Descendants of John Crosby

Generation No. 6

6. SIMON6 CROSBY (THOMAS5, ANTHONY4, THOMAS3, MILES2, JOHN1)2 was born Bet. 1608 - 1609 in England. He married ANN BRIGHMAN. She was born Bet. 1606 - 1611, and died 1675.

Notes for S
IMON CROSBY:
Sailed from England on the "Susan & Ellyn" April 18, 1635.

Records of his marriage, baptism of his eldest child and his sailing from London to New England are found in England.

Early in April 1635, he, with his young wife, his 8 weeks old son, and a few friends embarked April 18, 1635 in the "Susan & Ellyn", Captain Edward Payne, Master. It required 10 weeks for this tiny craft of 200 tons to reach New England. The passenger list of this ship shows nos. 20, 21, and 22 to be

Simon Crosby, Husbandman, 26
Ann Crosby, Uxor, 25
(Thomas Crosby, child, 8 weeks) 1 child

A qualifying statement from this same list states that they were not of the group who refused to pay assessments and were not leaving England just to escape the tax.

On arrival in Boston, they secured houses already built by a company under Thomas Hooker at Cambridge, Mass. Simon Crosby bought of William Spencer a homestead in Cambridge at the corner of present day Brattle Street at Brattle Square, where the Brattle House stood.

Simon Crosby was admitted a freeman March 03, 1636. This freeman's oath had to be taken before any male emigrant could become a member of the Church or the body politic.

He was soon elected to a public office, but died at age 30, leaving a net estate of 454 pounds, 4 shillings, 4 pence. He was possibly buried in the old cemetery opposite Cambridge Commons.

1st son, Thomas, became a minister at Eastham, Mass.
2nd son, Simon, settled in Billerica, Mass.
3rd son, Joseph, remained in Braintree, Mass.

Thomas was a graduate of Harvard College---through the influence of his step-father, Rev. Richard Tompson. He later became a merchant at Harwich, Mass. While on a business trip to Boston was found dead in bed there, June 13, 1702, age 67. He is the ancestor of the Cape Cod Crosby's. He married in 1662, a Sarah . Their 13 children were all born inEastham including one pair of twins and triplets.

Location of the Home of the English Crosby's

Holme-on-the-Spaulding Moor in York County, England is an extensive parish, located about 15 miles southeast of the city of York, and lies in the midst of a great flat plain of clay soil, which is bounded on the east by a range of hills called Wolds. The parish is somewhat circular, with a diameter of about five miles. About 20 miles to the southeast is the seaport of Hull. In the northern part of the parish, a small, oval-shaped hill rises about 150' feet above the level of the plain. On the summit stands the ancient parish church; from the top of which a fine view can be had for many miles, the lofty spires of York Minster, nearly 15 miles to the northwest being easily seen. In past centuries, a regular system of beacons was established around the coast regions of England, the firing of which was the signal for the mustering of militia to repell a foreign invasion. These beacons were located in the top tops of hills and the favorable situation of the hill in Holme-on-the-Spaulding Moor caused its use for that purpose from time immemorial. On two occasions in 1588, when the Spanish Armada threatened England and in 1805, when Napoleon was preparing to invade the country, these beacons were made ready.

Presumably taken from a book SIMON THE EMIGRANT by Eleanor Davis.

Child of S
IMON CROSBY and ANN BRIGHMAN is:
7. i.   SIMON7 CROSBY, b. August 1637, Cambridge, Mass..
