Dear Janice and Willis,

Lee Cate gave me your e-mail addresses as descendants of Theodore Barnhill
and Rebecca Casey Worley. My cousin Barbara and I are working on a
biography for the Hardin Co. TN website on Worleys and allied families in
the Civil War in Hardin Co. We would like to include Theodore based on a
newspaper article sent to us from Lee Cate.

Do you have any information on this family? When did Rebecca die? Did
Theodore ever receive a pension for his CSA service? I read somewhere that
he had a brother who died in the Civil War and somewhere else that he had
three brothers who died in the Civil War and yet another place that he had
two nephews in the Civil War. Do you have any information in this regard?

Sure hope to hear from you! Charlotte Haris

hi Charlotte,
Well, all of us have bits and pieces of information. I think some of it, like the brothers in the war and Theodore's children have gotten a bit mixed according to my records. We were going hot and heavy for a while and I think stuff got shifted a bit.
Yes Theodore finally did get his pension. Because he was feeble and I guess the authorities finally accepted the affidavits the other soldiers gave on his behalf, he was given $75/ quarterly. The quarterly claim blank from the State of Oklahoma Pension No. 5030 to Theodore F. Barnhill from the Commissioner of Pensions, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Department No. 69 was dated 4-4-27. Theodore could not write, he left his mark on the papers I have. His middle name was spelled with an 'F' for Filander on these papers. I have seen it also spelled with a 'PH' , Phylander. The government never found a T.F. Barnhill, but they did find a T.P. Barnhill 2nd Co. G. 1st Confederate Cavalry, (Formerly Capt. Robertson's Co. Tenn. Cav, enlisted Oct 21 1861 at Jackson . No further records were found for him. Nothing about his capture or parole. Charles S. Robertson, (also borne as Robinson) was Liet-Colonel of the Regiment, and James W. Irwin was Captain of 2nd Co. G.
(copied from the pension file)
Theodore said he was in the battle of Shiloh , was shot in the thigh and was captured. The newspaper article says that also. It also said that he was on furloh at the end of the war , so was not officially paroled. The pension papers say he was paroled 1865 near Purdy, TN.
Affidavit No.1
--------------------
L.W. Barnhill and Elmer Bivins of Lindsay, Garvin Cou. Ok swear that Theodore has been a resident of Oklahoma.

Application of Indigent Soldier or Sailor of the Confederacy for a Pension...
---------------
Theodore applied for the pension 14 May 1925 when he was 92 years old.
Enlisted in Savannah , TN 1861.
He gives Co. G 9th Tennesse Regiment under Capt. Jim Erwin . Charley Robinson is scratched out.

Affidavits from fellow soldiers
-------------------
no.1
William H. Franks of Duke , OK swears Theodore was in Company G. 1st Tenn Cavalry from 1861 to end of war. Released on 10 May 1865 at Gainsville, ALA.
Under Capt. Jim Erwin.
William Franks was in the same unit. ( There is a difference between the 1st Tenn Cavalry and the 1st Confederate Cavalry which may have caused a problem with id)

no.2
J.A. Gammill of Ranger, TX swears that Theodore served in Co. G 1st Confederate Regiment Cavalry - Tennessee, from early 1861 to the end of the war 1865.
Under Capt. Jim Irwin. Released from service 10 May 1865 at Gainesville, ALA.
J.A. Gammill was in company C of Cruises Battalion from 1861 to 1863. He was captured at Shiloh.

no.2 (another try I guess)
James M Barnhill of Savannah Tennesse swears that T.F. Barnhill served from 1861 to 1865 in Co. G. 1st CSA Regiment of Cavalry. Officers were Capt. C.S. Roberson and Capt. J.W. Irwin.
James M. Barnhill was in the same company.

James M. Barnhill's pension was applied for in June 1927 from the State of Tennessee. No. 16163.
This James M. Barnhill was born 12 May 1843. He was born at Savannah, Hardin Co. Tn.
He participated in the Battle of Chickamauga, Battle of Missionary Ridge, Battle of Shiloh and a number of small battles in Kentucky.
From the newspaper article we dont know when Theodore escaped and finally met up with the troops in GA. I cant find my battle chronology book, but you might be able to tell if he was in the other battles before Shiloh. I thought Shiloh was very early, but I would have to check. You guys could probably check that too.
This James Monroe Barnhill would be Theodore's nephew.

Theodore had two brothers that died in the war. John and William, according to my notes. I may have gotten that partly from the letter written by Theodore's grandson Lafayette William Barnhill to Oscar Barnhill (Lee Cate should have this also). The letter mentions that Theodore lost a brother in the war, but does not mention a name. this brother had a wife and 4 boys. I believe there was a census record that showed brothers John and William. I would have to check on that.
There was a T.L. Barnhill enlisted as pvt. in Co. B, 18th Cav. at Goll Hill, TN on 4-15-1864. Was wounded at Harrisburg, MS in July 1864. Served under Capt. Wm. Barnhill. I have not tried to get the records for this William Barnhill. That would be a good idea. (received this info from Byron Sistler. He did some research for me)

Theodore F. Barnhill married Rebecca Casey Worley was born about 1833 in Hardin County. TN. She was the fifth child of 8 born to Johann Michael Worley and Mary Martin.
I dont have a death date for Rebecca. Theodore T. Barnhill died at the old soldiers home in Ardmore Oklahoma 28 June 1929. (death certificate). He was widowed at the time of death so Rebecca must have died earlier.
Theodore's father was William Barnhill and his mother was Ann Reagin. Both were from TN. We are collecting Reagin information now. Do you have Bob Martin's email?
He is descended from William and Anne through son James Monroe Barnhill.

Let me know if I can get more info. I'm sure Will and Bob will have something to add.
