Notes for L
ORD RICHARD DE RATCLYFFE, ESQ., OF RADCLIFFE TOWER:
[The writer's twenty-second great grandfather.]
Richard de Ratclyffe, the eldest son and heir of Robert de Radclyffe, was a gallant soldier of the Scottish wars, gave public service freely, and received many honours from King EDWARD I.[a] Amongst these was a royal charter, given at Stirling on 11 August 1304 by EDWARD, granting Richard free warren and chase in all the King's demesne lands at Radcliffe.[b] Lord Richard's name is mentioned often in the Charter Deeds of Whalley, and as a juror at the Hundred Court of Salford, and in The Trafford Evidences. On 12 July 1291 at a Privy Council held at Stirling, a grant was issued to Richard, as lord of the Lancashire border, to levy custom on goods for sale brought across the causeway of Blakesteynegge (Blackstone Edge) from Yorkshire. Lord Richard was also appointed Seneschal and Minister of the King's Forests of Blackburnshire.[c]
According to one family historian, "Richard was the fountain-head from whom the greater glory of the Radclyffe name sprang, and his well-lived and usefully employed life came to an end in 1326."[c] Richard is documented in the years 1276 and 1304.[d]
