 Includes NotesNotes for Anthony Jansen:
Anthony Jansen came from Fez or Salee, Morocco to reside in New Amsterdam about 1633 to 1639. Slaves were brought to New Amsterdam during these years. He was known as a "Turk", and was banished from New Amsterdam in April of 1639, in consequence of improper conduct on his part and that of his wife, Grietje Reiners (also spelled Reyniers).
It is said that she "pulled the shirts of some sailors out of their breeches and in her house measured the male members of three sailors on a broomstick" which perhaps explained why when the crew of a departing ship caught sight of her on the shore they began chanting, "Whore, Whore, Two pound butter's whore!" When she and her husband were finally expelled in 1639, they took up farming on Long Island in the vicinity of what is now New Utrecht. Their farm was known as "Turks Plantation".*
On August 3, 1639, he obtained a grant of 200 acres of land on the west end of Long Island, New York. "The original and first patent for this land was to Anthony Jansen for 200 acres, dated May 27, 1643, and was known as "Turk's Plantation", and later known as "Bruynenbergh"." On it were located the villages of Gravesend and New Utrecht. Anthony Jansen was the first settler in these towns and he was still found there in the records on May 29, 1645.
His second marriage was to Metje Gravenraet in 1670, and he died in March, 1676 without a will. The widow, "Mattice Gravenraet", was the only hier named on March 25, 1677.
