NANCY AVERY’S UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA NOTES
12SEP2002-20JAN2003
Information gathered by Nancy Avery, Moncton,
New Brunswick
Compiled by Thomas A. Murray
In 1925, various
churches of the Presbyterian, Methodist and Baptist churches amalgamated into
the United Church of Canada. These three denominations were represented in
Tabusintac, and nearby areas. The result is that many records of all three
churches are in the United Church archives, in Sackville, NB. Nancy Avery has
been examining these archival records, and providing interesting extractions
from them. This is an activity I most heartily approve of, as one can never do
wrong by going to primary sources. Disseminating the results is an act of
altruism. There is a difficulty however.
My hotmail e-mail
address is constantly in danger of being overloaded. I simply cannot keep up
with all of the material. To relieve the ‘pressure’ I began copying Nancy’s
material, and pasting it into one file. The result is difficult to search for
pertinent information. I need to organize the material into a sort of ‘index’.
The following is that attempt.
Part of the purpose of
this work (indeed the main purpose) is to provide a resource in which the
information derived from the primary source is as accurate as possible. This is
impossible as Nancy Avery’s transcriptions necessarily make what I am working
from a secondary source, and secondary sources always contain errors. This work
as a third (even fourth) level transcription will, necessarily, also contain
errors, misunderstandings, etc. I am attempting, however, to maintain as much
accuracy as possible. This limits the degree to which I might make conclusions
or assumptions. Conclusions should only be made when there is sufficient
evidence to make them very close to certitude, if then. Assumptions should
never be made within the body of this work.
Consider the two
entries:
Janet McLeod Johnstone
d/o James and Mary Ann (Blake) Johnstone b. 19JUL1853, bpt. 10OCT1853
and:
Janet Johnston, of
Chatham, NB and Saint John, NB, d/o James Johnston of Tabusintac, sister of
Andrew Johnston of Chatham NB, b. ca. 1854, d. Saint John, NB 28 or 29 MAR1876
aet. 22 years. “Shocking accident: At St. John on the 28 (or 29th blob of ink)
ult, JANET JOHNSTON, belonging to Chatham, was instantaneously killed by
falling from a balcony in the rear of Mr. H. N. Levy's residence, to the
ground, a distance of 14 feet. She was in the act of hanging clothes on a
pulley line, when the line suddenly parted as she leaned forward, precipitating
her into the yard below. Deceased was a daughter of the late JAMES JOHNSTON of
Tabusintac. Her brother , Mr. ANDREW JOHNSTON, on receiving the melancholy tidings,
left Chatham to bring on the remains for interment at Chatham. Deceased was 22
years of age.” (Newcastle, Union Advocate, 5APR1876.)
then back refer to:
James Johnston m. Mary
Ann Blake. (Nancy Avery reports them as buried in Riverside Cem., Tabusintac,
“close to the vault”.
19NOV2002, Nancy Avery wrote:
I was speaking with Shirley Murray of
Tabusintac not long ago to clarify a few points with her . . . she is a walking
history book of the Murray family, and is also "up" on many other
Tabu families. She had an interesting comment about James Johnston (1796) and
how he met his wife, Mary Ann Blake, ( granddaughter of Charlotte Taylor).
Shirley claimed that Emily Fraser told her this . . .
"James Johnston had a farm up river
where the Buchanan's live. He travelled by boat, and stopped one day at the
Campbell house across the river (apparently not too far from the present day
site of the main bridge.) This is where he met Mary Ann Blake, who was a
servant in the Campbell household." James and Mary Ann married and had a
large family.
Jane Johnston d/o James and Mary Ann
(Blake) Johnston b. 10DEC1833, bpt. 15MAR1835
John Johnston s/o James and Mary Ann
(Blake) Johnston b. 12APR1835, bpt. 31MAY1835. (this child only lived a few
months...he died July 7, 1836 , according to Judith Purdy, a descendent)
son of James and Mary
Ann (Blake) Johnston b. 31JAN1836, bpt. 19FEB1837
John Johnston s/o James
and Mary Ann (Blake) Johnston b. 8JAN1839, bpt. 13JAN
Andrew McNair Johnston
s/o James and Mary Ann (Blake) Johnston b. 26(???)1850, bpt. (2?)(???)1851; by
the Rev. Wm Stewart of Chatham
Janet McLeod Johnstone
d/o James and Mary Ann (Blake) Johnstone b. 19JUL1853, bpt. 10OCT1853
The Janet McLeod Johnston b. 19JUL1853 with a father, James, and a
brother, Andrew McNair Johnston, would almost certainly be the same Janet
Johnston b. ca. 1854 with a father, James, and a brother, Andrew, who came to a
untimely end in 1876. This is certainly the conclusion I would (and will) reach
in a compilation on the family; but, the key word here is ALMOST. This is still
in the nature of an assumption. If the mother had been named, there would be a
greater degree of certitude, and I would combine the two Janet’s into one person.
