He married Elizabeth ca. 1817 probably in Spartanburg District, S.C

In the 1820 Spartanburg District is also a Joseph HURT and a Joel HURT, believed to be his brother and father.

In the 1830 Spartanburg District, SC census is also Isham(living next door to Moses FOSTER), James, Joel - probably his father, John(James and John were living next door to each other), and Joseph - probably his brother. Thomas HURT was living two doors down from Zachariah WINGO.

January 23,1837 Spartanburg District, SC Box 14, package # 51 - Will for Joseph HURT was bonded by Riley J. HURT and Joshua TAPP. Appraisers were John WILLS, Joel HURT, William FORTE, Thomas HURT, and Isham HURT.

In the 1840 Spartanburg District, SC census is also Joel - probably his father, John C.- son of Thomas and Elizabeth, Riley J.- son of Joseph, James H.- son of Joseph, James V., and Isham HURT

In 1850, Thomas HURT is found in Carroll Co., GA. Living next to him is son, John C. HURT. Son, William K. HURT is living in Cass County, GA the next county to the east. Both John and William show that they had children born in AL about 1845/1846, but returned to GA.
