LAST NIGHTS FIRE
RESIDENCE OF THOS. M. RUSHTON TOTALLY DESTROYED
Only a Portion of the Furniture Saved on Which There Was $300 Insurance, and But $600. Insurance on the Building.

"During the fierce storm last evening the alarm of fire was given from the telephone office and in a very few minutes crowds were crossing the bridge, attracted by the glare from that direction. It tuned out to be the residence of Thos. M. Rushton that was in flames, and it had such a start before help reached there that nothing could be done to stay the progress of the fire and but a portion of the household goods were saved.
The fire, which caught in the chamber over the kitchen, presumably from the chimney was first discovered by the little boy. The three youngest children were at home alone, Maggie aged 17, the oldest, and Erland and Mattie. Irland started upstairs but found the chamber to be all ablaze. The children Thought of the telephone and turned an alarm in to Central and then did the best they could to save the furniture. Only a portion of the furniture in the down stairs part of the upright was saved as the fire had too good a start to allow of any effort being made upstairs or in the wing. Mr. Rushton was at the K.P. lodge when the alarm was given and was soon on the spot but too late to secure his papers or other valuables. Among other things the tax roll was destroyed but as the Treasurer has his copy no great inconvenience will be experienced on that account.
We understand that only a small insurance was carried, $600 on the house and $350 on the contents."

Copied from book entitled "Biographical History or Northern Michigan" published in 1905, and purchased by Thomas Milton Rushton for 15. Dollars

"Thomas M. Rushton was born in Howard, Kent county, Ontario, January 30, 1846 and is the son of Thomas and Margaret Scafe Rushton, natives of Nova Scotia and England respectively. The subject ancestors were among the early English colonists in the united Sates but being loyal to the crown and desirous to escape the insults, annoyances and dangers to which so many friends of the mother country were subject during the war of the Revolution they migrated to Nova Scotia, in which providence the family has been represented ever since.

By occupation Thomas Rushton, (the father of Thomas Milton) was a blacksmith and harness maker. He was engaged in merchandising for a number of years and in connection with these several callings also devoted considerable attention to farming. In politics he a reformer and being a man of standing and influence in his community, made his presence felt in public affairs, becoming to a certain extent a local leader of the party with which he acted. He moved to Antrim County, Michigan about 1878, and spent the remainder of his life on the farm now owned by Thomas M. Rushton (Albert Roy Rushton now living on the same far, holding a life lease, and owned by his son, Donald Milton Rushton).

Thomas Rushton died March 23, 1894, at the age of 79 years, his widow dying at the age of 86 years, of the three serving children of Thomas and Margaret Rushton who reside in Antrim County, Mrs. Gilman Wilson and Thomas M. the other daughter being a resident of California.

(Mrs. Gilman Wilson being Eliza and Granddad says the other daughter was named, Laura Smith and he doesn't know much about her, also there was a son named Jake that had children named Thomas, Suzie, and Vinny that after Jake was killed was raised by Thomas Milton, Suzie by Beals, and Vinny by Gilman Wilson. The Thomas has a son that lives now in Harbor Springs, Mich. Named Clarence Rushton.)

Thomas Milton was reared on a farm in his native country and enjoyed the advantages of a public school training. He remained with his parents until 1878, when he came to Antrim county, Michigan, settling near Central Lake a tract of then wild land that he purchased and from which in due time he cleared and developed what is now regarded as one of the finest and most valuable farms in the township of Central Lake. In removing the forest growth with which his place was originally covered he destroyed a great deal of valuable timber, which if left standing a few years and converted into lumber would more than have paid for the land.

As a farmer Mr. Rushton has been enterprising in all the term implies, and few men of his community similarly engaged have made a rapid progress as he or met with equal success in the accumulation of a competency.

In the year 1884, Mr. Rushton laid out the original plat of The Village of Central Lake, consisting of ten acres on the east side of Intermediate Lake, all of which has been sold and the late improved with neat residences. A founder of the village he has manifested a lively interest in its welfare serving one year as its president, township clerk for 11 years and for ten consecutive years served on the board of supervisors, the last four as chairman, retiring in 1903.

On March 28, 1872 Mr. Rushton was married to Miss Laura Clarissa Wilson of Kent county, Canada, a union terminated by death of the faithful and devoted wife and mother after twenty-eight years, March 15, 1900. Seven children were born to Mr. And Mrs. Rushton their names being as follows, Manly B. of Summit, Idaho; Idessa William H. Upthegrove of Antrim county; Roy, who lives at home; Milo, of Central Lake; Margaret, the housekeeper and her fathers faithful keeper and advisor Erlon and Mattie, the last two still at home."
