Several members of the family have given us great service through their research and documentation of our relatives. I have probably missed a few major contributors but I want to at least recognize those that I know have spent so much time for the benefit of all of us.
In April of 1975 Agnes Streit Mc Cabe began an effort to collect information about her ancestors and their descendents. During 1975 she visited the National Archives in Washington, D.C and found customs list of passengers of the ship that brought the Streit's to America. She wrote to the Belgium Museum for a picture of the ship which she received in September of 1975. For fifteen years she corresponded with relatives and learned much about the family. She researched in Germany as well as in the United States. Thanks to her efforts, our roots have been traced back over 200 years to 1770.
During the 1980's Linda Weirich Martin and Bob Weirich compiled information on Anna Marie "Emma" Streit and Mathias "Matt" Weirich and their descendents which they published as a Weirich family history.
Also during the 1980's Joseph and Lorna Engel Streit compiled information on the John Peter "Hanus" Streit and Anna Hilger clan. In collaboration with Agnes Streit Mc Cabe they also researched back into the German records.
Joseph Cornier and Marion Streit Cornier documented a portion of the Mathias Streit and Anna Maria Tossing clan on giant blueprint paper. Mary and Harvey Streit have spent a significant amount of time updating and greatly expanding the information of the Mathias branch of the family for this publication.
In September 1997 Carol Ranschau Rehder created a book that was video taped by Don Baatz documenting the Michael Baatz and Appolonia "Abbie" Streit clan. It contains pictures of each person, where they work and some of the story of the Michael and Abby Baatz branch.
Around 1990 Gerald Streit acquired copies of the records of Agnes and entered them into a computer. He has graduaully added to the data through acquisition of the works of those listed here and through others. He presents it in its current form.
The data in this document is believed to be true and accurate. However the presenter's experience with other such documents requires that a disclaimer be issued. The data has, for the most part, been gathered from the knowledge of various family members. Most data has not been verified against other sources such as birth or death records.
Where an effort was made to verify data, the results were sometimes confusing. An example of this would be Johann "Peter" Streit wife's maiden name. Each of the children's marriage licenses shows a different maiden name for Anna Maria. None of them seems to be correct.
This document is being printed following a family reunion of about 400 of us which took place on June 27, 1999 at Cool Acres in Aurora, Illinois. The printing and binding have been done by cousins Jim and Sheryl Mc Cabe, owners, The Ink Well, Columbus, OH.
This material is also being submitted to the Family Tree Maker "World Family Tree" project which means that the data will be available from Family Tree Maker in a few months on CD ROM. A copy will also be given to the Aurora Public Library in Aurora, IL.
As of August 3, 1999 this document contains 2,758 people who are descendants or spouses of descendants of Peter and Anna. 2,480 of these people are still living.
The day this document is printed, it will be out of date. Children are born, people die, new relatives are found, this is probably the biggest reason that documents like this do not get printed. My thanks to all who have made large and small contributions to this document. You are encouraged to send updates/additions to this information to:
