Notes for W
ILLIAM THOMAS JEFFERSON CLINKENBEARD:
[The writer's great-granduncle.]
William, christened "William Thomas Clinkenbeard" ("Jefferson" was a later addition), was the youngest son of William and Ann Eliza (Allen) Clinkenbeard, and the ninth of their ten children, two of whom did not survive infancy. The 1923 obituary for William Thomas's mother listed six living children and stated:

"Ann Eliza Allen [sic] . . is survived . . by three sons and three daughters, Mrs. Dora Rice, Los Angeles, Cal.; Mrs. Mollie Michael, Santa Cruz, Cal.; Mrs. Belle Hull Sublette, Idaho; W.A. Clinkenbeard, Manitou, Okla.; L.O. Clinkenbeard, New Market, Mo.; W.T.J. Clinkenbeard, St. Joseph, Mo."[a]

In May 2001, the writer found the following message that had been posted on the Internet in January AD 2000 by Allen D. Belrose of Birmingham, Alabama:

"Looking for info on Anna Eliza (1837-1923) Think she was married to my ggrandfather William Clinkenbeard (1819-1894). They had a son William Thomas (my grandfather) who married Jennie Lee Miller in 1902. I think Anna and William migrated to CA and that she is buried in Madeira, CA. I would like to know the names of the other children Anna and William had."[e]

The writer contacted Allen Belrose (William's grandson and the writer's second cousin once removed) and was told that after his mother's death he

". . . started digging through my mother's old pictures. She [Opal Clinkenbeard] died in 1991 after living with us for about 1 year and 8 mos. She was a very sick person for most of that time but we spent many blessed hours together. She tried to give me all the information she could but unfortunately her own information was limited due to the fact that her mother died in 1927 when my mother was only barely 6 years old. Her only living sister finished raising her beginning in 1931. There was 15 yrs difference in their ages and her sister had two children of her own. This was depression time of course and they had moved here from Mo. to take a job with the local morning newspaper. Her father WTJ did not remarry until late in life and could not take care of her."[b]

Elsewhere, Allen stated that

"My great grandfather was William Clinkenbeard born in 1839 [sic] and married Anna Eliza about 1870. They had at least one son and I'm sure there were other siblings . . . Their son (my mother's father) was William Thomas J. Clinkenbeard and they were from Winchester Kansas . . . he married Jennie Lee Miller in 1902 and they lived in St Joseph, Mo. They had 3 daughters one of which was my mother Opal Genevieve Clinkenbeard in 1919. She died in 1991 on her 72nd birthday. William Thomas, Jennie Lee and one infant daughter Jennie Fern are buried together in Mt Auburn cemetery in St Joseph. He lived until 1953. I have many pictures . . ."[c]

Allen told the writer the tragic story of his mother's sister, Jennie Fern, who was bitten by a rabid dog in 1914 and died soon afterward. Allen supplied a photograph of the two beautiful young sisters, Fern and Gladys, which was taken after it was learned that Fern would die from the dog bite. In the photograph, the bite wound on Fern's left hand is clearly visible.
The 1910 U.S. Census enumerated William and his family as follows:[f]

Family living at 1214, 4th Avenue, St Joseph (1st Ward), Washington Twp., Buchanan Co., Missouri.
Clinkenbeard, William T. Head 34 (1876) mar. 7 yrs b. Ks. Fa: Ky. Mo: Ky

--- Gladys B. Dau 5 (1905) b. Mo. Fa: Ks. Mo: Mo.
--- Jennie F. Dau 2 (1908) b. Mo. Fa: Ks. Mo: Mo

At the 1920 U.S. Census, William and Jennie, with their daughters Gladys and Opal, were still living in Saint Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri.[d] Their home, which William rented, was located at number 1214 Ellsworth Avenue. William was listed as a 43-year-old carpenter with the railroad. He was shown born in Kansas, his father in Kentucky, and his mother in Missouri. Living with the family was William's sister-in-law, Mary E. Miller, aged 42, born in Missouri.[d]
Enumerated under the name of Thomas at the 1930 U.S. Census, the widowed William, a Laborer in the Parks industry, was living at 1214 Fourth Avenue in St Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri:[g]
