Notes for SARAH RATCLIFF:
[The writer's third great grandmother.]
Sarah, the daughter of Amos Ratcliff and Eleanor Cashatt, was born 19 February 1797 in Chatham County, North Carolina, during the Presidency of GEORGE WASHINGTON. Sarah died in 1875. One source[a] states that she probably died in Jefferson Township, Clinton County, Ohio. However, another source (the citation has been lost) states she died in Highland County, Ohio. Before the age of ten, Sarah's father removed his Quaker family to Highland County, Ohio, the move taking place sometime between 1800 and 1807. It was there in 1816 that she married Joseph Hinshaw, son of Absolom Hinshaw and Elizabeth Hinshaw, born 7 March 1791 in Randolph County, North Carolina. Sarah's worn tombstone in Leedy Cemetery , Andrews, Dallas Township, Huntington County, Indiana, gives the date of her death as 20 April 1878. Other sources show the year of her death as 1867[a], 1873[b], or 1875[b]. The correct date of death, however, was 20 April 1873, as confirmed by the inscription on her tombstone that at the time of her death she was aged "76y 2m 9d".
Sarah's descent was through the Radclyffes of the Tower, the main branch of the family. Her line of direct descent was back through Richard Ratcliffe, Esq., the Progenitor of the American branch, to John Radclyffe (1485-1545), the illegitimate son of John Radclyffe (1459-1513), to Sir Nicholas de Radeclive (b. 1097-1100), to Lord Ivo de Taillebois (c.1036-1094), to the Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne (742-813/4), to Walter (c.230-306), King of the Franks, and finally to Antenor (d. c.443 B.C.), King of the Cimmerians. Sarah's family, both before and after the Norman Conquest, has been one of the leading noble families of England and has played a continuous role in the shaping of that nation. Also, through her ancestry back to Antenor, one of the best documented lines in this family history, she descended direct from the royal families of England and France.
The following facts are found in entries in the old family Bible of John and Ann (Farmer) Ratcliff:[c]

"John Ratcliff and Ann Farmer were married, Dobbs Co., NC, 1748, 8m, 7d. Children and birthdates as follows:

Notes for JOSEPH HINSHAW:
[The writer's third great-grandfather.]
Joseph was born in Randolph County, North Carolina, on 7 March 1791 during the Presidency of GEORGE WASHINGTON. He died on 20 April 1867, perhaps in Jefferson Township, Clinton County, Ohio. Joseph married Sarah Ratcliff, daughter of Amos Ratcliff and Eleanor Cashatt, and Joseph's brother John married Sarah Ratcliff's sister Margaret.
One Joseph Hinshaw was shown in the 1820 U.S. Census to be living in Surry County, North Carolina, but it would appear that he was probably not our Joseph's great-uncle, for our Joseph had removed from North Carolina before 1816, the year of his marriage in Highland County, Ohio. The 1830 U.S. Census found Joseph living in Clinton County, Ohio, with John living nearby, and the 1840 Census located them in the Jefferson District of Clinton County, with John still living nearby. Again in 1850, Joseph is found living in the Jefferson District of the County, with his wife Sarah, his sons Garner and Amos, and his daughters Margaret, Sarah, and Ann. And again, Joseph's brother John was living nearby.[a]
The 1850 Census schedule located the family's residence specifically in "District No. 163, Jefferson Twp., Clinton County, Ohio" and enumerated the following:[b]

---Joseph Hinshaw, 59 [1791], M, Farmer, [Real Estate Value] $900, [born] N.C., Cannot read or write.
---Sarah " , 53 [1797], F, [born] N.C., Cannot read or write.
---Amos " , 31 [1819], M, Laborer, [born] N.C.
---Margaret " , 21 [1829], F, [born] Ohio.
---Garner " , 19 [1831], M, Laborer, Ohio.
---Sarah " , 16 [1834], 16, F, Ohio.
---Ann " , 14 [1836], F, Ohio.

Living nearby were the families of Joseph's brother, John, and of Joseph's daughter, Rebecca.
At sometime after the 1850 Census, Joseph moved his family to Indiana, for the 1860 U.S. Census enumerated them in Dallas Township, Huntington County, Indiana, where they were living with their daughter, Ann Hinshaw Pobst, and her family[c]:

---Joseph Hinshaw, age 69, born in North Carolina, farmer.
---Sarah Hinshaw, age 63, born in north Carolina.

At the time of his and his wife's deaths, they were living in or near Andrews in Dallas Township, Huntington County, Indiana. Joseph's tombstone in Leedy Cemetery, Andrews, Dallas Township, Huntington County, shows his age at the time of death to have been "76y 1m 10d" (evidently the date of burial; at his death he apparently was aged 76 years, one month, and thirteen days).

Children of SARAH RATCLIFF and JOSEPH HINSHAW are:

  Notes for ROBERT HINSHAW:
Robert may be the same person as the Robert Hinshaw who married Abigail Chamnes on 25 January 1846 in Orange County, North Carolina. Abigail was the child of Joseph Chamness and Elizabeth Woody. At the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting (Quaker), Abigail (formerly Chamness) condemned her "marriage out of unity," the implication being that Robert was not a member in good standing of the Society. Does this mean that the couple were separating, or that their marriage was annulled?
On 1 April 1848, Abigail was granted a certificate to the Fairfield Monthly Meeting, Wayne County, Indiana. At the West Grove Monthly Meeting, Indiana, on 12 August 1848, Abigail was received on a certificate from the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting, North Carolina.

In 1860, Anne was living with the family of her sister Sarah (Hinshaw) Pobst in Dallas Township, Huntington County, Indiana.[a] Anne was living in Antioch, Indiana, during the Civil War.[b] Twice married, Anne's first husband was [----?----] Burton.[c] In 1872 she married John Milikan.
By January 1890, Anne was living in Lawrence, Kansas.[d] At her death in McLouth, Anne was buried at Wild Horse Cemetery, Jefferson County, Kansas. Her obituary read as follows:[e]