Here is the danger! Should I do so, and be wrong (by some strange quirk there
being another James Johnston with children, Andrew and Janet) my assumption
would be accepted as factual, and very difficult to disprove.
Neither is it enough
that some person with additional information state that the two Janet Johnstons
are the same person, and offer a summary of the family with other pertinent
data. This would be to stray from the purpose of this work, to bring together
information, into compilation. In a work on the Johnston family, I am free to
make the connection; but here, I am restricted to attempting to just present
the known facts as closely as possible.
Hence, what may seem to
be obviously the same person may be entered more than once, conclusions,
assumptions or even wild theories to be entertained elsewhere. Even so, errors
are inevitable. Consider the entry:
William Edmund McInzie
m. Mary _____ (Note, this could also be William Edmund m. Mary McInzie. See
William Edmonds.)
David McInzie s/o William
Edmund and Mary McInzie bpt. Tabusintac 2JAN1848
which is derived from Nancy’s note:
William Edmund and Mary McInzie(sic) son b. 1847, bapt 2 Jan,
1848, n. DAVID
this I read as William Edmund and Mary (_____) McInzie. A later
note by Nancy reads:
- Thomas, born June 19, 1859 to William EDMONDS and
Mary McKensie ( sic) of Tabusintac. Baptised on March 12, 1871.
- Mary, born ______, 1861
- Elizabeth , born Sept 27 , 1862
- John , born Aug 24 or 29 , 1864
Obviously, I have erred, and it should be William and Mary
(McKenzie) Edmonds. I will be correcting this shortly; but it illustrates how
errors can occur.
Where I seem to be
missing obvious connections I am simply being obstinately conservative, and where
I make an error, I can only extend my most sincere, “Whoops!” For example:
J. R. Price, witness
marriage Daniel and Bessie (Robertson) McCullam, 23JUL1902
[Note: in 1902-3 there
appear to have been three Jacobs: Jacob, Sr., Jacob, Jr (from Backwoods) and
Jacob B. (from Red Pine Island.)]
Jacob Price b. PEI ca.

Jacob Price received

1901"
Jacob Price, received

Jacob Price, Sr. member
Methodist Church 1902-3 (from Backwoods)
Jacob Price, Jr. m. Jane
____, members Methodist Church 1902-3 (from Backwoods)
Jacob B. Price b. Price
Settlement ca. 1864, d. (23 or 28)NOV1910 aet. 46 years, bur. Tabusintac;
"Heavy cold developing into pneumonia". (Mrs.?) J. B. Price,
"Received by Chairman of District in Autumn of 1901" (away.) Mrs.
Jacob B. Price, member Methodist Church 1902-3 (from Red Pine Island)
gives seven possible entries for Jacob Price. The membership rolls
of the Methodist Church for 1902-3 suggest that there are at least three
Jacobs, as they list a Jacob, Sr. and Jacob, Jr. from Backwoods; and at the
same time, a Mrs. Jacob B. Price from Red Pine Island. Of the two entries:
Jacob Price received
into Methodist Church, "Received by Chairman of District in Autumn of
1901"
Jacob Price, received
into Methodist Church "Rec'd July 20th" 1902? (from Backwoods)
either could be Jacob, Jr. or Jacob, Sr., but I have no way of
telling which is which; so they are entered separately. Even though I can be
fairly certain one is Jacob, Sr. and the other most likely Jacob, Jr., without
some way of distinguishing between them, they become ‘duplicated’ entries in
that the same person is entered twice. Also, the designations, “Sr.” and “Jr.”
simply mean “elder” and “younger”; not necessarily “father” and “son’. They
could as easily be uncle and nephew.
Another difficulty is
the spelling of names, especially surnames. Varieties are bewildering, and even
today two branches of the same family may use different versions. As a rule, I
attempt to transcribe the names as given. Their are difficulties, for example:
should VANADESTINE be reduced to Van Adestine, VanAdestine, Vanadestine or Van
adestine? I definitely wish to avoid the debate as to whether it should be
McLean, Mclean, Maclean or MacLean. Again, I am trying to replicate the
information in the source as closely as possible. Where feasible, I attempt to
use the most probable spelling in headings, etc.; but hope to be forgiven if I
do not hit upon what is felt to be the most æsthetic version.
