Notes for A
BNER SINCLAIR:
Abner was born in Indiana, the third child of Gilbert Sinclair and Rebecca Hinshaw. (Gilbert was the brother of Robert Sinclair and Rebecca was the sister of Eleanor Hinshaw, Robert and Eleanor being the writer's great-great-grandparents.)
The Civil War began in 1861 when Abnet was aged twenty-one. On 20 July 1863, according to his Pension documents, Abner joined the Union Army for a period of six months at Huntington, Huntington County, Indiana. He was mustered as a Private into Company F, 118th Indiana Infantry Regiment, on 28 July 1863, and was honourably discharged at Indianapolis on 1 March 1864. His Pension documents describe him as 5 ft. 5 inches in height, light complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, and engaged in farming. The documents state that following his military service, he moved to Kansas in 1870, thence to Colorado, and then to Oklahoma.[a]
Soon after moving to Kansas in 1870, Abner married, in 1871, Minerva Potts, the widow of Nathan Vickers. Following the couples marriage, the family lived in Chautauqua County, Kansas, where they received a land patent. However, in 1887, Abner moved his family to Miami County, Kansas, making the journey by covered wagon. In 1890, Abner left his family, stayed for a time in Colorado, and then moved to Oklahoma where, at the time of his death in 1918, he was living in Pawhuska, Osage County. Abner was buried in Chautauqua County, Kansas.[b]
Abner's daughter, Ora (Sinclair) Benson, wrote a short family history in February 1972 in which she said: "Abner Sinclair was born in Indiana and I do not know what year he came to Kansas. He and Minerva Potts-Vickers were married in 1871 and went at once to Chautauqua Co., Kansas. They lived there until the fall of 1887 when they moved back to Miami Co., locating on a farm four miles North of Paola. They made that move in covered wagons. The movers were the parents, grandma Sinclair, and eight children, Ida, Edd, Effie, Fred, Dora, Ora, Nora and Bertha. The youngest child, Willie, was born June 12, 1888, and died Dec. 31, 1889. He was buried in a private Cemetary northeast of Block, on the farm formerly owned by Grandpa Potts.
"The second day of January 1890 father [Abner Sinclair] took grandma [Rebecca] Sinclair to Lawrence, Kansas to live with her sister, Aunt Ann Burton. He never came back to live with us, was back to see us about three times. He died in Okla in 1918 and was buried in Chautauqua County, Kansas the same cemetery where grandma and Uncle John Sinclair were buried."[b]

Notes for A
SA SINCLAIR:
[The writer's great-granduncle.]
Civil War Soldier.
At the time of the 1880 Census, Asa and his family were living in Aldine, Norton County, Kansas, on 26 Jun 1880. The births of children show that the family were living in Indiana in 1868, in Nebraska in 1869, back in Indiana in 1871, and then in Kansas from 1873 onwards.[a]
Asa served during the Civil War, enlisting in Company F, 16th Indiana Infantry Regiment, on 23 July 1862 at Peru, Miami County, Indiana.[b,c] At the time of enlistment, he was living in Wabash, Indiana.[c] Asa was discharged at the "end of war" on 30 June 1865 at New Orleans, Lousiana.[c]
Asa's regiment participated in the following actions during the Civil War:[c]

---Ball's Bluff, Virginia, 21-22 October 1861.
---Chickasaw Bayou, Mississippi, 27-31 December 1862.
---Arkansas Post, Arkansas, 11 January 1863.
---Black River Bridge, Mississippi, 17 May 1863.

A detachment of the 16th Infantry was at:

---Collierville, Tennessee, 11 October 1863.

On 24 October 1879 Asa filed, from Kansas, an invalid pension application, No. 318429.[b] His Disability Pension file provided the following information:[c]
Asa was living in Wabash, Indiana, when he enlisted on 23 July 1862 at Peru, Miami County, Indiana. He was discharged at "end of war" on 30 June 1865 at New Orleans, Louisiana According to a Declaration for Pension, Asa was decribed as being 5'5" tall with light complexion, black eyes, and black hair. He was further described as a farmer, born in Clinton County, Ohio. After his discharge from service, he lived in Wabash, Indiana, for about seven years. In 1873, he moved to Leavenworth, Kansas. Asa's Pensioner's Certificate was No. 387,793, and he received a Civil War Pension of $16 to $24.
A letter dated 22 March 1883 from the Surgeon General's Office, Record and Pension Division (Joyce's Asa Pension #2) stated:

