Pearl Watters Smith, 82, of Baxter Street, Oneida, passed away Wednesday morning, August 13, at her home.
She was the daughter of the late Newton Watters and the late Katie Crabtree Watters and was also preceded in death by her husband, Fred Lee Smith, Sr.; one sister Artie Watters; and one brother Hillery Watters.
She was a member of Sapphire Chapter, Order of Easter Star #259; a life member of the Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Oneida.
She is survived by one son, Judge Fred Lee Smith, Jr. of Mountain City; four sister: Mrs. Maude Marcum, Mrs. Virgie Sexton, Mrs. Maxine Jeffers and Mrs. Kathryn Beets, all of Oneida; one brother, Arthur "Bud" Watters of Oneida; one granddaughter, Gaylia Leigh Smith of Johnson City; several nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, August 16, at 2 P.M. at First Baptist Church in Oneida, with Richard Morehouse and Rev. Philip Kazee officiating. Burial followed in Hazel Valley Cemetery.
Honorary Pallbearers were Dr. Milford Thompson, Don Lambert, Robert Wright, Sr. James Baker, J. T. Butler, Ben Draught, Arley Lay, George Roark, Vernon West, and Rev. Leland Thomas.
Active Pallbearers were: James Cotton, Wallace Marcum, Charles Marcum, Homer Jeffers, Lester Litton, James Herman Bilbrey, Robert Wight, Jr. and Lynn Williamson.

MRS. BERTHA PHILLIPS STEPHENS, 89, of the Pentecost community, passed away Friday, December 21, 1984 at the Scott County Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Elizabeth Keeton Phillips and a member of the Pentecost Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Lemuel Stephens; four sons, Edward, Harold, Luther, and Herbert Stephens; and two brothers, Arthur and Herstle Phillips.

Mrs. Stephens is survived by three sons, Royce C. Stephens and Thomas L. Stephens, both of Knoxville, and Dorsey C. Stephens of LaFollette; four daughters, Mable Smith and Helen Harness of Oneida, Lucille Burley of Knoxville and Wilda Roark of Hopkinsville, Ky.; one brother, Gerstel Phillips of New River; one sister, Mittie Strunk of Oneida, 19 grandchildren, several great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a number of friends.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, December 24, at I p.m. at the Pentecost Baptist Church with Rev. James 0. Laxton officiating. Music was provided by the Pentecost Baptist Choir. Interment was in the Jim Carson Cemetery.

Scott County Funeral Home in Oneida was in charge of arrangements.
