      5. Mary Ann Leavitt, born July 30, 1819 in Lancaster, NH; died March 26, 1907 in Oxford, Oxford, ME21,22. She was the daughter of 10. John Leavitt and 11. Abigail Pevely.

When Moses was six, his family moved to Peru, ME and later to Oxford
when he was ten. In 1835, he was apprenticed to make wagons and
carriages in the Auburn/Lewiston area. Moses and his new bride, Mary,
lived with her parents until moving back to Norway. Between 1843 and
1844, Moses M. and Mary A. Hanscom sold four pieces of land in the
town of Norway for prices ranging from $20 to $125 (Oxford Co Deeds v.
67 p. 471, v. 68 p. 176, v. 71 p. 295-296). They moved in the mid
1840's to Welchville (Oxford), ME. On 20 June 1851 Moses M. Hanscome,
wheelwright, purchased a house lot in Welchville, Oxford, ME for
$109.22 (Oxford Co Deeds v. 90, p. 535). On 29 Oct 1851, Moses M.
Hanscome, wheelwright of the Town of Oxford, sold land to Freeman
Leavitt of N. Reading, MA (Oxford Deeds v. 91, p. 317). On 29 Jan,
1852, Moses M. Hanscome, wheelwright of S. Reading, MA, granted a
mortgage on his property located in Welchville (lot #6, third division
of house lots as delineated in the David Noyes plan) to his partners
Edward and Benjamin Mansfield of E. Mansfield & Co of Massachusetts
(Oxford Deeds v. 91, p. 469). On 27 March 1856, Moses M. Hanscome and
his wife Mary A. Hanscome, his wife, sold land in the Town of Oxford
(Oxford Deeds v. 109, p. 154). In 1868, they moved to Wakefield, MA,
where he worked in a carpet-weaving factory and ran a boarding house.
He and his family returned to Oxford in 1877. An 1880 Atlas shows
Moses M. Hanscom's house on Lake St. in Oxford Village at the end of
Thompson Lake.

Notes for Nathaniel Cole Mayo:
Nathaniel served as a private in the Civil War in the Massachusetts
4th Regiment Volunteer Heavy Artillery - Co K. He enlisted on
8/20/1864 at South Reading and mustered out on 6/17/1865. He appeared
on the MA state census of 1865 in South Reading and on the 1870
Federal Census in Wakefield. His occupation was a stone mason. The
value of his real estate on the Federal Census was $7,500 and his
personal property was valued at $1,500. (Assuming 3% inflation,
$9,000 in 1870 would be the equivalent of $420,000 today).
He went to San Francisco around 1876. His wife, Mary A.W. Mayo,
"waited for him to get work out there and mostly waited until Uncle
Will and Aunt Alice Hanscom had their first baby, Willa, in March
1879."
