After my retirement in 1999, I began to research the history of the Swain Family beginning at the point where my late sister Margaret Louise (Swain) Bugaren, after a long illness, was unable to go further than 3 generations.
I had been told that five Swain brothers had come over from England in the 1700's, however in my research I found that not to be the case, and was able to trace the ancestors to a much earlier date.
I would like to acknowledge and thank the following people and organizations for their contributions to the compilation of the family record.
First I would like to acknowledge my late sister Margaret Louise (Swain) Bugaren for the information she left. She had compiled a family tree and photo album for our grandfather, John Garland Swain, before his death in 1965.
My brother, Alan Brian Swain, for his work on the Leuenberger and Swain families.
My first cousins, Judith Ann (Martin) Stevenson and Nancy Lynn (Martin) Bjordahl, for the Leuenberger/Martin families.
Aimee Claire (Bugaren) Manzo and James Edward (Jeb) Bugaren for Bugaren family information and loaning me their mother's family tree and photo album.
My first cousin, John Soren Swain, for the Frank Garland Swain/Mortensen families' information.
Bernard James Drouillard, the grandson of my great aunt Mary Elizabeth Swain, found the document written by William N.F. Swain, with his grandmother's personal effects after she died. He was kind enough to send me a copy of that document.
Shera Thompson, granddaughter of Leslie C. Nanney, business partner of John Garland Swain, for information and photographs of the Swain/Nanney families.
The Jefferson County Genealogical Society, Jefferson County, Kansas, provided documents and photographs of Loring Reuben Swain and Lucy Ann Rice.
Ms. Kathie J. Ward, Genealogical Librarian, New Castle-Henry County Public Library, New Castle, Indiana, for a tremendous amount of data on William Henry Swain and Elizabeth M. Pickering.
Bonnie Manche, Knightstown, Henry County, Indiana, for documents and photographs on William H. Swain, Elizabeth M. Pickering, and William's twin brother, George H. Swain
If you have information such as additions or corrections to any section of this report, please contact me. Anything provided will be greatly appreciated.
Respectfully, Loring John Swain, Jr.
