Sketch of Philander BARNHILL written by Mrs. Emma C. Jones < 1929 neighbor

SKETCH OF PHILANDER BARNHILL
Mrs. Emma C. Jones, Box 602, Lindsay, OK.

Theodore Philander Barnhill served as a Confederate soldier in Company G. Ninth Regiment, Tennesee Cavalry, of the East Division under Gen. Forest. His first Captain was Roberson, but he was afterward under James Irvin. He married Miss Rebecca Worley of Savanna, Hardin Co., Tenn. by whom he raised one son, Preston Barnhill, who died several years ago. He lost all the brothers he had in the Confederate Army. They were John, Will, and James.
It is almost like fiction to hear him tell of some of his scouting adventures while in the army. He was captured by the enemy once, put on board a steamboat at Savannah and just walked out among the soldiers on deck as they started the boat , got in one of their canoes, cut it loose, lay flat and drifted down the river about one fourth of a mile when he kicked the seat from the canoe, used it as an oar and paddled to a cane brake. There he stayed for two days in his wet clothes, when a little girl hunting cows came near and he sent word to his wife to bring him some dry clothes. His wife was very much frightened for fear the enemy would get him again.
He then, by some means, obtained another horse and rode south about five miles a day as the exposure had made him sick and he was barely able to ride at all. After several days riding he had to stop and, as luck would have it, the man he stopped with was Dr. Johnson, who had waited on his father in his last days.
He stayed with this doctor, near Holly Springs, Miss. where he was treated very kindly and cared for until he was able to ride, when he joined the Confederate Army in Georgia. He was on a ten days furlough when the war closed and never did get his discharge. If any one of his comrades is living and sees this please write to me for he needs his pension very badly and deserves it certainly if any one ever did. He's over 80 years old. I am one of his nearest neighbors and write this for him as he has tried in vain to find one of his old comrades.
