Auto falls on child. Ethel Sweeney, nine year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Sweeney of Stirlingville, near Pickford, was fatally injured at noon today when a car driven by her mother turned over and crushed her. Mrs. Sweeney and Ethel were driving in the family car along a country road a mile south of Stirlingville, according to Sheriff J. Willard Welsh, who investigated Mrs. Sweeney turned her head momentarily to glance at some men working in the field and at that instant the car went into a ditch. In attempting to bring the car out of the ditch, Mrs. Sweeney "cramped" the front wheels so that they dug deeply into the earth and the car lunged sharply across the road and into the ditch on the other side, turning over at the same time. Apparently the door had opened and the child was flung out, the car falling on her and crushing her. Men working in the field, Harvy and Howard Pennington, tried to raise the car but were not able to. They brought up a tractor and with a chain succeeded in extricating the girl, who spoke only a word or so before she died. Dr. Cummings of Pickford was called and the body was removed to the Quinnel undertaking home at Pickford. |
