Notes for J
AMES CLENDENEN:
James Clendenen left Ohio after the death of his first wife and headed west, looking for a new beginning. He scouted for the railroad for a short while, until he came across a huge stone quarry in Iowa. Seeing this, he settled down in Van Buren County, Iowa and became a stone mason by trade.
James left his small children, from his first marriage, in Ohio with relatives, intending to return and bring them to his new life in Iowa. But he was never able to do this. Something that worn heavy on his heart his entire life.

When four years old he came with his parents to Davis County, Iowa. In the fall of 1860 he went to Agency, Iowa to learn the blacksmith trade under James Stevens. On November 27, 1862, he answered the national call and enlisted in Company C, 7th Iowa Cavalry Volunteers, in the service until the close of the war and was mustered out at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
On September 28, 1866, he was united in marriage to Lucy E. Wilcox of Fremont, Mahsaka County, Iowa, who preceded him in death January 28, 1826. To this union was born four children, the two eldest died when small children, the other two sons remaining are J.W. McMickle of Milton, Iowa, and A. J. McMickle of Hedrick, Iowa. Also, seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren; two brothers, J.W. McMickle, Sr. of Eldon, Iowa, and James A. McMickle of California, one sister, Julia Ann Ritchie of Allerton, Iowa; several nephews and nieces and a host of friends.
After his marriage he lived near Fremont, Iowa, until 1876, then moving to Searsboro, Iowa, living in and around Searsboro until the spring of 1902, coming to Davis County, residing in Troy and Milton until eight years ago, going to Oskaloosa until health could not permit them to keep their house any longer, they went to the Soldiers Home at Marshalltown four years ago.
Funeral services were held at Union Chapel, August 15th, conducted by Rev. George Filmer, and burial beside his wife in the Able's Cemetery 6 miles northwest of Hedrick, Iowa, thus the ranks are thinning out of the boys of '61 and '65 who so bravely defended our Flag that we might be as one great Union.
Rev. Filmer will be remembered by Milton people as their pastor following C.H. Norton, 1891-92. He is a retired minister now and lives at Hedrick.

UCY EMELINE WILCOX:
OBITUARY

Lucy Emma Wilcox, daughter of Alfred G. and Sarah Wilcox, was born in Highland County, Ohio July 30, 1844 and died in the hospital at Marshalltown, Iowa, January 28, 1926, age 81 years, 5 months and 28 days.
She was one of six children. All but one brother having preceded her in death.
When she was nine years of age, her parents came to Iowa, settling near Birmingham, Van Buren County, staying there until she was fourteen years of age. With her parents she came to Mahaska County near Fremont.
On September 28, 1866, she was united in marriage to W.H. McMickle of Fremont, where they resided on a farm until 187*, moving to Searsboro, Iowa, this vicinity where the greater part of her married life was spent. To this union four children were born, three boys and one girl, the oldest boy and the one girl having died when small children. She is survived by her husband, Mr. W.H. McMickle of Marshalltown and two sons, J.W. McMickle of Milton, and A.J. McMickle of Hedrick; seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
When a young girl she was converted and baptized in the Baptist faith under Rev. Fry's pleading at Fremont, later uniting with the Friends Church at Searsboro, where she took an active part in church work, being an officer in the church for years. In 1902, having moved to troy, Iowa, she put her letter in the M.E. church of that place and retained her church relation until called by her Heavenly Father. Thus has passed one who was faithful to the teaching of the Savior, always thinking of the welfare of others, ready to help those in need, administering to the sick, comforting the sorrowing. She was an invalid for the last four years never complaining nor murmuring as to her lot.
The remains were brought top Hedrick, Iowa Saturday, January 30th, burial taking place at the Christian Union Cemetery beside her two children who are buried there.
