She married ROBERT SINCLAIR 2 June 1842 in Clinton County, Ohio, likely in Jefferson Township190,191,192, son of WILLIAM SINCLAIR and MARY GILBERT. He was born 25 February 1819 in Ohio, presumably in Highland County193,194, and died 20 February 1901 in Leavenworth County, Kansas, probably in the village of Alexandria195.

Notes for ELEANOR HINSHAW:
[This compiler's great-great-grandmother.]
Eleanor, the daughter of Joseph Hinshaw and Sarah Ratcliff, was born on 27 January 1827 in Jefferson Township, Clinton County, Ohio, during the Presidency of JOHN QUINCY ADAMS. She died on 23 November 1909 in McLouth, Jefferson County, Kansas. At the age of fifteen, Eleanor married Robert Sinclair, son of William Sinclair and Mary Gilbert, born 25 February 1819 in Ohio (presumably in Highland County), died 20 February 1901 in McLouth, Jefferson County, Kansas.
Except for the failure of her marriage, which ended tragically in divorce,[a] little is known of Eleanor's life. The divorce took place in Leavenworth County, Kansas,[a] sometime between 1880 and 1888, but the couple may have separated earlier since Robert is shown living alone at the 1880 U.S. Census.[b] Of Eleanor and her eleven brothers and sisters, only five, including Eleanor, are known to have lived to old age --- Rebecca, who died at age 83, John Garner Hinshaw at 81, Anne at 68, Levi at 63, and Eleanor who lived to the age of 82. Five did not live to the age of fifty: Robert died at about 45, Amos at 33, Simon at 26, Nathan at one year, and Ruth at birth. The death dates of two, Margaret and Sarah, have not been discovered.
At her death, Eleanor was buried at Wild Horse Cemetery in Jefferson County, Kansas. Eleanor's obituary read:

"Death of Mrs. Sinclair
"Eleanor Hinshaw was born January 27, 1827, died at her daughter's Mrs. Charles Edmonds, November 23,1909, age 82 years, 9 months and 26 days. She married in 1842 to Mr. Robert Sinclair. There were born to this union four children, one of whom is living. She was a member of the Christian Church. Funeral services were held at Mrs. Chas. Edmonds' home November 24 conducted by Rev E.E. McAferty. She was buried at Wild Horse Cemetery by the side of her sister, Mrs. John Millikan (Anna Hinshaw, 9 Jan. 1836 - 15 Dec. 1904)."[c]

One researcher has written: "I have a picture of Louisa and Charles Edmonds but none of her [and Eleanor's] parents. I have learned there was a Sinkler Photo Studio so I am hoping to track one down."[a] A copy of the picture was sent to the writer by this researcher. The writer has a four-generation photograph, taken in about 1905/6, of his great-great-grandmother Eleanor with her daughter Lavina Sinclair, her grandson John Cosgrove, and her great-granddaughter Ethel Cosgrove, the writer's mother.
Eleanor's ancestry includes royalty by direct descent, and by marriage as follows: Two of the sons of Eleanor's 5th great-grandfather, Sir Thomas Henshall / Henshawe (b. c.1582), were her 4th great grandfather, John Henshall (b. 1607/8), and her 4th great-granduncle, William Henshawe (b. 1611/2). William married Katherine Houghton who descended in a direct line from King EDWARD III and thus from all the English Kings before him back to WILLIAM the Conqueror. William Henshawe was killed in England in 1644 whilst fighting with the Royalist forces of King CHARLES I during the Civil War. Finally, through her mother, Sarah Ratcliff, Eleanor descended direct from the Emperor CHARLEMAGNE, and through him back to ANTENOR, King of the Cimmerians, who died in about 443 B.C.!

Notes for ROBERT SINCLAIR:
[The writer's great-great-grandfather.]
Robert was born in Ohio on 25 February 1819 during the Presidency of JAMES MONROE. He died on 20 February 1901 in Leavenworth County, Kansas. Robert married Eleanor Hinshaw, daughter of Joseph Hinshaw and Sarah Ratcliff. Eleanor was born in 27 January 1827 in Jefferson Township, Clinton County, Ohio, and died on 23 november 1909 in McLouth, Jefferson County, Kansas.
In the "Record of Marriage License Issued" book of Clinton County, Ohio, is the following entry: "1842, May 28th, No. 696, Robert Sinclair, of lawful age etc., and Eleanor Hinshaw, On Personal consent of her Father."[a] The County's "Record of Marriages" book states:

"Clinton County ss On the 2nd day of June 1842, I Solemnized the marriage of Robert Sinclair with Eleanor Hinshaw. s/John Hammer, J.P., June 11th 1842. Filed June 11th 1842 & Recorded 28 June 1842. L. Fitzhugh, Clerk."[b]