"Sir: I have the honor to return herewith your request for a report of hospital treatment in Claim No. 318429, with such information as is furnished by the records filed in this Office, viz: that Asa Sinclair, Private, Co. F. 16 Indiana Vols received a slight shell wound at the Battle of Arkansas Post January 11, 1863. The records of Hospital Lexington Ky from June to November 1862 furnish no evidence in this case. There are no records of the Regiment on file, nor of Arkansas Post, Ark."[c]

The letter was signed by J.J.Woodward, Surgeon, U.S.Army.
Asa's pension file included the affidavit of Sarah E. Smith, aged 30 years, housekeeper, whose P.O.address was Wilmot, Furnas County, Nebraska. Smith declared

"that she has known claimant who is a farmer since 1865, during which time she has lived about 1/2 mile from him, during which time he has been suffering from an injury to left hip, Rhuematism, and Chronic Diarrhira [sic], causing him to lose fully 1/2 his time and rendering him unable to perform more than 1/2 of an able-bodied man's labor. That she sees him on an average of three times a week and has worked for him, and is aware of his condition from personal knowledge and abservation arising from an intimate acquaintance with him, and has frequently visited him when ill, and has aided his family. And she further declared that she has no interest in said case, and is not concerned in its prosecution."[c]

The pension records also included a General Affidavit dated in April 1895:

"Levi Benton, aged 51 yrs. & Levi Jones, aged 53 yrs, both residents of the National Millitary Home, Leavenworth Coutny Kansas, whose P.O addresses are the same, ste in relation to claim as follows to-wit: That they have personally known the claimant for over two years, both affiants, together with claimant, being members of the National Military Home, Leavenworth County, Kansas, and meeting and conversing together frequently, nearly every day for weeks at a time; that they are intimate with the claimant and are conversant with his character and habits, which, the affiants firmly declare are and have always been, to their knowledge since they have known him, of the very best: that claimant is a man of unexceptionable habits, does not drink nor is he addicted to any habits of a vicious nature, and affiants therefore are firmly and unhesitatingly of the belief that the disabilities of claimant, viz:- piles, rheumatism, frozen feet, loss of two great toes, were not caused by vicious habits. They also believe that such disabilities are of permanent character and wholly disable claimant for manual labor, basing such belief upon the fact that they see claimant constantly and note his condition from general appearances. Affiants further declare that this statement was prepared for typewriting in their presence and only from their oral declaration, by E.B.Wheeler, at the National Military Home, Leavenworth County, Kansas, April 29th, 1895, and that in making this statement they did not use, and were not aided or prompted by any written or printed statement or recital prepared or dictated by any other person, and not attached as an exhibit to his testimony. Affiants further declare that they have no interest whatever in the prosecution of this claim."[c]

An affidavit given by Asa was also part of the pension records. The undated General Affidavit (Joyce's Asa Pension #3) stated:

"Asa Sinclair personally came before me, a clerk of the district court in and for the county and state of Leavenworth, Kansas. His address is P.O., Springdale, Leavenworth County, Kansas. He declares as follows: that he can not furnish the testimony of a regimental surgeon or asst surgeon because he was a stranger to all of them before and at the time of being treated by any of them the asst surgeons of the Spurrier and J.P. Gatch(?) both wrote to him stating that they had so many cases at the time that they could not remmember all of them expecially those of strangers consequently they did not send any affidavits. Further he states that he wrote to the Tegt Surgeon, G.F.Chittenden of Anderson Ind also Lieutenants Elijah Hawkins and Wm. Waker directing the letters in such a manner that if uncalled for they would be returned also he put stamps in every letter so as to insure answers to them if delivered to the persons they were directed to and that his letters has not been returned and further he has not heard from the surgeon or either one of the Lieutenants he further says that he can not send their affidavits unless he can get them to send he also says that he does not remember any other officers that is now living that was known to his being wounded at the Arkansas post January the 11th 1863 J.H.Spurrier says that himself G.F.Chittenden and J.D.Gatch were all present with the command at Indianapolis Indiana Sinclair says that he wrote to the surgeon and Lieutenant in the years 1879 and 1884 but got no answers."[c]