In spite of the
foregoing, I cannot restrain myself from allowing some correlations which (by
the stated principles) I really should not make, or appending comments that
really should not be included. Consider Elsie MacLeod’s story on Howard Joseph
Savoy s/o Frank and Annie Savoy. It seems worthwhile of preservation. I also
fall prey to the desire to make some speculations as ‘hints’ or observations.
Sometimes, I am able to restrain myself. Consider, (Velinda?) Jane McCullam
Robertson d/o Wm C. and Sarah Robertson of Tabusintac. I am pretty sure the
name should be Belinda, and it has been stated as such. Yet I feel compelled,
without more sureties, to allow the entry to stand without comment. (Well,
actually I just did comment didn’t I?)
Another factor is
amending spelling or punctuation errors. As ‘editor’ I feel obliged to make
some of the more obvious corrections (generally excluding names), but I do
attempt to check my fervour. Most importantly are some of the newspaper
extractions. Rarely I find something so obviously incorrect that I cannot feel
that it was in the original. If there is any doubt (as in the use of
Americanisms), I generally leave it as it is.
The terms, “Mr.” and
“Esquire” had specific connotations in the 19th century. With “esquire”, even
today, there are certain conventions of usage. It is not a title, but
approaches something like a title. More specifically, it refers to someone who
is worthy of honours (knighthood especially), and it is assumed that these will
be eventually bestowed. It is courteous to refer to such a person as esquire,
but presumptuous for one to assume the designation. As a rule, I leave the term
out; not because the individual involved is undeserving of it, but because
newspapers of the period tend to overuse it. (Also, because I am a reactionary
prig.)
Nancy Avery, as well as
extractions from the United Church archives, sometimes transcribes newspaper
notices, headstone inscriptions, or results from other sources. These are
included as best as is possible in the following. If someone troubles to
replicate primary sources and pass them on, they should not be ignored.
Rather than transcribe
Nancy’s notes, I have adopted a format in which the information, but not
necessarily wording, order, punctuation, etc. is transcribed. This is to allow
a consistency of style where individuals are noted, and their children listed
below them by indentations. Those indentations will probably be lost if I send
this by e-mail. Each child is also included beneath the mother (when her maiden
name is known) and also listed separately. I hope this will ease
cross-referencing to some degree.
Sometimes a baptism
appears to have been entered more than once in separate records. Why this is so
is not wholly clear. Presumably, a record would be kept for each church, and
possibly a second register for the Methodist circuit, or (at the formation of
the United Church) records were gathered and compiled for a specific area.
When Nancy has some
additional comment of her own, or from the consulted record, I generally
include these in parentheses ( ); while my own comments are generally in
brackets [ ].
SOME OF NANCY AVERY’S COMMENTS:
12SEP2002
Today I spent a few hours at the United Church archives in
Sackville, NB, looking for things that, unfortunately, did not show up.
However, I decided to copy down some familiar names being researched by Tab-Mir
subscribers, since many of you live outside of NB, and would not have easy
access to this ...
This archives holds the records for the *Presbyterian* Church from
its inception in Tabusintac in the mid 1830's until church union in 1925. After
that, the records are *United* Church only.
Whoever microfilmed these records from Tabu, must have been having
a bad day, because very little is in chronological order, so you will see
events from the late 1800's long before the 1830's.
9SEP2002
Recently, I was reviewing a few microfilms of the 'Chatham
Gleaner'. One tape was in the first couple of years of the 1850's, and the
other was approx 1859- 1861. Whenever mention was made of a marriage or death in
Tabusintac, or the Burnt Church area, (or names familiar to those communities)
I copied the info down.
25SEP2002
Well, folks, went searching reams of my old notes and came up with
some things that I found in archived microfilms last year, including the following
about 'Rev. Simon Fraser'. (forgot I had this stuff.) But first, leading up to
that, the 'Chatham Gleaner' had this:
Feb 19, 1833
We are requested to intimate to the
inhabitants of Tabusintac, Bay du Vin and Black River that the Directors of the
Glasgow North American Society have granted £50 Sterling annually for 5 years,
to assist them in supporting a Minister, and they hope soon to send them an
able Clergyman of the Church of Scotland, having the Gaelic Language. It is
hoped these settlements will duly appreciate this boon.