The locations of Robert and Eleanor's marriage, and their children's births as given in the U.S. Censuses of 1850 and 1860, show that the family were living in Clinton County, Ohio, from their marriage in 1842 to the birth there of their first child, Asa, in 1843, and that by 1846 they had moved to Marion, Grant County, Indiana, where their second child, Lavina, was born in that year. By 1848, when their third child, Simon, was born, the family were again living in Ohio, but the 1850 U.S. Census found them back in Indiana in the 52d District, Huntington County.[c] A Warranty Deed dated 27 October 1853 shows Robert to have purchased from his brother, William, 84-1/2 acres of land in Grant County, Indiana, for $1,200.[d] In a Warranty Deed dated 21 April 1855, Robert and Eleanor Sinclair are shown selling apparently the same 84-1/2 acres of land to Joseph Bloomer for $1,600.[e] It may have been at that time, but certainly between 1855 and 1860, that the family moved to Jackson Township, Miami County, Indiana, where they were living at the time of the 1860 Census.[f] At that Census, according to L. Wolff, a third-great-grandchild of Robert's, Robert's post office address was Xenia in Jackson Township, Miami County, Indiana.[g] The obituary of Robert's daughter Louisa states that "When she was twenty years of age, her father moved his family to a farm home in Leavenworth County, [Kansas]."[s] Thus, in view of Louisa's 1850 birth date, Robert moved to Leavenworth County, Kansas, in 1870.
In a deed recorded on 14 February 1879, Robert is shown purchasing for $800 40 acres in Grant County, Indiana, from his brother William.[h] Curiously, that same property seems to have been sold on that same day by Robert to Malinda (Matilda?) Sinclair for $810.[i]
One source states that a Robert Sinclair served in the Civil War under Captain William R. Coldren in Company I (or K) of the 118th Indiana Infantry Regiment from 3 September 1863, when he was aged 44, until he was mustered out on 3 March 1864, and that he served a second tour of duty in Company F of the 153rd Indiana Infantry Regiment from March 1865 until he was mustered out on 4 September 1865.[j] However, the National Archives reported locating "a pension application file Min 0 444-905 for a soldier named Robert Sinclair who served in Co. F, 153rd Ind. Inf. & K, 118th Ind. Inf. . . and died 12/19/1880 at Dillman, Ind. His widow was 2nd [wife] Nancy".[k] Assuming the date of death to be correct, this would not appear to be our Robert Sinclair. The National Archives records the following Civil War soldiers named Robert Sinclair:[p]

---Sinclair, Robert, Co. K, 42d Indiana Infantry. Corporal*; Private**; St Clair, Robert; Union Army.
---Sinclair, Robert, Co. K, 118th Indiana Infantry. Private*; Private**; Union Army.
---Sinclair, Robert, Co. F, 153d Indiana Infantry. Private*; Private**; Union Army.
---Sinclair, Robert G., Co. C, 30th Ohio Inf. Private*; Private**; St Clair, Robert G.; Union Army; enlisted 25 July 1861 at age 18 [b. 1843].
* Rank when inducted. ** Rank when discharged.

As seen, the above Robert G. Sinclair was born in 1843, and the Robert of the 118th and 153d regiments died in 1880. Thus, if our Robert served in the Civil War, it would seem to be the Robert of the 42d Indiana Infantry Regiment.
Tragically, Robert and Eleanor separated sometime before 1880 and were legally divorced between 1880 and 1888 in Leavenworth County, Kansas.[o] The causes of the divorce have not been discovered. The 1880 Federal Census disclosed that as of 1 June 1880 Robert was living alone next door to his son Simon Sinclair in Alexandria Township, Leavenworth County, Kansas.[l] He was shown to be 61 years old (born 1819), a farmer, born in Ohio, and both his parents were shown to have been born in Virginia. It is unknown when Robert removed to Kansas, but it would have been before 1873 when his daughter Lavina was married in Springdale, Leavenworth County, Kansas.
At his death in 1901, Robert was buried in Bethel Cemetery, Leavenworth County.[m] The newspaper announcement of his death read:

"Mr. Robert Sinclair died Wednesday morning of paralysis, aged 83 years. He was buried Thursday at Bethel. The deceased was the father of Mrs. Chas. Edmonds and Mrs Hugh Cosgrove of north of town."[n]

(An unidentified Lilly May Sinclair was buried in Bethel Cemetery, with no birth date being listed, but a death date being given of 11 March 188?.)[m]
THE HISTORY OF LEAVENWORTH COUNTY, KANSAS, published in 1921 and containing an historical narrative about the county and its early businesses and families, includes mention of Robert Sinclair.[q] Robert also appears in PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD OF LEAVENWORTH, DOUGLAS, AND FRANKLIN COUNTIES, KANSAS, published in 1899.[r] Neither of these works has been examined.
