Notes for H
OSEA MASHBORN:
Foreward: Local oral history of the Nine Mile community states that Hosea Mashborn was the father of all Mary Ann Davis' children. They supposedly lived together for many years and had at least six children before marrying. They finally married to ensure the children could inherit the Marshburn lands equally. Due to the uncertainty of this, only the children for which documentary evidence has been found listing Hosea as their father have been listed under his marriage to Mary Ann Davis. Her other children, for which no documentation has been found, are listed with Mary Ann Davis and "Unknown".
Hosea is first found in Onslow County when a bond was issued for the marriage of Hosea Mashborne to Sarah Gurganus on Dec 20, 1843. William Pearce, bondsman. (Onslow County, NC Marriage Bonds, p. 62, on file in the Onslow County Register of Deeds office, Jacksonville, NC) I suspect she was a daughter of Nicholas and Ruthy Gurganus and sister to Owen Gurganus, thus explaining the close tie between these two men.
In the 1850 Federal Census of North Carolina, Onslow County, Hosea appears without a family, living with Henry Mashborn, Jr. (his brother):

1850 NC Census, Onslow County, Lower Richlands District, page 147 (stamped number on page), Dwelling 847, family 847:

Henry Mashborn, Jr., 32, Male, Farmer, Over 20 cannot read and write
Hosea Mashborn, 30, Male, Farmer, land valued at $50, Over 20 cannot read and write.

Sarah has apparently died before Dec 5, 1855. On this date, Hosea is granted guardianship of three children, as shown in Zae Hargett Gwynn's book, "Records of Onslow County, North Carolina, Vol. II (1961), p. 1430:

"Dec 5, 1855. Hosea Mashborn appointed guardian to Brancy, Hester, Hosea N. Mashburn, his own with bond of $400.00 secured by Owen Gurganus and Howell Horn."

The location of the children and Sarah in 1850 has yet to be determined; however, the children, and his father, appear with him in the 1860 NC Census, Onslow County, Lower Richlands District, p. 235, dwelling476, family 476:

Hosea Mashborn, 41, M, Farmer, real estate: $200, pers. property: $415, born NC, over 20 cannot read or write.
Brancy Mashborn, 17, F, Domestic, attended school within year
Hestis (Hester) Mashborn, 14, F, attended school within year
Hosea N. Mashborn, 12, M, attended school within year
Henry Mashborn, 70, Cooper, born NC

In the 1870 NC Census, Onslow County, Hoza (Hosea) Mashborne is found at age 50, a farmer. Brancy, age 25, is still living with him or has moved out and returned.

Note: A marriage bond for James M. Pearce and Brancy Mashborne was issued on May 20, 1863. Bondsman, Jesse A. Walton. (Onslow Co., NC Marriage Bonds, p. 73, on file in Onslow County Register of Deeds office, Jacksonville, NC)

Hosea Mashborn married Mary Ann Davis, at her house in Onslow County, on May 20 1871. In the 1880 NC Census, Onslow County, they appear with Hosea as the head of the household. It's interesting to note all the children are listed as his sons and daughters...with their last name listed as Marshburn. Documentation has been found that lists Hosea as the father of some of the children; however, many of the people providing the information may have grown up being "told" Hosea was the father of all the children. Concrete proof has yet to be found.

1880 NC Census, Onslow County

Marshburn, Hosa, 60, male, white, Farmer
" Mary, 47, Female, white, wife
" Thomas, 24, Male, white, son
" Catherine V., 22, Female, white, dau
" Elizabeth, 18, Female, white, dau
" Lee S., 16, Male, white, son
" Henry D., 11, Male, white, son
" Mary A., 8, Female, white, dau
" Jerra A., 6, Male, white, son
" Cagy E., 2, Male, white, son

Caroline, age about 27, is no longer in the household, having apparently moved out on her own. Also, Rebecca, age abt. 22, is no longer in the household. She's probably married Benjamin Lewis Screws by this time.
Research is currently being conducted to ascertain whether Hosea was in fact a member of the 21st North Carolina Militia (later transferring to the 8th Bn, Partisan Rangers) during the Civil War. The presence of a CSA marker on Owen Gurganus' grave listing his service in this unit, the close ties between the two, and a listing for a Hosea (unproven if it's this Hosea) Mashborn in this unit suggests it's possible. Owen was a 2nd Lieutenant. The Hosea Mashborn in the listing is a 1st Lieutenant. Information is beginning to suggest these men to have been quite respected and prominent within the Nine Mile community.
It's unknown when and where Hosea Mashborn died. One interesting story relates that a Mashborn, believed to be him, was found "floating in the river". The search continues to discover more concerning Hosea, his life and his times.

Marriage Notes for H
OSEA MASHBORN and SARAH GURGANUS:
Hosea Mashborne to Sarah Gurganus, Bond: 20 Dec, 1843. William Pearce, bondsman; Jasper Etheridge, witness

Notes for M
ARY ANN DAVIS:
Mary Ann Davis had her first child, Caroline, at about age 22. Throughout the years 1850 to 1870, Mary is shown as the head of her own household. In each Census, new children have been born. On most documents found, there is no indication of the identity of the father of Mary's first seven children.
Oral family history of Nine Mile indicates that Hosea is believed to be the father of all the children, but this is by no means certain. However, in the 1880 Census, he claims all the children in the household as his.
Mary is shown living with her mother, Rebecca, in the 1850 Census, but had established her own household by the time of the 1860 Census. She's living next to her sisters Dovey and Susan, and her mother, Rebecca. Mary's neighbors on the other side are William Screws and James Swinson.

1860 NC Census, Onslow County, dwelling 364, family 364:

Davis, Mary, 28, Female, mulatto, Serving
" , Caroline, 7, Female, mulatto
" , G.T., 5, Male, mulatto
" , Vancy C., 2, Female, mulatto
" , Rebecca C., 1, Female, mulatto
" , Mary S., 4, Female, mulatto
Mashborn, Jane, 26, Female, white, Domestic
Chance, Wright, 40, Male, mulatto, Farm Laborer

Note: This Census raises some questions concerning Mary S. Davis. Mary would have been born abt. 1856, but no additional information has been found on her to date. Possibly a daughter who died young?

In 1870 Mary was still living near her mother, Rebecca, and her sisters Dovey and Susan. The 1870 NC Census, Onslow County, dwelling 297, family 297 shows her with the following household:

Davis Mary, 35, white, Keeping house
" Caroline, 17, Female, mulatto, Farm Laborer
" Thomas, 15, Male, mulatto, Farm Laborer
" Vany, 13, Female, mulatto, Farm Laborer
