      2. John HENDERSON, born 23 December 1763 in Taylor's Creek, Hanover, VA6; died 01 April 1835 in Brownsville, Haywood, TN6. He was the son of 4. William HENDERSON and 5. Mary TRAHEREN. He married 3. Nancy SINGLETON 29 July 1788 in Lincoln Co., KY7.

      3. Nancy SINGLETON8, born Abt. 1767 in King & Queen Co., VA9; died June 1834 in Brownsville, Haywood, TN9. She was the daughter of 6. Christopher SINGLETON and 7. Sarah HUNLEY.

Notes for John HENDERSON:
      By 1788, or at age 25, the same year he and Nancy were m., John was listed in the Fayette county, KY Census Index. He was also on the Tax List of Madison Co. by 1789. (Source; "Colonial America , 1607 - 1789 Census Index, p. 9)
.      John and his wife built a beautiful log cabin on the banks of the Dix River, just south of the DAVIS family in Garrard Co., KY. The place was much later inundated with water when the dam was placed to form Lake Harrison. All their children were b. and raised there.
      In the 1820's, they moved to TN, and then in 1832 they moved up to IL. However, there was a massacre there, about which they were all warned by Chief Shabonna. John took his wife and all but one child with him to the safety of Ottawa, about 11 miles away, just before the massacre of the DAVIS family at their dam.
      John and Nancy then moved back to TN, where they d. a couple of years later and were bur. in the Sevier Plot, Brownsville Cemetery, Haywood Co., TN.       John served in the battle of the Indian Wars at Maumee/Fallen TImbers, in 1794.

  ii.   Col. William Hendrick HENDERSON, born 16 November 1795 in Garrad Co., KY9; died 27 January 1864 in Marshalltown, Marshall, IA10; married (1) Lucinda WIMBERLY; born 16 November 1793 in Stewart Co., TN; married (2) Sarah Murphy HOWARD 06 November 1823 in Brownsville, Haywood, TN11.
  Notes for Col. William Hendrick HENDERSON:
      He fought in the War of 1812, where he learned the trade of surveyor. He was also a farmer and a politician, being very much an Abolitionist.

  iii.   Sarah HENDERSON, born Abt. 28 July 1796 in Garrard Co., KY12; married Joshua BURDETT 25 May 1815 in Garrard Co., KY13.
  iv.   Mary Hendricks "Polly" HENDERSON, born Abt. 23 June 1798 in Garrard Co., KY14; died 19 December 1879 in Gopher Valley, Yamhill, OR15; married (1) Absalom RICE 12 March 1816 in Garrard Co., KY; married (2) Charles HOWARD November 1823 in Haywood Co., TN15.
  Notes for Charles HOWARD:
      The HOWARDS went with Polly's parents to LaSalle Co., IL, but then returned with them to TN, and eventually moved on to gopher Valley, OR, going with a wagon train. (Source: Pollock, Elsie, pp. 64, 73, 79).

  Notes for John Hope HENDERSON:
      Both John Hope and Elizabeth were bur. in the Harding Cemetery, De Kalb Co., IL. Their barn was a stop on the Underground R.R. the town of Harding was platted by John Hope, and he gave the land to the town.   Notes for Singleton J. HENDERSON:
      He received a degree from the Medical College of Memphis, TN, but changed his mind and became a Methodist minister, in and out of the Memphis Conference. He ministered at Legrange, Tishomingo, Coffeeville, Grenada, Aberdeen, Holly Springs, Memphis Valley Chapel, and Ashbury Chapel, TN. He also served as pastor of First Methodist Church, Memphis.