(For those who are unaware, the minister
was required to be bilingual, ie, he had to speak both English and Gaelic,
because many of the inhabitants of these communities, including Tabusintac,
could speak only Gaelic.)
Then there was.... in the "Miramichi Gazette":
Wednesday, 14 Jan, 1835
This day a "prorenate" meeting
of the Presbytery of New Brunswick, was held in St James Church, Newcastle, for
the purpose of taking upon trials, with a view to his ordination, the Rev.
SIMON FRASER, lately appointed by the North American Colonial Society to the
united charges of Alnwick and Glenelg . . . (and it goes on and on) . . . his
ordination to take place in St Andrews Church, Chatham, on Friday the 16th,
inst . . . (more followed, then) . . . Mr. Fraser is the 9th ordained clergyman
now in the province, in connection with the established Church of Scotland. . .
. the Presbyterians of Alnwick and Glenelg owe a debt of gratitude for having
sent out to them such an able and promising Minister of the New Testament.
And finally:
Dec 15, 1835
Tabusintac and Burnt Church
On the 3rd inst, a deputation of the
ladies of the settlements of Tabusintac and Burnt Church, waited upon their
pastor, the Rev. Simon Fraser, A.M., and presented him with a handsome and
richly ornamented superfine Geneva pulpit Gown, in testimony of the high regard
and affection which they have for him . . . . (and so on.)
So, guess this proves that the date of Rev. Fraser’s arrival in
Tabusintac must have been at the beginning of 1835, and not in 1837, as stated
in the " History of Tabusintac".
[Note: John Garner wrote
(7OCT2002):
For what it’s worth, the book “Black
River and Its First Settlers” indicates that Rev. Simon Fraser arrived in 1834.
The initial meeting where parishioners subscribed to fund St. Stephen’s church
was held 10 Nov 1834 and Rev. Fraser was in attendance. One assumes that there
were earlier meetings before a general one would have been called.
The sharing of the minister between St. Andrews and St. Stephen churches
suggests that there was a great deal more communication across the river than
is often suggested. Certainly, Rev. Fraser was directed to split his time
between the two churches. For example the ladies of Miramichi, Tabusintac, Bay
du Vin and Black River canvassed their districts to present the Rev. with a
Pulpit Gown. Rev Fraser’s last sermon in St. Stephens was 12 Apr 1840, St
David’s in Burnt Church on 14 March 1840 and St Andrews in Tabusintac on 8
March 1840.]
28SEP2002
Still searching for info on ancestors. found none of mine, but
perhaps a few that will be of benefit to some of you. All of the following
appeared in the 'UNION ADVOCATE', Newcastle, NB. It was published weekly, every
Wednesday. I will put the date the article appeared. [I have included those
excerpts from the, Union Advocate, amongst the church records. TAM.]
11NOV2002
[Referring to baptisms dated 1870’s.]
I'm back with a few more
baptisms for you. . .trying something different this time.
For your interest. . . .
These old church records were found in the attic of the manse in the 1970's by
Rev. Charles Swan in rather poor condition. Luckily for us, he recognized the
value of these decrepit files, and donated them to the archives in Sackville,
NB. Some of the pages did not survive, and of those that did, many entries are
of poor quality. . . some are totally illegible, and some are only legible
because *a few* letters are visible, and, . . . since I am familiar with the
characters involved, I can fill in the blanks in occasional cases. Even with
that . . . you will find a lot of question marks.
All of these entries came from the United Church Archives in
Sackville, NB.
17NOV2002
While at the library in Tabusintac during the summer, I browsed
through an old donated scrapbook, and found some interesting news clippings.
Unfortunately, most of them were undated. If anyone can fill in the blanks,
would you please let us know ? Thanks. Only had time to copy down a few of them
. . . will do more next summer.

"EMIGRATION TO CANADA
The Canadian Literary Journal contains some curious statements
respecting the character and extent of the recent emigration from Europe to the
Canadas. Prior to the year 1830, the number of emigrants was comparatively
small, and they were almost exclusively laboring men, wholly destitute of
pecuniary resources, who came out for the purpose of procuring the means of
subsistence. Within the last 3 years, the number of emigrants has been 3 or 4
times as great as the average of several years preceding, and a large portion
of them have been farmers of considerable property, professional men, and
retired officers of the army and navy. The value of real estate in the
Provinces, says the Journal, has been everywhere materially increased, and that
of the wild lands in Upper Canada has been more than doubled. The number of
emigrants in 1829 was 15,945, in 1830, was 28,000, in 1831, 50,254, and in
1832, 51,746.
