disaster struck the Dole valley in the fall of 1902 when of September 11, flames came racing uncontrolled from far to the west. Settlers packed what precious belongings could be quickly gathered up and groped their way through dense smoke, leaving their homes to the terror. When they could return, they walked through miles of ashes, with no green thing in site. The once huge, cool, green forest was a maze of blackened spires amid the jumble of charred down trees. Now after a half century, a new forest is appearing on the hills, but all about are the stark black columns of the giant firs that over the decades have refused to fall even in death. Another half century will pass, and still these limbless trunks will stand to bear evidence of man's carelessness with fire. But in the meantime, the persistency of nature will have restored a productive forest to the hills, possibly not so predominately composed of giant-sized boles, but sawmills will hum, and cattle will graze in the valley pastures. There might even someday be another post office named Dole in the valley.

ATIRA EMALINE DANIELS:
Obit. of Satira Sutton: Newspaper unknown

Memories of life in the backwoods of Kentucky, a farm in Arkansas and a six month trip across the plains to Oregon with a 60 wagon train ended Thursday with the passing of Satira Emaline Sutton, 89, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Gladys Swallow, Standfield. The pioneer resident had lived in Standfield only 10 years. She had moved to the city in 1948 from Independence, Oregon, where she and her husband had lived since 1909 and raised eight children.
Mrs. Sutton's life story could have been the basis of an interesting novel. Born in Fort Smith, Ark., December 21, 1868, Mrs. Sutton was 15 years old when her parents and family joined the wagon train for the six month trip to Oregon. Also on the trip was the family of Jess Daniels. Both Mrs. Sutton's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Daniels, and the Bailey family settled in Albion, Idaho.
On March 19, 1884 Satira Daniels became Mrs. Zachariah Sutton. In 1910, with their eight children, the Suttons moved to a farm near Independence, staying at that location until 1948 when they came to Standfield. Mr. Sutton died in 1948.
Funeral services were held at the Burns Memorial chapel, Herminston, Sunday afternoon the Rev. Robert Ellison officiating. He spoke on the subject, "Three Questions." Mrs. Ella Mae Watson played the organ. Solos by Clarence Graham presented "Shadows" and "In the Sweet By and By."
Pall bearers were Tom Uding, Ted Peterson, Harold Hunkers, Bill Lyons, Charles Hedrick, and Howard Hiskey.
Mrs. Sutton was survived by two sons, Ballice, Hines, Oregon, and Merrit, Albany; and five daughters, Mrs. Lydia DeCoaster, Albany; Mrs. Rex Warren, Twin Falls, Idaho, and Mrs. N.E. (Gladys) Swallow, Mrs. Margaret Oberson and Mrs. Mamie Dixon, all of Standfield. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and 12 great-great grandchildren.
Concluding services were held in the Echo cemetery where she was buried beside her husband.
