Kenneth (Cinaed) l Mac Alpin, King Picts & Scots (b. Abt. 810, d. 860)
Kenneth (Cinaed) l Mac Alpin, King Picts & Scots (son of ALPIN of GALBHRAN) was born Abt. 81022, and died 86022.
Notes for Kenneth (Cinaed) l Mac Alpin, King Picts & Scots: Kenneth gained his claim to the throne from his mother, probably a Pictish Princess, when she married into the House of Dalraida. He was "marvelously astute", and he succeeded in uniting the Picts and Scots. The Vikings were raging against the Isles at that time, and possibly they killed off the Picts, for their culture seemed to disappear completely. The Vikings came to plunder, but stayed to settle and eventually became Chistian. so the newly founded Scotia was surrounded by Norse settlements. Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles remained under Norse domination for hundreds of years. The other settlements were on the west coast and in the south. Just 20 years after Kenneth united his two kingdoms, York fell to the Vikings, cutting off the country to the north of it from A lo-Saxon England. Kenneth made a number of attempts to take Lothian, but did not succeed. The Scottish law of succession now took over. It was called tanistry, which meant that any mature the royal kindred was eligible for kingship, if he were "the stuff of kings". The king's successor was nominated in his lifetime, and became the tanist, or second to the king. Kenneth established his seat of government at Scone, which then became the traditional coronation place of Scottish kings. He brought the 'Stone of Destiny to Scone, and it became called the 'Stone of Scone". By tradition, the new kings were seated upon the stone ceremonially, as part of their inauguration. Legend made it the pillow of Jacob at Bethel, which had been brought from the Holy Land to Ireland by the remote ancestors of the Scots, and from Ireland to Scotland by Fergus Mor mac Erc. He also sought to remove the spiritual center of the country from the far west, by bringing the relics of St. Columba from Iona to Dunkeld. Later, Constantine ll would move it again to St. Andrews, where he went after abdicating. St. Andrews then became the spiritual capital of the kingdom.