Of this last number, 16,830 were males, 17,052 were females, and
14,864 were children under 14 years of age. All of them were voluntary
emigrants, excepting about 5,000, who received parochial aid. 35, 000 went to
Upper Canada, 10,000 remained in Lower Canada, 2350 died of cholera, 850
returned to their own country, and 3346 went to the United states. During the
last 4 years, the increase of emigration from England has been five-fold, from
Ireland, three-fold, and from Scotland, two-fold, and the emigration was
greater by 70% than that of the preceding year, while emigration from Ireland
was diminished by 15%.
The professional men who came out during the last year, have
established themselves in the towns and villages of Upper Canada, the officers
have obtained ,and in general settled upon the lands to which they are entitled
for their services; and the agricultural emigrants have purchased cultivated
farms in different parts of the provinces. The laboring class have been settled
on the wild land belonging to the Crown, a large portion of which are in the
district of Newcastle. It was in this district that the first experiment was
made of settling bodies of indigent emigrants upon these lands, and though
various difficulties have been encountered, the Journal declares that it has
been eminently successful: the population of this district having increased
since the year 1817, from 4,000 to 30,000. The advantages derived from
emigration are attributed chiefly to the exertions of Lieutenant Governor, Sir
John Colborne, who has not only done much to promote it, but has distinguished
himself by his efforts to secure the comfort and prosperity of the
emigrants."
22 March, 1834 edition of the, Chatham Gleaner:
The 'Marriage Act' was passed in the last session of Parliament
and has since received royal assent.
"An act to extend the privilege of solemnizing marriage to
all ministers or Teachers of the several religious Congregations in this
Province."
[My understanding was that, until this time, marriages could only
be performed by Anglican (the “Established Church”) or Roman Catholic priests,
or by Church of Scotland ministers and magistrates. Effectively Baptist,
Methodist and other dissenting denominations had no authority. From this point,
one finds the Methodist and Baptist congregations growing and active
recruitment by travelling evangelists. TAM]
2 Dec 2002
Hi, all.
After being told by different people that no Tabusintac Methodist
records existed, I was pleasantly surprised to find a few wedding entries among
the United Church archives, along with a record of membership in that
congregation during 1901-02, again in 1902-03, and later, in 1923, when the
Methodists joined the Presbyterian Church in Tabusintac.
These surnames are found on the roster in 1901-02. (Hierlihy,
Robertson, Price, Fraser, England, Strang, Harding, Murray, McEachern, plus a
Stymiest, Savoy, Milligan, McInnis, Palmer, Dickenson and Lee.)
Then in 1902-03, the following names are added. (Ashford,
Blanchard, Edmunds, Girvan, McKnight, McCullam, Stewart.)
After entering the weddings over the next few notes to you, I'll
give a full printout of the names on the Communion roll, and next time I get a
chance to review the tape, will note what other info is available . . . but for
the most part, it seems to be just terribly dull meetings.
So here are a few of those Methodist weddings . . . (found 9 in
total.)
5DEC2002
Here is the "Membership of the Church of Tabusintac embracing
the Methodists of Tabusintac, Tracadie , Neguac , New Jersey , Bay du Vin, and
Escuminac”, in 1901 - 1902.
Note. A (*) is placed beside those names that have a notation
beside the original that "looks like" it says 'died' or 'dead',
however, all of these same names turn up still on the register in 1902 -
1903!!??

[referring to baptisms 1924-1925]
Hi.
The Methodists entered union with the Presbyterian Church in
Tabusintac on Dec 9, 1923. Then in 1925, the Presbyterian Church joined the
United Church of Canada. A percentage of the original Presbyterians and
original Methodists refused to join this new union, and instead, they built a
new Presbyterian Church in Tabusintac the following year. The following former
Methodist parents(who did join the new United Church) had these children
baptised by the minister, Rev. John C. Mortimer in 1924 and 1925.
1JAN2003
Then, in the " A History of Tabusintac, NB, " published
in 1975, found the following in the notes on page 64, made about the W.S.LOGGIE
Co. Lobster factory.
"The cooks who worked here over the years are : Helen
Milligan, Maria Ashford, Mary Ann Lee, Will MacDonald, Herb Robertson, and Ed
Palmer."
