Johannes Weydenhamer

The progenitor of the Weidenhammer families in the United States was Johannes Weydenhamer. Born in the province of Boden in Germany on November 14, 1726, he emigrated to this country during the reign of Frederick Wilhelm the second.

Johannes sailed from Rotterdam in his twenty-second year upon the ship "Edinburgh" and took the oath of allegiance after arriving at the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 5, 1748.

Johannes Weydenhammer later became known as John Weidenhammer, and settled in Berks County, Pennsylvania. In 1750, he married Margaret Madgalene Eblinger of the same locality, who was born in Kurpflaz, Germany in 1729 and who emigated to the United States with her parents in 1741.

Johannes was a soldier during the American Revolutionary War and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on May 17, 1777 in the 2nd Battalion, 7th Company from Maiden Creek Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, which was organized on May 5 and 6, 1777. The officers were as follows: (reference: Pennsylvania Archives 5th Series - Volume 5, pages 177-179)

Colonel - Daniel Undree
Lieutenant Colonel - Jacob Boyer
Major - John Huy
Captain - Abraham Huy
First Lieutenant - Christian Bearingstein
Second Lieutenant - John Weidenhammer

Johannes died on August 3, 1804. His widow Margaret died on April 22, 1812. Both were members and are buried in Moselem-Lutheran Church Cemetery, Richmond Township. Their tombstones still stand, inscribed in their native German script.

From family bible records to obituaries, I've gathered together all of the information I could, and now I'm hoping someone else will be able to fill in the blanks!
