THE DESCENDANTS OF [WILLEM?] KLINCKENBERG

158. WRIGHT ALLEN8 CLINKENBEARD (WILLIAM7, JOHN6, JOHN5, WILLIAM4, JOHN3, WILLEM2 KLINCKENBERG, [WILLEM?]1) was born 8 October 1857 in Jefferson County, Kansas703,704,705,706,707,708,709, and died 3 February 1936 in Frederick, Tillman County, Oklahoma710. He married (1) LILLIAN MAY "MADALENA" CONNELLY 1879 in (Easton, Leavenworth County, Kansas?)711,712, daughter of HOWARD CONNELLY and ELIZA ATCHISON. She was born 1859 in Missouri713,714,715, and died 1910 in St Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri716. He married (2) MARY "MOLLY" WILLIAMS717,718 1894719. She was born April 1872 in Kentucky720, and died Bet. 1920 and 1930 in (presumably) Tillman County, Oklahoma721,722.

Notes for WRIGHT ALLEN CLINKENBEARD:
[The writer's great-grandfather.]
Wright Allen Clinkenbeard, the son of William Clinkenbeard and Ann Eliza Allen, was born on 8 October 1857 in Winchester, Jefferson County, Kansas, during the Presidency of JAMES BUCHANAN. Wright died on 3 February 1936 at his farm near Frederick, Tillman County, Oklahoma. Wright married first, in 1879, Lillian May "Madalena" Connelly, born 1859 in Missouri, died 1910 in St Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri, the daughter of Howard Connelly and Eliza Jane Atchison of Easton in nearby Leavenworth County, Kansas. After Wright and Lillian divorced in about 1894, Wright married, apparently in that same year, Mary "Molly" Williams, the widow of Stephen Graham.
Wright, commonly called Allen, was named after his maternal grandfather, Wright Allen (who in turn bore his mother's maiden name as his Christian name). Wright, whom early photographs as a child and as a young man show to have been a handsome lad, grew to adulthood on his parents' farm on Walnut Creek near the village of Winchester in Union Township, Jefferson County, Kansas. By 1875, according to the Kansas Agricultural Census of that year, Wright had set out on his own and appears to have been farming his own (or perhaps rented) land in Jefferson Township, Jefferson County. He was listed as a Farmer not yet married.[a]
After his marriage, at about the age of 22, in approximately 1879, Lillian kept house, and Wright continued farming in Jefferson Township, Jefferson County. The 1880 Federal Census shows Wright and Lillian living in Union Township, Jefferson County, Kansas. Living with them, in addition to their son, one-month-old Ernest C. Clinkenbeard, was Wright's sister, Iona Belle Clinkenbeard.[b] Ernest died before the Kansas Agricultural Census of 1885 when the couple again were shown living in Jefferson Township, Jefferson County, with their two daughters, Gertrude May and Bertha Marie.[c] Wright and Lillian had eight children altogether---Ernest C., Gertrude May, Bertha Marie, Walter Allen, Mary Josephine "Jossie," Kenneth Calvin, Ernest, and Mattie Jane. For unknown reasons, and exceedingly rare for the times, Wright and Lillian's marriage ended in the tragedy of divorce in 1893/4 when Wright was about 35 years of age. Who was at fault, or whether it was by mutual agreement, is not known. Following the divorce, Lillian apparently went to Missouri, and there the couple's last child, Mattie Jane, was born in March 1894.
