William was born in the third year of the reign of King EDWARD III. His wife, Susannah, was the sister of Matilda, the second wife of William de Radclyffe of Todmorden, and of Sir Piers de Legh, who married Margaret D'Anyers, widow of John de Radclyffe of Ordsall. Another of her brothers was Sir Robert de Legh, High Sheriff of Cheshire from 1393 to 1398.[a]
According to another source, William served as High Sheriff of Lancaster in 1358, and was living in Radclyffe Tower in that year.[b]

IR THOMAS DE RATCLIFF, OF WINMARLEIGH:
      Sir Thomas inherited from his father the lands of Winmarleigh and Clitheroe. In 1371 he was granted the Manor of Astley by the Duke of Lancaster. In the Wars with France, Sir Thomas served with distinction as an esquire to John of Gaunt. He was Steward of Blackburnshire in 1385. In 1394, he was appointed to the Commission of the Peace for the county of Lancaster, and was made Constable of the King's Castle at Lancaster, receiving an annual salary of £13. 6s. 8d. Sir Thomas resided chiefly at "The Alleys", the manor-house at Clitheroe, and founded a chantry in the south aisle of Clitheroe Church which became the burial place of the Winmarleigh Radclyffes.
