Listed as Hilton/Helton in father's will. In Lancaster and Chesterfield there are three R. or Rebecca Hilton's. One has age 39, one age 33 (both Lancaster) in Chesterfield, one age 23.

Elaine Crespo "I have this Rebecca married to Moses Hilton and have David Hilton married to a Rebecca unknown; David Hilton is son of James Hilton and Patty Brewer; he was born 1797."

Age for Rebecca married to D or David Hilton is closer to what her age should be. Note she would have been 7 years older than Moses Hilton, not impossible.

D Hilton 53 M 1,100 SC
R Hilton 39 F SC
T Hilton 21 F
W Hilton 19M Farmer

Will leave Rebecca attached to Moses (Modie) Hilton until proven otherwise
Note that D Hilton and M. Hilton household are both in the Hickory Head area where many of the Miller's are living
Brasington census does not list household in 1860 but FTM disks have him on page 192 Hickory Head

OSES (MODIE) HILTON:

Data from a Petition, Lancaster Co. State of SC Court to David Williams, Esq. Judge of said Court "The Petition of Nathan G. Faile & his wife, Matilda, respectfully represents that Moses Hilton, late of the county and State aforesaid, departed this life intestate on 15 July 1864. tract of land containing 500 acres more or less adjoining lands of Wes Hilton, John Hilton and others..and leaving surviving him, his wife Harriett, and the following children..Matilda, your petitioner and Richard Hilton, Burrell Hilton, George Hilton, Lilly Hilton, Rachel Hilton, Dunkin Hilton, Emma J. Hilton, Mary Hilton and Lolta Hilton, all of whom are minors under the age of 21 yrs. except your petitioner..also Laura wife of John A. Sowell of Kershaw, SC and Margaret Hilton, the children intestate by his predeceased wife, Rebecca..That the said Harriet Hilton, the widow of said intestate, departed this life intestate on the 16 Aug 1864, before letters of Administration was granted, or any distribution made..

1850 Census Lancaster Co. 175b 655
Helton, M (Moses)            31M      Farmer      SC
Helton, H (Harriette)      32F            SC
Helton, M (Mary)            5F            SC
Helton, M (Matilda)            3F            SC
Helton, R      (William Richard)      2M            SC

Reading between the lines - Was the Mary Helton above actually a child of Moses Hilton? The information from the book does not list her as a child, gives the marriage date of Moses and Harriette as 1847 but she was mentioned in the petition above. Census information gives Mary as born in 1845?

I did not see Moses Hilton in 1860 Lancaster Census.

I also have a John and Harriet listd as children by second wife

OVEL MILLER:
[GeorgeMillerforLottie.FTW]

Note that in the legal paper that was done after Stephen Miller died to take the land he owned in payment of his debt, it was noted that the land was given to him by his father Love Miller
"bound on the north by lands of Heyward Miller, on the West by lands of Catharine Ogburn and on the south by lands of Catharine Ogburn estate and L. D. Ogburn"
Catharine Ogburn and L. D. Ogburn are probably related.

From Helen's notes
Lovell Miller was born to George W. Miller and Catherine Terrell Miller in Lancaster Co., SC He was the fifth child of fifteen. (I have him as 4th child) When his father died in 1850/51, he inherited land in Chesterfield Co. and he lived there as a farmer for the remainder of his life.

In the 1850 Chesterfield Co. Census Lovel is listed as follows:
Lovel Miller 33, M, Farmer, born in SC
Tilda Miller 24, F, born in SC
Pam Miller, 7, F, born in SC (this corresponds somewhat with daughter Jane Miller's age, may be misreading of Census) from p. 158, 913. Note Jackson Miller, Allen Eubanks, and Ogburn families were living close by

His first wife Matilda died sometime after the birth of last child (1860) but the date or place of burial is unknown.

During the Civil War, Lovel Miller served as a private in Co. K, 4SC State Troops for six months in 1863. He was discharged on December 17, 1863 on account of physical disability. It would appear that his wife Matilda was deceased and we can only wonder at the hardships this middle aged man must have endured during this period.

On May 19, 1866, Lovel remarried Henrietta Guild Ogburn, a widow with 10 children by her first marriage to Rev. Hugh Ogburn. The Ogburn family were neighbors to the Millers in Lancaster/Chesterfield so it is assumed that Lovel and Henrietta had previously known each other. Following censuses show that they had very large households for the next twenty years. Sometimes their various children lived nearby with Ogburn relatives. Henrietta's occupation was listed as a school teacher and Lovel owned a small farm.

Although there were no children born to Henrietta and Lovel, two of their children married each other. Stephen Franklin Miller married Henrietta Josephine Ogburn and Lucy Ann Miller married Henry Bascom Ogburn.

Although this family does not appear to have had land or wealth during the Reconstruction period, Lovel was respected and trusted in the community. There are documents that show that he was frequently entrusted to handle the financial affairs of thers. We also know that his wife Henrietta was very religious and caring; she nursed Confederate soldiers in Charleston during the Civil WAr.

When Lovell died in 1885, his estate was valued at less that $100.00. They are buried at White Plains Baptist.

ATIDA PHILLIPS:

Notes for HENRIETTA JOSEPHINE GUILD:
[GeorgeMillerforLottie.FTW]

This name was given to me by Clara Funderburk. Has not been verified. She said she was buried at Five Forks but I did not find grave marker. She was listed as a school teacher in the 1870 Census. Clara's notes say she was buried at Five Forks. Clara's notes -Maiden name of Giles

Helen's notes - 1900 census has her 1900 living next door to Stephen and Henrietta Josephine (daughter) with the George Ogburn family as a 75 year old widow

"Henrietta was born to Samuel Guild and his wife Mary Ann Michau [See family bible] in Williamsburg, SC. This was a well-to-do family. She married a Methodist preacher on 3/12/1840, Hugh Edward Ogburn, and they had 10 children" [I have seen some internet genealogies that appear to be of this Micheau family but am not satisfied that they connect]

In Jan. 1860 Henrietta Guild Ogburn was pregnant with her 10th child when her husband died. She delivered a son in June, 1860. During the Civil War she and her children lived with her parents in Williamsburg Co.

On 5/19/1866 she remarried to Lovel Miller and moved to Chesterfield Co. with her children. The 1870 Chesterfield shows nine people living in the Lovell Miller household.

Two of her Ogburn children married Millers who were related (children) of Lovell. After Lovell Miller died 3/6/1885, Henrietta lived with relatives until her death on 1/16/1902.

From the Gardner Book
"On one of my trips to Monroe, NC, I met one of the most charming ladies who told me a story of Henrietta Guild Ogburn (Miller) (wife of Rev. Hugh Edward Ogburn and a daughter of Samuel Guild and Mary Ann Michau)

She(Henrietta) was a young widow at the time. She said that when Sherman's federal troops came by Samuel Guild's home in Williamsburg Co, SC, the family quickly hid everthing they could, but Henrietta forgot to take off a beautiful ring she was wearing. She was in the yard by the well when a Yankee soldier approached her and said, "Give me that ring or I'll throw you in the well". Henrietta answered "Well throw me in the well, but I'll take the ring with me". A non-com came up and ordered the solder to let her alone and then put a guard on the house to protect the family and property."
