80 YEARS AGO

The snowmobile owned by th Soo Hardware company made the trip between the Sault and Pickford on Sunday morning, February 8, 1925 in just 1 hour 10 minutes said Wallace Lundy, manager of the Sooford company. It was the first trip of the snowmobile into the country and was in the nature of a test. Joe Sweeney and leo Vaughan made the trip. They left the Sault at 8:50 a.m. and arrived in Pickford at 10 a.m. they said. The snowmobile consisted of a Ford roadster and an extra pair of wheels with a belt. The wheels had been reomved in front and runners substituted.

MRS. MCSWEENEY

Mary Ann McSweeney of 1006 John St. died at 8:30 pm Saturday at Provincial House. Mrs. McSweeney was born in Chippewa County on July 10, 1892, and had lived here all her life. She was a member of the Senior Citizens Club, and of St. Joseph's Church and the altar society. Her husband Joseph died in 1949. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Charles G. (Lauretta) Andrews and Mrs. Carl (Betty) Doran, both of the Sault, and Mrs. Ellen Wosniewski of Pontiac. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Friends may call today from 2 until 5t pm and 7 to 10 pm with prayers at 8 pm at Bailey-Newhouse Funeral Home. Services will be held at St. Joseph's Church Tuesday at 9 am with Msgr. Oliver O'Callaghan officiating and burial will be in Donaldson Catholic Cemetery.

Former area resident Jack Warren Sweeney 313 Venice East Blvd, Venice Florida died July 4.
He was born in Stirlingville and moved to Venice from Detroit 9 years ago. A boxing trainer for 14 years, he boxed professionally under the name "Kid Sweeney" He was a machine operator for the Ford Motor Company for 43 years and a member of Unity on the Gulf Church in Venice , the Lincoln Lodge 504F and A.M. of Detroit and Port Charlotte Pinochle Club. Surviving are his wife Violet G; a daughter Frances M Hubik of Wilmington, Del; and three grandchildren. Three brothers and two sisters predeceased him. Memorials may be made to the Unity on the Gulf Church of Venice. Florida.
