The Van Wieren homestead had the border marker right at it's front door. His occupation was listed on his death record as a farmer. Henry (Hendrick) Van Wieren his grandson remembers his grandfather as having a long gray beard. Historical and business compendium of Ottawa County, Michigan Vol. 1, Lists 1892-1893 as Hendrick Van Wieren's occupation: Farmer, section 10. Allendale Township, Hendrick and Johanna (his wife) settled in Allendale and later moved to Holland. He was a good speaker and preached at the church in Eastmanville, MI. He was not an ordained minister. Henry thought he was mostly a carpenter. When Hendrick and Johanna moved to Holland they lived with their son Gerrit John and Hendrikje (Lambers) at 447 Central Ave. Hendrick and Johanna's son Ralph was the first to come to America. Ralph settled in Cadillac, MI. Hendrick and Johanna with their unmarried son Gerrit James came to America somewhere between 1877-1885. Their daughter Adrianna Angeline Van Wieren remembers that her parents came to America on a cattle boat - less expensive.
