From Jan to April 1863, Both of the Clarks were guarding the bridge over Arnold's Creek on Doddridge County, Virginia.
On February 6, 1865, he died of smallpox in Piedmont, West Virginia. All of his personal effects were burned to avoid contagion on February 7, 1865. Any and all records of his passing were destroyed in a county court house fire later in the 1860's or early 1870's.