The Affidavit was signed by Asa Sinclair.
Of interest in connection with Asa's marital status was a document dated 14 October 1899 from the Bureau of Pensions (Joyce's Asa Pension #6)s. In answer to the question, "Are you a married man?" Asa responded "No. She (Mary Ann) got a divorce June 22 1889." Asa listed ten children from his marriage to Mary Ann: Elonzo, [sic] Rosa, Willard, Edward, Webster, Sarah, Franklin, Mary, Ella, Charles. Sadly, Asa stated that he did not know where any of them were.[c]
On 20 October 1922, Mary Ann filed a widow's application, No. 1195773, pension certificate No. A-9-8-26.[b] On 21 December 1938, Asa's widow, Mary Ann, filed a (second?) Declaration for Widow's Pension. This document indicated that Asa had received a $16 to $24 Pension. The Declaration identified Asa's father as Robert Sinclair, whose address after leaving Clinton County, Ohio, was unknown to Mary Ann. Two of their sons were identified as Edward Robert Sinclair and Elonzo [sic] Simon Sinclair of Walsenburg, Colorado. The date of Asa's marriage was given as 5 Mch(?) 1868.[c]
Asa's life ended in a sad and rather bizarre fashion. According to his death certificate, apparently completed by personnel of the National Military Home where Asa appears to have been resident at some time, Asa was born on 19 October 1842 in Clinton County, Ohio. No information as to his parents was entered. Asa's occupation was given as "Old Veteran". The Certificate gave the probable date of death as 5 October 1922, and stated that Asa's body had been found on 13 October 1922. The cause of death was listed as probably a broken neck from an accidental fall contributed to by "Senile debility". No autopsy was performed by coroner H.J. Madison. The Certificate stated that Asa was buried in the National Military Home Cemetery on 13 October 1922, and that the undertaking was by C.Davis Undertaking Company, Leavenworth, Kansas. Next of kin was shown as Asa's wife Mary Ann Sinclair of Leavenworth County, Kansas.[c]
Notes on the back of the death certificate stated:

"Deceased was not in right mind and wandered away from home, he evidently had walked off of a high embankment near the river (near Rock Island Bridge) and broke his neck from the examination, body was in a bad state of decomposition. Nothing to indicate foul play."[c]

The notes were signed H.J.Madison, Coroner. Also noted on the Certificate:

"Wid.Orig 1,195,773. Mary Ann, widow of Asa Sinclair, Co. 'F', 16th Ind. Inf. (CO. F, 16th. Regi. Indiana Volunteer Infantry). Filed by F.W.Hershfield, Leavenworth, Kansas".[c]

Asa's obituary (the name and date of the newspaper are unknown) read as follows:

"FIND BODY OF CIVIL WAR VETERAN NEAR FORT LEAVENWORTH. Had Been Missing Since October 5 - Wandered Away From Doctor's Office. HIS NECK WAS BROKEN."[c]

The obituary related that Asa's body was badly decomposed. It stated further that he was 80 years old, was a resident of Bain City, and was formerly a resident of the National Military Home. His birth date was given as 19 October 1842. The article said that Asa was a Civil War Veteran, having served in F Company, 16th Regiment, Indiana Infantry, and that he left a widow and ten children, none of whom resided in Leavenworth. The article related that Asa was buried in the National Cemetery at Leavenworth, Kansas.[c]
Interestingly, Asa's death certificate lists his birth year as 1842, while one of his Bureau of Pensions documents (Joyce's Asa Pension #7) lists his year of birth, apparently correctly, as 1843.
One of Asa's descendants, Lulu Kranz, has in her possession a faded photograph of Asa, and also a better one of Mary Ann (Curtis) Sinclair. She also has photographs of Asa's tombstone which she took in 1996.[c]

Children of A
SA SINCLAIR and MARY CURTIS are:
  i.   ALONZO SIMON32 SINCLAIR, b. 1868, Indiana220; d. Unknown.
  ii.   ROSA SINCLAIR, b. 1869, Nebraska220; d. Unknown.
  Notes for ROSA SINCLAIR:
Nettie Cosgrove stated in a letter that "Asa had a large family But I can't give their names as I don't know only two daughters Ella & I have forgotten the other ones name as I only met her a few times fifty four yrs ago." [Original punctuation and capitalization.] Does this mean that Asa had but two daughters? It would appear so. (Letter of Nettie Jane Cosgrove Gieseker, Denver, Colorado, to J.E. Stockman dated 14 Jan 1964.)
Further support for this conclusion comes from the 1880 Census Schedule which lists only two daughters--Rosa and Sarah. Was "Ella" then a second name for either Rosa or Sarah? Pending clarification through further research, that assumption will be made. (1880 Fed. Census, Nat'l Archives Pub. No. T9, Roll 391, p. 6.)
