TABUSINTAC, ALNWICK PARISH, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, NEW BRUNSWICK
To begin a discussion of the genealogies of the Tabusintac families, it seems fitting to start with
Charlotte Taylor, her children and grandchildren. It is not my intention to discuss her fascinating
history as Mary Lynn Smith has brilliantly done so on her web site listed below. There are a fair
number of works relating to these families, and I have gathered what basic information I can, and
compiled it below. With the next generations, relationships become highly complex, but my
compilation may, at least, offer a beginning to those who are interested, but new, to those
complexities. As a result, not all that could be written is written, that is for another time. For
example, in my own family, John Murray and his sisters have descendants whose lines
interweave with those mentioned below far beyond the hints given. The story of the Murrays of
Tabusintac and of Bedeque is a separate story, and the Rev. H. Arthur Murray has provided an
extensive basis in his work.
There is some question of the spelling of surnames. For example, whether William Urquhart,
s/o the Rev. John and Mary (McIntyre) Urquhart, married Margaret Milligan or Milliken. In the
1861 census, and Andrew Milligan, b. ca. 1777, appears; possibly Margaret's brother (margaret
was b. about the same time.) However, census returns are very unreliable; for example "Robison"
for Robertson. There is the question of Johnstone versus Johnston. Since I suspect that these
are members of the famous border clan, I generally use Johnstone.
PERSONS:
The following list of persons is partially based on Campbell's survey of 1804, and partially on
my memory. It is meant to be a start at a collection of the initial ancestors of some Tabusintac
families. It is incomplete, in that some persons are not included; and incorrect in that some of
those persons soon sold out and left Tabusintac, leaving no descendants. Even so, it is a start. In
the cases of Capt. John Blake, Lt. William Wishart, Pvt. Duncan Robertson and Sgt. Philip
Hierlihy, their children are indicated below.
That many of the families in Tabusintac are Scottish may not be entirely accidental either.
William Davidson, in attempting to settle the Miramichi before 1776, may have attempted to
recruit his compatriots, and a feeling of commonality may have drawn others after 1783. These
Scots come from diverse areas in Scotland, so it was not a case of relationship. In the upheaval
of the times, the suggestion of one Scot to another that this was a good place to settle would
have had more weight than the suggestion of someone else. I sense a gathering that transcends
mere happenstance, but the mysteries of that gathering have not yet been revealed.

St. John (Prince Edward Island), during the American Revolution." Callbeck's militia unit on
PEI was integrated into Lt. Col. Timothy Hierlihy's Independents, which may explain why Philip
Hierlihy went to the Miramichi. Daniel Menton (or Minton) was also of the PoWAR, and it may
be of interest to learn why he came to the Loggieville area.

MURDOCH McLEOD m. 9JUL1808 MARY MURRAY, possibly a d/o John and Liza (Chambers)
Murray. The Rev. James Lawson speculates, in a letter dated 21DEC1988, writing:
I was looking at two PANB microfilms listed in the Northumberland Cty. genealogical
guide, F-1422 and F-1423, misc. births, deaths and marriages copied from file cards
which seem to have been in a private collection at one time.
This particular entry was of note:
McLeod, Murdoch Min. Sess. 1808
Marriage Certificate, Northumberland, July 9th, 1808.
I hereby certify that Murdoch McLeod and Mary Murray,
bothe of the Parish of Alnwick, were married by me-
Special Licence having been obtained from his Honor

