heirs, indicating Edmond had died before his father's death on 5 March 1894.[c]

Notes for A
MANDA M.(EDORA?) "DORA" CLINKENBEARD:
The writer recalls going with his mother Ethel (Cosgrove) Stockman and grandmother Gertrude (Clinkenbeard) Cosgrove in about 1935, when he was aged about eight, to visit "Aunt Dora", the sister of Gertrude's father. The writer recalls that Dora's home, which according to the 1920 Census, was at number 793 East 43rd Street, Los Angeles, California, was a large white clapboard house with huge date palm trees in the front lawn, facing a square with green lawns and more large date palms. The writer, whose family lived in a typical one-storey California bungalow, was fascinated with Aunt Dora's house, which, with its dormer projecting from the roof, either had a second storey or a spacious attic. The writer dearly wanted to climb the stairs and explore. Aunt Dora, widowed and about 80 at the time, was a large, rather overweight woman with dark hair combed up into a bun on top.

At the 1880 U.S. Census, Dora and John were living in Howard, Elk County, Kansas:[a]

Relation Sex Marr Race Age Born Occ. Parents Born
John RICE Self M M W 27 MO Farmer Fa: --- Mo: ---
Dora RICE Wife F M W 24 MO Keeping House Fa: --- Mo: ---
Arthur RICE Son M S W 4 KS Fa: --- Mo: ---

The 1920 U.S. Census found Dora, a widow, living at 793 East 43rd Street, Los Angeles, with her daughter, Ethel, aged thirty-four, born in Kansas; her son-in-law Joseph (Corgraniota?), a carpenter in a railway shop, aged fifty, born in Iowa; and her grandsons (Ethel and Joseph's children), Herbert J., aged six, and Frances [sic] E., aged three, both born in California. Neither Dora nor Ethel were employed.[b]
At the 1930 U.S. Census, Dora, aged 74 and head of the household, was still living at 793 East 43d Street, Los Angeles. She was again listed as a widow, as now also was her daughter, Ethel, aged 45, born in Kansas, who was listed as a Janitor at a Railway. The latter's two sons were enumerated as "Rice, Erbert", aged 15, born in California, a Cutter at a Clothing company, and "Rice, Ernest", aged 12, not employed, also born in California (presumably Herbert Joseph, and Francis Ernest). Dora was shown as renting her home, with property valued at $1,600.[c]
During the Great Depression, many people were drawn to Communism as an answer to the world's disastrous economic situation. The writer recalls Aunt Dora's son, Arthur Rice and his wife, calling several times upon the writer's parents in Huntington Park, California, trying fervently to persuade them to join the Rice's Communist Party cell. They were, fortunately, unsuccessful.
