6. SIR NICHOLAS FITZGILBERT DE5 RADECLIVE (GILBERT DE4 TAILBOIS, 3RD BARON OF KENDAL, ÆLFTRED DE3 TAILLEBOIS, 2D BARON OF KENDAL, IVO DE2, REINFRED1)24 was born about 1090 in England, and died Unknown.

Notes for S
IR NICHOLAS FITZGILBERT DE RADECLIVE:
[The writer's twenty-seventh great grandfather.]
Sir Nicholas, a younger son of Gilbert de Tailbois, was the Founder of the House of Radclyffe and was born during the reign of King WILLIAM II (Rufus). According to Clarence Earl Ratcliff, some records have Sir Nicholas as being the son of Ivo while other records show him as Ivo's great-grandson.[a] One source contains the following two entries that relate to this question:[b]
· Nicholas (FitzGilbert) de RADCLIFFE; Birth: Abt. 1070 Radcliffe, Lancashire, England; Father: Gilbert TALBOT.
· NICHOLAS RADECLIVE (DE TAILBOIS); Birth: 1097 <radcliffe Tower>, Lancashire, England; Father: IVO DE TAILBOIS; Mother: LUCIA MALET.
A review of the dates, ancestors, and descendants of Ivo indicates that Sir Nicholas most probably would have been Ivo's great-grandson and not his son. Researchers frequently give Sir Nicholas's birth year, without supporting documentation, as "between 1097 and 1100". This period does not seem to be supportable for two reasons: First, Sir Nicholas's son Henry witnessed the Deed of Foundation of Burscough Priory in 1124. If Henry had been sixteen in 1124, probably the earliest that one could be a legal witness to a document in that era, he would have to have been born in 1108 or before. If Sir Nicholas had been born in 1097 or later, he would have been at most eleven years old in 1108 and rather young to be a father. Second, Ivo reportedly died in 1094, too soon for Sir Nicholas's birth in 1097 or later. Thus, Sir Nicholas would appear to have been Ivo's great-grandson.
Sir Nicholas changed his name from "de Tailbois" to "de Radeclive" meaning of or from Radcliffe, so named because of the red cliffs along the River Irwell where the village of Radcliffe was built. Henceforth, his descendants would be known under the name of "Radeclive" which later became "Radclyffe" or Ratcliffe". Sir Nicholas, a knight, was given the Manor of Radeclive by his lord, and may have been the builder of Radcliffe Tower in the village of Radcliffe in Lancashire, England. Sir Nicholas "married a Saxon of the Booths."[a]
The village of Radcliffe (now a municipal borough of Lancashire) is described in the ENCYCLOPÆDIA BRITANNICA as follows:
"RADCLIFFE, a municipal borough (1935) of Lancashire, Eng.; lies on the River Irwell, 8 mi. (13 km.) NNW of Manchester by road. Pop. (1961) 26,726. In Domesday Book the town appears as Radeclive, 'red cliff.' The parish church of St. Bartholomew preserves a few Norman features and memorials to members of the Radcliffe family; the south transept dates from the 15th century. Radcliffe Tower, now a ruin, was rebuilt in 1403."[b]
