Kidney Transplant Successful

When they wheeled him into surgery for a kidney transplant, Donald R. McSweeney, weighed only 112 pounds. that was last July 12 at University Hospital, Ann Arbor. Today the six-foot, two-inch McSweeney, of 4152 Detroit, Dearborn Heights, weighs 174 pounds. Since January 10, he has been back in uniform as a plant security guard, making the rounds at the Riopelle Parts Department of Cadillac Motor Division. The 37-year-old victim of kidney disease received the life-saving gift of a kidney from his mother, 54-year-old Lucille (Mrs. Fred) White of Gaylord.

It was six years ago that McSweeney experienced the first symptoms of his illness - glomerulonephritis! The disease gradually destroys the kidneys' ability to function. At First, McSweeney began having recurrent kidney trouble. It cleared up, but never completely. His pretty wife Joyce, recalls that he was always tired, listless and sick. In December, 1964, his condition worsened and he was hospitalized in Trenton in March, 1965. As he grew steadily weaker, doctors offered no hope. McSweeney was transferred to University Hospital in April, 1965. I said maybe there isn't anything the doctors at University Hospital can do for him, recalls Mrs. McSweeney, "but at least he deserves the chance." .....................

He enjoyed going to his Uncle Richard's house as a young boy.

As a younger man he was out shining deer one night with his brother in laws. It was a foggy night and they spotted some eyes. He dropped one, then another, then realized that he was not shooting at deer, but rather cows. He killed two cows. He made contact with the farmer to make restitution for his mistake. He had to pay for the beef. It is unclear whether he received any of the meat or not.

EDNA SWEENEY
Edna B. Sweeney, 84, of Charlotte Beach, Barbeau, Michigan passed away at 8:15 p.m. January 28, 2002 at Tendercare in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She was born in Pickford, Michigan on August 29, 1917 and lived in the Pickford area for many years before moving to Barbeau.
Edna was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and was employed for a time at Kincheloe Air Force Base. She enjoyed her family, dancing, playing cards and traveling.
She is survived by three daughters, Connie (Dale) McConkey and Patricia (Tom) Lamb of Pickford, and Sharon (Bill) Ryan of Taylor, Michigan; two sons, Michael (Marilyn) Sweeney of Cedarville, Michigan and John Sweeney of Barbeau; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Loreen Harrison of Bark River and Bea Harrison of Pickford; and brothers-in-law, Aaron Sweeney of Kincheloe, and Rudy Sherlund of Cedarville.
On June 4, 1936, Edna was married to Richard Sweeney in Barbeau. Richard preceded her in death on January 31, 1997. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Wilford and Myrtle Harrison; one son, James; four infant sons; her brothers, Everett and McGowan "Mac" Harrison; and her sister, Opal Sherlund.
At Edna's request, no visitation will be held. A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, January 31 at 10 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Barbeau with Fr. John Hascall celebrant. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until time of services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Holy Family Building Fund.
The Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford, Michigan is handling arrangements.

James Lee Sweeney of Traverse City, former Sault Ste. Marie resident died Tuesday May 30, 1989 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
He was born March 23, 1954 in Sault Ste. Marie and was a medical assistant. He was a member of the Holy Family Church in Barbeau.
He is survived by his parents Richard and Edna Sweeney of Barbeau; two brothers Michael and Jack and three sisters Connie McConkey, Sharon Ryan and Patricia Lamb.
Memorial services were held today (Thursday) at Holy Family Church in Barbeau with Rev. Thomas Bain officiating. Arrangements were handled by Covell Funeral Home of Traverse City.
