David A Swain's Genealogical Home Page

Updated August 28, 2004

My genealogical research covers both maternal and paternal ancestral lines going back up to thirteen generations. As a family sociologist I am interested in researching both the genealogical "tree" and a variety of data about its members such as their occupations, geographical and social mobility, religious affiliations, health and morbidity.

My direct ancestral surnames going back six generations include: SWAIN, HUGGINS, CADMAN, HENRY, OPENSHAW, PAGE, LINES, CLARK, JONES, LINES, HANSON, NEILSEN, MATTINSON, MATHESON, MAKIN, ANDERSON, PETERS, PAGE, ROBERTS, HANSON, FOUNTAIN, BROWN, WALKER, KERR, REDFORD and of course UNKNOWN.

The MAKIN (with earlier variants) and FOUNTAIN lines have been traced back the furthest, to around the early 17th century (both thirteen generations). I acknowledge that genealogies such as this are social constructs and do not necessarily represent genetic ancestry; as social constructs the earlier lines are reasonably well established within the limitations of the available records and allowing for some reasonable inferences being made!

My wife Valerie Margaret Swain nee MIDDLEMISS has also researched and published her family tree. Her book, The Halls of Huirangi, includes a good deal of material on her ancestors' migration from the United Kingdom to New Zealand and pioneer experience in New Zealand.

The surnames in the most recent six generations of her study are: MIDDLEMISS, GIBONEY, GUNNION, HALL, GOODWIN, FULTON, JOHNSTON, and BLAIR.

About myself: I am an academic staff member in the Department of Societies and Cultures of the University of Waikato / Te Whare Waananga o Waikato, Private Bag 3105, Hamilton 2020, New Zealand. I was born in England, married Maggie MIDDLEMISS (a New Zealander) there, and emigrated to New Zealand with her in 1968. I am now a New Zealand citizen.

I am presently working on three articles reporting my genealogical research: (a) on my medical missionary paternal grandparents Dr Arthur SWAIN and Mrs Dorothy May Swain nee CADMAN who worked in China 1925-35 under contract to the Salvation Army and provided medical supplies to the New Zealand nurse Kathleen Hall who worked in areas controlled by Mao Zedong's forces; (b) on my Lancashire cotton industry ancestors (workers) who lived in the places and worked in the factories described by Frederick Engels in "The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1842", the raw material for Karl Marx's publications and some of whom achieved considerable upwards social mobility in the C19; and (c) my Wainfleet (Lincolnshire) HUGGINS and related surnames homeopathic apothecary / chemist / pharmacist business dynasty who worked for social and environmental reforms despite conservative resistance.

I am also working on a book with the working title "Genealogy and Family History On Computers and Online for New Zealanders" (it will no doubt have a snappier title when it's published)!