As a result of the disgrace caused by the tragic breakup of the family, Wright's and Lillian's children, by the 1900 Census, were living with various relatives: Gertrude with her paternal grandparents, William and Ann Eliza; Bertha with her Aunt Mary Clinkenbeard (Mrs Frank Michael); Walter with his Uncle Charles Garrett Clinkenbeard; Mary Josephine with her "Uncle" James Allen Clinkenbeard (actually, her first cousin twice removed); Kenneth with his maternal grandparents, Howard and Eliza Jane (Atchison) Connelly. Although she had been born in Missouri, Mattie, the youngest, went to live with her Uncle William and Aunt Cora Connelly in Easton, Leavenworth County, Kansas---not far from Winchester. It is assumed that Ernest, the only child not accounted for in the 1900 Census, had been kept by his mother, Lillian, and was taken by her to live in Missouri, perhaps in the town of St Joseph in Buchanan County. At the 1910 Census, Josie and Mattie were living in Oklahoma with Wright and his second wife, Mary "Mollie" Williams, whom he had married in 1894.[e] Walter eventually settled on a farm near Wright's in Tillman County, Oklahoma.[e] Otherwise, for the rest of their lives, the children seem to have had little if any contact with either of their parents.
By 1895 Wright and and Mary were living in Oklahoma when their first child Myrtle was born, followed by the births of Alvina ("Vina"), Luella ("Lula"), and Hattie (Viola?). In addition, "Mollie" gave birth to four other children who died, but it is unknown which were the children of Stephen Graham and which were Wright's. In Oklahoma, the 1900 Census found Wright and Mary living in Rock Township, Payne County.[d]
By the 1910 Census, Wright had relocated his family to his own farm, which he was purchasing on a mortgage and which was located in Maguire Township, near the town of Frederick, in Tillman County, Oklahoma. Living with him and Mary ("Mollie") were Josie and Mattie (his daughters by his first wife, Lillian), his (step?)daughter, Bertha, and his and Mary's four daughters, Myrtle, Lavina, Lula, and Hattie.[e] The 1910 Census schedule shows Wright to have been married twice, but Mary only once. Had Mary actually been married to Stephen Graham? Was Mary's daughter Bertha illegitimate? This would seem to be the likely case. Intriguingly, it is even possible that Bertha was actually Wright's illegitimate daughter by Mary, her birth being the cause of Wright's divorce from Lillian. Whether or not this is the case, however, we shall probably never know.
By the 1920 Census, Wright and Mary, now aged 63 and 48, were living alone on their farm in Maguire Township, Tillman County.[f] The 1930 U.S. Census found Wright still living in Maguire Township, Tillman County. He was shown as a widower aged 72, owning his own residence, with property valued at $3,500. Living with Wright was Mae West, a widow aged 54. The census schedule lists her as Wright's wife, but the "wife" is crossed out and "relative ?" is written above it. Mae West was probably Wright's common-law wife. Wright is shown as having been married for twenty-one years, and Mae for twenty-four years.[i] If Wright had married Mary Graham in 1894, her death twenty-one years later would have occurred in 1915, which cannot be correct since Mary was alive at the 1920 Census. Perhaps their actual marriage was delayed for several years after they began co-habiting. Living near Wright in 1930 was his son Walter and Walter's wife Ida.
On 2 February 1936, Wright sustained a stroke and died of apoplexy the next day at the age of 79 at his farm near Frederick. He had become estranged from most of his children by his first wife as a result of the breakup of the family. The known exceptions were his son Walter Allen, who later in life owned his own farm near Wright's in Tillman County,[g] and Josie and Mattie, who were living with Wright and Mary in 1910.[e] At the time of death, Wright was still living with May West (his common-law wife?), indicating that Mary had died prior to 1936.[h] Wright was buried in Bethel Cemetery in Frederick, Tillman County, Oklahoma.[h]