"Price Settlement Post Office" ( As written in 'A
History of Tabusintac, NB',1975 edition)
"The Price Settlement Post Office was established on Jan 15,
1909 and remained open until May 31, 1948. 'Geographical Names of New
Brunswick' states that the office was named for an early settler named William
Price, who arrived from Prince Edward Island around 1830.
Appropriately, the name of the first postmaster was Price ---
Jacob Price, Sr., who held the post until his death on June 8, 1939. Mrs
Isabella Price filled in as Acting Postmaster for a few months, until she was
relieved by Henry Price, who remained in the position from the time of his
appointment on Aug 15, 1939 until the office was closed May 31, 1948. Service
continued as Tabusintac RR #1. Then RR#1 and RR #2 were amalgamated on Oct 1,
1968, and is now RR#2.”
11JAN2003
Hello. These 1906 baptisms, found in the United Church Archives,
were all performed by Ernest S. Weeks. Would appreciate it if you can help out
by giving the maiden name of the mother of these children. I suspect all of these
were in fact, Methodist baptisms that managed to get saved with the UC archives
records.
I find it fitting that these names will end up where they started,
in the Methodist Church. I will be placing a copy of these baptisms in the
library in Tabusintac, along with the marriages and deaths that have been
posted. Most of you are probably aware that the library in Tabusintac started
it's life as the Methodist Church. It was built of hand hewn lumber, and was
put together using hand carved pegs. There were no nails used. It still feels
strong and sturdy today, well over a century after it was built.
18JAN2003
I came across a lot of names (392 names in total) that were on the
Communion Roll of the Presbyterian Church of the Tabusintac circuit found in
the United Church Archives. Some of them have notations as to when the name was
removed from the list. In some cases, the person moved, in others, they
transferred, but in a few lucky instances, it gives at least a year of death.
This is especially valuable, since death records were rare before the 1900's
(and there wasn't a Hugh Murray to be found among all these names!)
A word of caution here... the date below may not be the actual
date of death. (Then again, maybe it is.) The first column in the register gave
the date the name was removed from the roll, and the second column gave the
reason for its' removal. In each case below, that was due to death. So,
although these are perhaps not actual dates of death, at least it is probably
close, and might help pinpoint a time frame for those who are not sure of a
DOD.
If anyone knows the actual dod of some of these people, it will
give an idea of how close these dates are.

Elizabeth Johnstone was born June 01, 1787, and married 05 March 1814 in

Johnston was from "No??holm", St. Mungo, which is close to Dalton,

John Loggie s/o
Alexander Loggie drowned between Chatham and Burnt Church Wednesday ca.
11OCT1876
We regret to learn that on Wed last, a young man named JOHN LOGGIE, son
of ALEXANDER LOGGIE Esq., of Burnt Church, was accidentally knocked overboard
from his fathers schooner while on his way from Chatham to Burnt Church - every
exertion was made by the crew to save him, but without success. Much sympathy
is expressed to the family in their sudden and sad bereavement. This is the
second son Mr Loggie has lost during the past year, another son having taken
sick and died while on his way from California to spend his Christmas with his
friends at home. (Newcastle, Union Advocate, 18OCT1876; if the paper was
issued Wednesdays, then the event took place seven days before.)
The body of JOHN LOGGIE, son of Mr. ALEX LOGGIE of Burnt Church, who was
drowned from the schooner "Saturn", off Sheldrake Island last fall,
was found at Point au Carr recently. The remains were interred at Burnt Church
on Saturday last. (Newcastle, Union Advocate, ca. MAY1877.)

clues, not only to the origins of the Johnston(e)s, but to the McKenzies.]
(According to the Scottish OPR's ( Old Parish Records), which are the only
records of BMD's in this time frame:
Elizabeth Johnstone was born June 01, 1787, and married 05 March 1814 in
Dalton, Dumfries, Scotland to David McKenzie of Whitecroft, Dalton. Elizabeth
Johnston was from "No??holm", St. Mungo, which is close to Dalton,
(Dumfries, Scotland.) In "Vital Stats from NB newspapers" by Daniel
F. Johnson at the provincial archives in Fredericton, Vol. 19-2501, I found the
following death announcement:
“Died Tabusintac , North'ld Co, 23rd ult
Elizabeth Johnston McKensay ( sic). Cross reference "MacKenzie" wife
of David McKensay, age 73 native of Dumfries, Scotland. death occurred 23 Feb,
