Notes for Lawrence Patrick Connolly I:
Lawrence Patrick Connolly I was married but his wife (who had red hair) died in Ireland. He survived the cholera epidemic in Ireland and then later he and his son Lawrence II and daughters Bridget and Catherine set sail for America in approximately 1849. Bridget died on the voyage and was buried at sea.
Catherine, age 12, and Lawrence II came to America with their father but we have little information about them when they first arrived.

His daughter, Mary, preceded him in going to America. After her arrival she worked and earned money to pay passage for her father, brother and sisters to come to America.

Their departure for America was likely prompted by the disastrous potato famine in Ireland from 1845-1850. During this time, it is estimated that 1.6 million Irish emigrated in order to survive, the majority going to America. The Irish population at that time was reduced by 2 million due to emigration and death.

In the 1850 census he is living alone in Hollywood, MN. He lives next door to Thomas O'Gara - a future son in law (marries Catherine Connolly). The value of his real estate is listed at $400, his personal estate is valued at $10.

In the 1870 census he is listed as living with his son Lawrence and his family.

Lawrence homesteaded on 160 acres in Hollywood. 80acres of that original homestead is owned today by a granddaughter of Rose Connolly Burns.
