OHN ADAMS and NANCY THOMAS:
Marriage: March 11, 1862, Grundy Co., Tennessee

Notes for S
ARAH ELIZABETH BYARS:
Sarah Elizabeth Byars was born in Blount County Alabama on January 1, 1840. She is found living in Blounts Springs, Blount Co. Alabama 1850 Census with her parents John W. and Rebecca (Harwood) Byars. There is a marriage record in Blount County, Alabama for Sarah Elizabeth Byars and Lewis R. McAnally who married on 4-18-1858. They had three children all born in Blount Co. Alabama, John born 1859, Louis Henry born 1863 and Malinda Artilla born 1862. Lewis and Sarah are found in the 1860 Blount Co. Alabama Census.

Lewis enlisted into the Confederate Army serving in the 12th Regiment of the Alabama Cavalry under Col. William Hundley and Major Bennett. They operated in east Tennessee and later consolidated with the First Alabama near Murfreesboro. They fought at Murfreesboro and Chickamauga. Lewis was killed in the Civil War.

After the war, Sarah Elizabeth Byars McAnally is found in the 1870 Census living in Athens, Limestone Co. Alabama with her 3 children. Between 1870 and 1872 she moved to Grundy Co. Tennessee where she married John Quincy Adams. Sarah might have moved to Grundy Co. after her mother, Rebecca Harwood Byars died in 1855 and her father John W. Byars remarried Sarah Jane Morgan in Jefferson Co. Ala. on January 26, 1862. John W. and Sarah had three children, Mary, William and Joab Lambirth born 1867 in Jasper, Alabama and died in 1931 in Grundy Co. Tennessee. It appears that Sarah's step-mother Sarah Morgan Byars moved to Grundy Co and died at Tracy City, Grundy Co. in 1903. It is also thought that Edmon Morgan Adams was named for Sarah Morgan Byars. (Sarah Morgan Byars remarried in Grundy Co. to Thomas Meeks).

John and Sarah Adams had three children, Nancy Amanda Palestine, Edmon Morgan and Joseph Green Adams. John Quincy Adams died while working in the fields of his farm on March 13, 1887. He was found in the field at the plow and died of heart disease. (Source May 14, 1887 Coroner report which states he died in Franklin Co. Tn.)
His grave site has not been found but it could be one of the unmarked graves at the Harris Bell Cemetery on the old Harris Bell Farm at Bell Cove, Grundy County, Tennessee. There are suppose to be a number of Thomas, Adams and Bell family members buried there.

After the death of John Q. Adams, Sarah took her 3 small Adams children to Montgomery Co. Arkansas. She had 3 sisters and their families that were living in Montgomery and Garland Cos. of Arkansas in the late 1880's.

Her older sister, Manerva A. Byars Thomas who was born on May 15, 1835 in Blount Co. Alabama, died 11-23-1898 in Montgomery Co. Arkansas moved to Arkansas in the late 1880's and bought land from the federal government. Manerva was a widow after her husband, Jacob J. Thomas was killed in the Civil War. (He served in the 1st Tennessee Volunteers). Her daughter, Margaret J. Wacaster signed as a witness for Manerva on the Pension application forms for Confederate soldiers widows. Sarah Elizabeth Adams, Manerva Thomas and Hunter Nelson Freeman (Manerva's nephew) are all buried at Howerton Cemetery, Arkansas

Her sister Margaret J. Byars born March 26, 1838 in Blount Co. Alabama married Pleasant Marcus Mullings on November 4, 1858 in Blount Co., Alabama. Pleasant served in the Civil War as a 1st Lieutenant in Co "F" 29th Reg't Alabama Infantry. He was wounded in both legs on July 21, 1864 at Lovejoy Station, Georgia. After the war he moved his family from Alabama to first Hunt Co. Texas in 1870. In 1872, they moved to Mazarn, Arkansas and he built his log home which still
stands today after 121 years. Pleasant became the first postmaster of Mazarn on July 26, 1880.
More is written on Pleasant and Margaret Jane in the Byars section.

Sarah's other sister, Malissa Byars born 1842 in Blount Co. Alabama married Joseph Mullings and also moved to Montgomery Co. Arkansas.

It is speculated that Sarah Elizabeth Byars McAnally Adams moved to Arkansas to be near her three sisters and their families. [Brøderbund Family Archive #253, Ed. 1, Land Records: AR, FL, LA, Land Records Arkansas Land Records, Date of Import: Jul 30, 1999, Internal Ref. #1.253.1.24.25]