P. Campbell
James Lawson refers to a family of James (b. ca. 1762) and Janet (b. ca. 1765) McLeod, and

Page 8
of William (b. ca. 1767) and Christina (b. ca. 1769) McLeod; brothers who emigrated from
Assynt Parish, Sutherlandshire, Scotland in 1803. He suggests that Mary Murray, since John
Murray, Jr.'s family was the only Murray family in Tabusintac that early, was his eldest
daughter, although there is some conflict with John Murray's known daughter, Ann. John
Murray, in the 1798 census of Prince Edward Island, had a daughter under 16 years of age.
Ann Murray d. 1865, and her headstone gives her age at death as 72 years; i.e., b. ca. 1793.
This would make it seem that John only had one daughter in 1798, and this was Ann. The
Mary Murray who m. 1808 Murdoch McLeod was possibly b. anytime between 1788 and 1792.
It would seem that James' guess that she was John's daughter is quite likely. James Lawson's
father-in-law, the Rev. H. Arthur Murray, does not include Mary (Murray) McLeod as John
Murray, Jr.'s daughter in his book on that family, and since James wrote an extensive and
illuminating preface to that work, this discovery was probably made too late to include.

This page was designed by Irene Doyle for Gloucester GenWeb Apr/1998.)
Dec. 8/1846 Robert Tobin, the well known ferryman at the Bathurst ferry, was
unfortunately drowned a short time since. It appears that while the deceased was
taking across some oxen, they became restive, when the scow took in a considerable
quantity of water, and being unable to manage them, he jumped overboard. It was
very boisterous at the time, and being a cripple, he failed in reaching the shore and
perished.
JOEL SPENCER TURNER, sold his lot and left.
WILLIAM TURNER, sold to John Murray.
Rev. JOHN URQUHART b. possibly in or near Cromarty or Dingwall, Scotland ca. 1740-5, d.

MARY McINTYRE (b. Warren, ME ca. 1756-60, bur. Moorefields Cem.), d/o Capt. John
McIntyre. May have graduated from King's College, Aberdeen, Scotland with a Master of Arts
in 1769. Preached under the Presbyterian Synod, Salem, MA JUN1775. Warren, Maine for ten
years; in the 1790 census. About 1800, to PEI, including Bedeque, centred at Princetown.
1802 to Miramichi, built a church at Moorefields (burnt in the fire of 1825.)
Lt. ALEXANDER WISHART (Although Alexander, and his brother, William, are considered pre-
Loyalists, having come to the Miramichi about 1775, they were commissioned as naval
lieutenants during the Revolution in Quebec in 1779 by Gen. Haldimand. Thus they were
residents of America who took up arms on the British side, and could also be considered
Loyalists.)

(b. Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Scotland, d. Tabusintac, Alnwick Parish, Northumberland Co., NB

There is some question as to whether Duncan was in the Black Watch. An act of the New
Brunswick Legislature in the 1820's provided for the soldiers, and their widows, of the
American Revolution. Included, in 1840, was an Elizabeth, widow of Duncan Robertson,
private in the 42nd Regiment.
At a web site at:
http://www.angelfire.com/realm/stevenstymiest/stymiest/d0002/g0000063.html#I3307
by Steven Stymiest, is a note on Catherine Robertson's baptism and marriage to John
MacCallum which reads:
Note - witnesses of their marriage William McCollam & James McCollam. Birth recorded is
from Tracadie register. Catherine Robertsson, born 24-09-1806, baptised 04-11-1806, the
daughter of Dunlan Robersson and Elizabeth Williamson, godfather, Jacques Breau,
godmother, Julie Savoie.
An unusual feature of these notes is that Elizabeth's maiden name is given as "Williamson",
confirming that some version of this, or Williams or Willisams, derived from her father, was
initially the last-name by which she was known. Also unusual was the Acadian godparents,
first suggesting a closer empathy between the English and French of the area than was
common for the time; and also that the baptism may have been Roman Catholic.

