Ælftred de Taillebois, 2d Baron Kendal, who was known as "The Englishman", appears not to have accompanied his father to England as a companion of Duke William of Normandy at the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066. Most sources show Ælftred's parents to be "Ives (Ivo) Taillebois (Earl/Anjou)" and "Lucia of Mercia" and estimate his birth year as "about 1072".[a] The evidence documenting Ælftred, Lord Kendal, as Ivo's son has not been seen by this writer, who is tentatively accepting him in that relationship based solely upon such acceptance by many other researchers. As to his year of birth, his having inherited the title indicates that he was the eldest son, which suggests a birth year of about 1040.
