Gilbert de Tailbois, 3d Baron of Kendal, is believed to have been born in Normandy, France. Lord Kendal is sometimes shown as the son of Ivo de Taillebois by his second wife, Lucy, Countess of Chester,[a] but current research reportedly suggests that Ivo and Lucy had no issue.[b] A primary historian of the Radclyffe family shows Gilbert, Lord Kendal, as Ælftred's son and Ivo's grandson.[c]

[WARNING: It is not clear whether there was one or two persons named "Lucy" or "Lucia", the sources providing confusing data on this point.]
Several sources show "Lucia Tailbois, [born] about 1042 [in] Anjou or Normandy, France", or born "between 1057 and 1089", as the daughter of "Ivo de Taillebois" and "Lucy Malet" or "Lucia of Mercia".[a] However, another source places "FitzGilbert" after Lucy's Christian name, which supports the assumption that she was a daughter of Gilbert de Furnesco de Taillebois and a granddaughter of Ivo de Taillebois. Accordingly, the writer is listing her as such, absent any documentation whatever regarding her.