MOSES AUSTIN
(b.
Massachusetts? ca. 1778? or ca. 1788?.) (On 4AUG1813, a Moses Austin petitioned for
land in Tabusintac. He was 33 years old, had been in NB for 13 years, was single at the
time. He had been in the City of Quebec's "City Militia", in Fredericton, and in the
Northumberland Co. militia. It is possible he was working for Benjamin Stymiest.)
At Canada>Quebec City>General board, Ancestry.com: David A. Austin writes
13SEP2000
Moses Austin was born 25 Dec 1778, I know not where. He and his wife Sarah Beman

Page 13
were in Quebec City in the early 1800's. He was an Innkeeper and a shoemaker according
to microfilms of the original church records at the centre d'archives de la capitale 1210
avenue du Seminaire, Sainte-Foy, Quebec, Canada. Moses and Sarah had three children
two girls , who died shortly after birth. Their names were Anne and Lucy. A son Samuel
Beman Austin was born 11 Nov 1809 in Quebec City. Samuel Beman died in minneapolis
mn i 1891. Moses wife Sarah returned to Hampton , Washington County NY and lived with
her son Samuel B. in Hampton in the 1850-60 time frame. do not, however think that
Moses returned to the USA. Request help finding out if Moses died in Quebec City.
Thanks

Mary Austin, at various message boards, suggests that `Elinor' was a `Robinson' (referring
to several of their children's death records), and that Moses was actually b. in
Massachusetts. It seems very likely that this Moses in Maine is the same Austin who
married a d/o Duncan Robertson.
Another probable son of Moses Austin was Horace Austin of the Doaktown-Ludlow are
of Blissfield Parish, Northumberland Co., NB. According to the 1851 and 1901 census (as
reported by Mary Austin) returns, this Horace was b. Alnwick Parish, Northumberland Co.,
NB 9MAR1820, was a farmer in 1851, but a miller (sawmill?) in 1901.
A daughter would appear to be: Charlotte Austin b. ca. 1821. m. Ludlow Parish,
Northumberland Co., NB 15SEP1836 John Milven Thomson (witnesses: Thomas A.
McGregor and Isia Ditmas Rooss.)

Dave Hierlihy wrote (e-mail 23AUG2002):
Received the following from Cheryl.
I think that you're right on the money, and if you take a look at the "naming pattern"
everything seems to essentially fit. (Philip- fathers father, Margaret- mothers mother,
Philip 2nd - 1st born Philip probably died so name of first son reverts back to fathers
father, Charlotte- fathers mother, William- mothers mother etc.
Gramps was pretty methodical when it came to making lists. He had a tendency to
document everything, and although he might have made a few small mistakes, I think
that overall his listing of the Hierlihy children is probably correct. Also, he made
several references to there being a
total
of 16 children in all. According to my mother,
"If Grampy said there was 16 children, then believe it. There was 16 children!" Also, all
the other Palmer information contained in his journal has been absolutely correct.
So there you have it - Chery'ls view on things.

I have some data which may help solve the Helen HIERLIHY/MURRAY question.
Never thought of this bit of data until a few days ago. At the same time, it may lend
itself to some further discussion/confusion.
George Jonathan Palmer, born Aug 8 1860. From his journal.......
HIs father was Arthur Boyle Palmer, born Oct 22 1829, his mother Eleanor Hierlihy
Palmer born June 12 1831. Eleanor's parents are James William HIERLIHY and
Louisa URQUHART. In his journal, he records the children of this union. Philip,
Margaret U., Philip 2nd, Charlotte M., William U., James W., Eleanor, (His Mother),

Page 17
Louise, Premelia U., Jane MCrae, Honnor G., Annie B., Maria P., James 2nd., Lewis
U., and an infant girl, 16 in all.
As I see it, this would be quite accurate since it is closer to the time of the events. It
does however open a few doors for discussion. i.e., I have a Catherine who married a
Shea, which I think may be Carl Stymiest descendant. I also have Lewis as the child
of Philip Hierlihy and Mary Wasson. It could be, Lewis was staying with Philip & Mary.
I also have Helen, who married into the Murray line. This data may also lend itself to
solving the recent question, was there a (Helen HIERLIHY from this family who
married John Murray)

with Mary Nelligan being the d/o Patrick and Mary Honora (Kennedy) Nelligan. This
indicates a Hierlihy family on PEI not directly connected to those in Tabusintac or