Notes for LILLIAN MAY
"MADALENA" CONNELLY:
[The writer's great-grandmother.]
Lillian May Connelly, the daughter of Howard Connelly and Eliza Jane Atchison, was born in 1859 in Missouri, during the Presidency of JAMES BUCHANAN. She died in 1910 at St Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri. Lillian married first in about 1879, presumably in Easton, Leavenworth County, Kansas, where Lillian's parents lived, Wright Allen Clinkenbeard, born 8 October 1857 in Jefferson County, Kansas, died 3 February 1936 in Frederick, Tillman County, Kansas, son of William Clinkenbeard and Ann Eliza Allen. Lillian married, second perhaps in 1894 in Missouri, (John Phyllips?).
Sometime between 1864 and 1869, when she was aged five to ten, Lillian's family moved from Missouri, probably Clinton County where they were living in 1850,[a] to Easton, Leavenworth County, Kansas.[b] After her marriage to Wright, the couple established a home on their farm in Jefferson Township, Jefferson County, Kansas. There, Lillian gave birth to eight children. After the birth of her eighth child in March 1894, Lillian and Wright Allen Clinkenbeard divorced, an unusual and radical step bordering on tragedy in the Victorian era. At the time of the divorce, seven of the children were taken to live with relatives. The eighth, Ernest, aged four at the time, was apparently taken by Lillian to live with her in Missouri, reportedly in St Louis, Buchanan County, for he is the only one of the eight missing from relatives' homes at the time of the 1900 Census. It is unknown how much, if any, contact Lillian subsequently had with the seven children, but apparently it was very little, if any.
Presumably, Ernest was reared by Lillian and her second husband (a Mr John Phyllips?) along with the two children born to them (in St Louis, Buchanan County, Missouri?)---Beatrice Virginia in 1897, and a son born in about 1899 who died an infant.[c] Although Lillian's second husband's name reportedly was "Phyllips," no trace of Lillian after her divorce has been found under this name.[c] Lillian appears to have been living in St Louis, Buchanan County, Missouri, until her death in 1910.

Notes for M
ARY "MOLLY" WILLIAMS:
At the 1900 U.S. Census, Mollie was listed as having four children, all living. The 1910 U.S. Census schedule showed Mollie as having had nine children, five of whom were living---Bertha, (Mollie's illegitimate daughter by Stephen Graham? or Wright's illegitimate daughter?), Myrtle, Vina, Lula, and Hattie. Also living with Wright and Mollie were his daughters by his first wife, Josie and Mattie.
Regarding whether or not Mary had actually been married to Stephen Graham, the 1910 Census schedule shows Mary to have been married only once, and Wright twice. Had Mary actually been married to Stephen Graham? Was Mary's daughter Bertha a child born out of wedlock to Mary and Wright, her birth being the cause of Wright's divorce from Lillian? It would seem likely. The 1930 U.S. Census showed that Wright had been married twenty-one years, which would give Mary's year of death as 1915 on the basis of their marriage year of 1894. This is incorrect, however, for Mary was still living at the 1920 U.S. Census.

As a result of his parent's divorce in 1893/4, Kenneth was taken at the age of four or five to live with his maternal grandparents, Howard and Eliza Jane (Atchison) Connelly, who subsequently raised him. As a young man, he moved to the San Francisco Bay region of California. At the 1920 Federal Census, he was aged thirty-one and unmarried, was living in Vallejo, Solano County, and was working in the shipyards there as a moulder. Kenneth, or Uncle Calvin as he was known to the writer, was a quiet, kind gentleman of impeccable dress and taste.

viii.   ERNEST CLINKENBEARD, b. March 1891, (Winchester?), Jefferson County, Kansas; d. Unknown.
  Notes for ERNEST CLINKENBEARD:
It is assumed that, at the time of his parents' tragic divorce in about 1894, Ernest, the only child not accounted for in the 1900 Census, was kept by his mother, Lillian, and was taken by her to live in Missouri, perhaps in the town of St Joseph in Buchanan County.

  Notes for HATTIE (VIOLA?) CLINKENBEARD:
The death certificate of Wright Allen Clinkenbeard listed the informant as ". . ttie Viola Woods." Although the first part of the Christian name was illegible, this has to have been Wright and Mary's youngest daughter Hattie under her married name, "Woods." Hattie was living at 202 North 15th Street, Frderick, Oklahoma. [Death Certificate of Wright Allen Clinkenbeard; Oklahoma State Dept. of Health, 302 Registered No. 43.]
